A residency for artists working across sound, moving image, performance, installation and interdisciplinary practices. Hosted by Canteiro, an independent artist-run space in São Paulo, Brazil, How to Live Together? is an international residency built around one of the few artist-run multimedia studios in Latin America specifically designed for experimental artistic practices. At the heart of the residency is a 70 m² acoustically treated studio, originally conceived as a professional recording studio. Today it serves as a flexible environment for artistic research and production, particularly suited for sound art, moving image, video art, performance, installation and emerging media. Rather than offering only accommodation and studio space, Canteiro provides artists with access to an environment where research, experimentation and interdisciplinary practices are central to everyday life. Located in São Paulo—one of the world’s largest and most dynamic cultural centers—the residency connects artists to an active ecosystem of exhibitions, independent spaces, curators, researchers and international collaborations. The conceptual framework of the residency begins with a simple question: How do we live together? Artists are invited to investigate this question through their own methodologies, engaging with themes such as coexistence, care, urban life, labor, ecology, technology, migration, collective imagination and new social structures. Duration of residency Residencies are available for 1, 2 or 3 months, with longer stays encouraged for research-based and interdisciplinary projects. Accommodation Residents stay in a private room within Canteiro’s residency facilities in Vila Madalena, São Paulo. Accommodation includes: Private bedroom Individual workspace Air conditioning and heating Bed linen and towels Shared fully equipped kitchen High-speed internet Located in one of São Paulo’s most vibrant cultural neighborhoods, the residency is within walking distance of galleries, cultural institutions, restaurants, cafés, supermarkets and art supply stores, providing easy access to the city’s contemporary art scene. Disciplines, work equipment and assistance The residency welcomes artists working across contemporary artistic practices, with a particular focus on sound art, moving image, video art, performance, installation, new media, experimental and emerging media, and interdisciplinary practices. While the program is especially suited to these fields, applications from artists working across all areas of contemporary art are welcome. Every residency at Canteiro is tailored to the artist's research, medium and professional goals. Rather than offering a fixed package, we work closely with each resident to design an experience that responds to their artistic practice and production needs. Depending on the artist's project and the residency package selected, residents may have access to private accommodation in São Paulo, an individual studio with internet access, and scheduled access (up to six hours per week) to Canteiro's 70 m² acoustically treated multimedia studio. Originally designed as a professional recording studio, this unique space offers exceptional acoustic qualities and provides an ideal environment for sound art, audio recording, moving image, video art, performance, installation and interdisciplinary experimentation. Additional opportunities may include critical review sessions with invited curators, professors, gallery professionals and established artists from the Brazilian contemporary art scene, artist talks, studio visits, guided visits to independent art spaces and galleries throughout São Paulo, and promotion through Canteiro's website and social media channels. Residents may also choose to conclude their stay with an optional Open Studio presentation. Artists wishing to develop a public exhibition during or after the residency may commission Canteiro's curatorial and production services. These customized exhibition packages can be tailored to the specific needs of each project and may include curatorial support, exhibition space, production assistance, installation and deinstallation, graphic design, communication, mediation, photography and video documentation. This flexible structure allows each residency to be developed according to the artist's interests, whether focused on research, production, public engagement or exhibition.Studio / Workspace Studio / Workspace At the core of the residency is Canteiro's 70 m² acoustically treated multimedia studio, originally designed as a professional recording studio. Its exceptional sound quality and flexible architecture make it a unique environment for artistic experimentation. Unlike conventional artist studios, the space was conceived for time-based and interdisciplinary practices. It supports projects involving: Sound art Audio recording and composition Moving image and video art Performance Installation Expanded cinema Screenings and listening sessions Workshops and rehearsals Experimental and emerging media The studio functions as both a production space and a place for research, dialogue and collective experimentation, encouraging the resisdent to work across disciplines and develop projects that would be difficult to realize in conventional studio settings.Fees and support Every residency at Canteiro is tailored to the artist’s research, medium and professional goals. Rather than offering a fixed package, we work closely with each resident to design an experience that responds to their artistic practice and production needs. The residency fee is US$1,350 for one month, US$2,500 for two months, and US$3,600 for three months. Fees are billed in Brazilian Reais (BRL); USD values are provided for reference only. The standard residency includes private accommodation, an individual studio space, participation in the residency program, and access to Canteiro’s artistic community and professional network. Depending on the artist’s project and the residency package selected, additional opportunities and services may be incorporated into the program. These may include scheduled access (up to six hours per week) to Canteiro’s 70 m² acoustically treated multimedia studio—originally designed as a professional recording studio—critical review sessions with invited curators, professors, gallery professionals and established artists, artist talks, studio visits, guided visits to independent art spaces and galleries throughout São Paulo, promotion through Canteiro’s website and social media channels, and an optional Open Studio at the conclusion of the residency. Artists who wish to develop a public exhibition may also commission Canteiro’s curatorial and production services. These can be tailored to the specific needs of each project and may include curatorial support, exhibition space, production assistance, installation and deinstallation, graphic design, mediation, photography, video documentation and communication. Residents are responsible for travel, meals, visas, health insurance and personal expenses. Limited partial scholarships may occasionally become available through partnerships or external funding opportunities. Expectations towards the artist The residency prioritizes research, experimentation and artistic exchange. Residents are encouraged to engage with Canteiro’s artistic community throughout their stay. At the end of the residency, artists are invited to present their research through an Open Studio, artist talk, screening, performance or another format appropriate to their practice. This public sharing is encouraged but remains flexible and is developed in dialogue with the Canteiro team. The Open Studio may take place as part of Vem na Sexta, a visiting circuit connecting independent art spaces in the Pinheiros and Vila Madalena neighborhoods.
