Byrdcliffe Off-Season Cottage Residency (Fall/ Winter) Deadline: 16 Aug 2026 Country: United States The Byrdcliffe Off-Season Cottage Residency is tailored for artists and creative thinkers interested in a quiet retreat for deep focus. Experience the magic of the mountain during our quieter months with rusty leaves, bright snow, and illuminating stars. This opportunity is perfect for practitioners in the Literary and Performing Art fields, and others working with clean and contained mediums. The main criterion for acceptance to Byrdcliffe’s AiR program is artistic excellence and demonstrated commitment to one’s field of endeavor. Artists working in a range of disciplines are encouraged to apply including writing, visual arts, weaving, music, composition, digital arts, filmmaking, dance, and multi-disciplinary practices. A selection of financial need fellowships are available but very limited each year, covering partial to full residency fees. Duration of residency The Off-Season (Fall/Winter) Artist Residency is 3 months (October 15 – January 15). Artists are welcome to come and go from the Residency as they please while in attendance. Accommodation Artists are welcome to apply to one of our nine historic, winterized cottages. Most cottages are single bed, with some being double (best for co-applicants). Cottages are all built and priced differently, and photos and fees can be found on our website. Artists staying in cottages are required to set up their own utilities for the duration of their stay, and provide their own transportation for laundry and grocery services in town. Disciplines, work equipment and assistance The Off-Season Residency is tailored best to creative thinkers with a clean and contained practice. Writers, actors, poets, musicians, composers, acrylic painters and drawers are welcome to apply (to name a few). Artists are required to have their own transportation for the duration of their Residency. Byrdcliffe does not provide laundry or grocery services, and Residents are required to set up and pay for their own utilities while in Residence (Byrdcliffe will provide utility company and set-up information).Studio / Workspace Our Quartette Cottage comes with an additional workspace. Our other 8 Off-Season Cottages have workrooms that also act as living spaces, and artists are encouraged to work freely in all parts of the historic cottages. Paper is provided for the floors of artists working with paint.Fees and support Fees are different for each Cottage, and can be found on our website. 3 month cottage stays range from $2,700 to $6,600. Artists are required to have their own transportation for the duration of their Residency. Byrdcliffe does not provide laundry or grocery services, and Residents are required to set up and pay for their own utilities while in Residence (Byrdcliffe will provide utility company and set-up information). Expectations towards the artist Programming in the off-season is limited and artists are invited to participate in the annual AiR exhibition the year after their residency. A welcome dinner and community nights expected.
