OBRAS: Residency in Portugal (Sept 15 – Dec 15, 2026) Deadline: 15 Aug 2026 Country: Portugal OBRAS is an international art residency offering artists and researchers time, space, and solitude. Located on land known as Herdade da Marmeleira near the village of Évoramonte in the Alentejo region of Portugal, OBRAS exists to foster the conditions necessary for deep work. Residencies at OBRAS are self-directed. Residents are given time to work without expectations of finished outcomes. The emphasis is on process rather than results, and on allowing work to develop at its own pace while living alongside a small group of international artists on the property. Opportunities to share work exist, but participation is informal and never required. About every five days, we gather for a shared dinner. Each resident prepares a dish, and we eat together. It is a simple way of marking time and staying connected without turning the residency into a social program. During their stay, residents are invited to give an informal talk. This can be about their background, their current work, or the questions they are working through while here. These talks are conversational rather than formal, and often reflect work that is still in progress. Twice a year, we organise an open studio and invite the local community to visit. Residents open their studios and share what they have been working on, whether finished or not. On those days, we cook together again — a larger meal this time — and welcome guests to eat with us. It is not a formal exhibition. It is simply a way of opening the doors. Duration of residency 3 to 8 weeks Accommodation OBRAS is a small cluster of buildings and outdoor areas that have evolved. The property includes a main house with several apartments and work spaces, two cottages, four studios, outdoor working areas, and a swimming pool. The buildings sit close enough to feel connected, but far enough apart that you can move through the day without interruption. Residents live and work across the property rather than in a single building. Paths and open views connect apartments, studios, courtyards, and gardens. The scale is small enough that people encounter one another naturally, but large enough that everyone can find privacy when needed. The buildings themselves are part of the region’s rural architecture. The main house is roughly two centuries old, a typical Portuguese monte overlooking open land with the medieval fortress of Évoramonte visible on the horizon. The surrounding landscape is part of daily life at OBRAS. Many residents move between indoor and outdoor spaces as they work, stepping directly from studios and apartments into the fields and paths that surround the property. Disciplines, work equipment and assistance Disciplines include but are not limited to: visual arts, video and film, installation art, fiber arts, jewelry, design music, writing, performance art, dance, theatrical, and research-based projectsStudio / Workspace The studios at OBRAS are straightforward workspaces. Some are large and open. Others are smaller and more contained. Spaces are assigned based on availability and the needs of the work. The rooms are simple: high ceilings, stone or cement floors, and natural light. There are no sinks or built-in technical infrastructure. Artists are expected to work within the limitations of the space. There are five indoor studios for working, ranging in size from 5x5m up to 10x30m. There is also a studio dedicated to music, which includes a piano and assorted musical instruments. In Addition there are multiple outdoor spaces to work. The land extends in every direction, and several defined exterior areas can be used for projects that need scale, air, or distance from walls. Some are structured by stone. Others are simply open ground. Wind, light, heat, and time of day become part of the conditions. Residents move between interior and exterior spaces depending on the needs of the work. There is no hierarchy between them. A workspace can also be a patch of earth, a circle of stone, or a stretch of open sky. The surrounding landscape is quiet but not neutral. It carries agricultural history, traces of earlier structures, and long sight-lines toward Évoramonte. For some artists, this becomes part of the work, for others, it is simply the ground on which the residency unfolds.Fees and support The apartments and houses are simple and priced according to their size and layout. All costs are per week. Casa Principal:    165€ (245€ for two people). Casa Vicente:      210€ (310€ for two). Casa Miradouro: 200€ (320€ for two). Some residents come on their own, others share the time with a partner. The spaces can accommodate both, depending on availability. Ateliers are available as needed, based on availability, and are 50€ per week. Currently, the ateliers have electricity and gas heaters but no other facilities.
