Taideniitty Spring 2027 Deadline: 31 Aug 2026 Country: Finland Taideniitty Artist Residency offers a peaceful, self-funded residency for professional artists seeking dedicated time and space for creative work. Located in the historic industrial town of Varkaus in the Finnish Lakeland, the residency provides an inspiring environment where nature, cultural heritage, and contemporary artistic practice meet. The residency welcomes artists from all disciplines, including visual arts, photography, printmaking, writing, music, performance, and interdisciplinary practices. There is no fixed theme, allowing artists to pursue their own research, experimentation, or ongoing projects. Residents are encouraged—but not required—to engage with the local community through artist talks, workshops, open studios, or other forms of knowledge sharing. These activities are arranged in collaboration with the residency team and according to each artist’s interests. The residency emphasizes artistic freedom, cultural exchange, and meaningful connections between international artists and the local community. It is particularly suitable for artists looking for a calm, supportive environment away from the distractions of larger cities. Duration of residency 1 to 3 months Accommodation Artists stay in fully furnished private apartments located in the historic Taideniitty building. Each apartment includes a bedroom, living area, private bathroom, and a fully equipped kitchen, providing a comfortable and independent living environment throughout the residency. The residency offers four one-bedroom apartments (approximately 50 m² each) and one larger family apartment (75 m²), suitable for artists travelling with a partner or children. Residents have access to shared facilities, including a printmaking studio, a communal workspace, laundry facilities, a garden, and a traditional Finnish sauna. Bed linen, towels, Wi-Fi, and basic kitchen equipment are provided. The apartments are located in the same building as the studios, allowing artists to move easily between living and working spaces in a quiet and supportive environment. Disciplines, work equipment and assistance The residency primarily welcomes visual artists, with a particular focus on printmakers. Applications from artists working in painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, mixed media, installation, and other visual arts are also encouraged. Residents have access to a shared printmaking studio equipped with an etching press suitable for intaglio and relief printmaking. Basic studio furniture, work tables, and easels are available. Artists should bring their own specialised tools, materials, and consumables. The residency team provides practical support with orientation, local information, and assistance in settling into the residency. We are also happy to help artists connect with local cultural organisations, galleries, and community partners when appropriate.Studio / Workspace Residents have access to a shared studio space located in the same building as the accommodation. The studio provides a quiet and supportive environment for focused artistic work and is shared with other resident artists. A dedicated printmaking studio is available for artists working in intaglio and relief printmaking, featuring an etching press and basic printmaking equipment. The studio also includes work tables, easels, and space for drawing, painting, and other visual arts practices. The shared workspace encourages informal exchange and dialogue between artists while allowing plenty of room for independent work. Artists may use the studio throughout their residency and are expected to maintain a respectful, clean, and collaborative working environment.Fees and support The residency is self-funded. Residency fees (per month): Single artist: €650 Additional adult (e.g. partner): +€300 Family apartment: €990 (maximum 2 adults and 2 children) The residency fee includes fully furnished accommodation, Wi-Fi, utilities (electricity, heating and water), access to the shared studio and printmaking facilities, use of the Finnish sauna, laundry facilities, bed linen and towels, and basic orientation and support from the residency team. Artists are responsible for their own travel expenses, food, art materials, and personal insurance. Expectations towards the artist Artists are encouraged—but not required—to engage with the local community during their residency. This may include an artist talk, an open studio, a workshop, or another form of public presentation, depending on the artist’s practice and interests. Participation in public or community activities is arranged in consultation with the residency team and is always tailored to the artist’s experience, schedule, and project. We value meaningful cultural exchange over formal obligations. Artists are expected to respect the shared living and working spaces, contribute to a positive residency community, and leave the accommodation and studio in good condition at the end of their stay. A project proposal describing what you plan to work on during the residency (maximum 2 pages). Your CV and portfolio, either as PDF attachments (combined maximum size 10 MB) or as links to your website and/or online portfolio. Applications are reviewed by the Taideniitty Selection Committee based on artistic quality, the proposed project, and the suitability of the residency for the applicant’s practice. All applicants will be informed of the selection results by 15 September 2026. Selected artists are required to confirm their residency by paying a €200 reservation fee within two weeks of receiving the acceptance notification. The reservation fee will be deducted from the total residency fee. The remaining residency fee must be paid no later than three months before the beginning of the residency period.
