Open Call 2027 – Sardinia Island, Italy Deadline: 07 Sep 2026 Country: Italy Nocefresca is the first active and permanent artistic residency program in Sardinia. It is a house that welcomes artists and creative professionals from all over the world to the rural villages of Sardinia for research and creative experimentation, involving both participants and local communities in a cultural exchange experience. By inviting a limited number of artists in areas far from the tourist coasts, Nocefresca creates a sustainable experience able to contribute to the territory and support it in the periods when it experiences less tourist flow and it is therefore the most authentic and beautiful. The residency is primarily self-directed and, as an artist, you are expected to be self-sufficient in your practice. However, Nocefresca organises some activities to help you fuel your artistic process: – Presentation of each one’s practice to the group – Individual and group meetings with the guest curator for assistance and feedback – Opportunity to propose site-specific projects, talks and workshops – Final open-studio event, open to the public – Every month, a local person of our choosing takes the artists to his/her favourite places in the village of Milis and outside of it (transportation included) – Other outdoor excursions and explorations, screening of films, visiting artists and social activities with the local community are extra activities that can happen spontaneously during the residency and can be facilitated by our team. Duration of residency From 1 to 3 months. There is also the possibility to do shorter stays of 2 weeks, but they come without curatorial assistance and private studio. Accommodation Through Nocefresca, the artists have the chance to become authentic temporary inhabitants of Sardinian rural villages thanks to our network of locals supporting the project. By providing their vacant dwellings during periods of less tourist flow or closure, they give us enormous help in organizing extended stays for the artists. Artists live in shared apartments and they can choose to have a private bathroom or shared. There is also the possibility to have a complete private accomodation in a cottage in the countryside. The houses are equipped with full amenities: kitchen, hot water, WiFi, washer. Bed sheets and towels are provided, as are basic kitchen necessities and appliances. The hosts do a general cleaning at the beginning and at the end of your stay. Each artist is responsible for the recycling. Free parking available on the street. Disciplines, work equipment and assistance Nocefresca is great for visual artists, photographers, writers, multi-disciplinary artists, designers, composers and creative nomads. We schedule curatorial assistance throughout the entire residency, but we are also always happy to visit your studio, exchange ideas or give some practical help. We can also help you organise a specific meeting with the community, facilitate interactions, put you in contact with local artists or recommend a less-known location. We have a series of basic equipment and some classic hardware; you are expected to provide any specific tools and materials you might need.Studio / Workspace Our studios are located in three different premises. Casa Bagnolo, Casa Oaxaca, and the Orchard Studio. Casa Bagnolo is the main hub of the residency. From here, it is possible to easily reach the countryside and experience a Mediterranean lifestyle made of peaceful days, natural-food diets and the company of warm communities. Here is also where Antonella, one of our main partners, runs the additional meal service. Inside Casa Bagnolo there are four studios, each equipped with a desk, rolling chair, armchair, storage space, and good lighting, and an open communal space with a library, a refreshment point for a cup of coffee, two desks for reading or writing, a corner with sofa and armchairs great for casual chats, movie screenings or just relaxing. Outdoors, Casa Bagnolo offers a cozy courtyard with tables in the shade perfect for working or eating and armchairs under the palms to soak in the Sardinian sun. There is also a shed with some tools functioning as a small workshop that can be accessed upon request. Casa Oaxaca is an old house refurbished by our hosts Italo and Leo, equipped with two bedrooms, two studios equipped with a desk, rolling chair, armchair, storage space, and good lighting, and an 80 sq m outdoor workspace in the internal courtyard: a small oasis of peace ideal for those who want to work outdoors, designed by our hosts: the local garden designers Italo and Leo. The Orchard Cottage is a countryside cottage located a 20-minute walk, a 10-minute bike ride, or a 5-minute drive from Milis. It is a fully private space that functions both as a studio and accommodation.Fees and support The participation fee depends on the kind of studio and the housing type chosen by the artist. The fees vary from 1,650 to 1,880 euros per month. Expectations towards the artist At Nocefresca, artists are free to develop their own projects without any restriction regarding topic or outcome. As a curatorial choice, every year we pick a theme upon which we establish our plan of activities. On one hand, this helps us share with the artists and the public a coherent one-year-long experience; on the other, it allows us to create an inspiring and harmonious program of activities. The topics focus always on the relationship among humans, nature and future and intertwine both local and universal interests, such as botany, agriculture, food, landscape, community, sustainability, history, anthropology, culture and more.
