The application asks reviewers to examine how your research question, artistic process, collaboration model, and public engagement connect into one coherent practice. Every section reinforces the others. Members of the Contemporary Performance Network receive Strategy Coach Notes, an extensive guide that analyzes every application question, explains reviewer priorities, identifies common weaknesses, and shows how to build a proposal specifically aligned with CPR’s residency model instead of relying on general grant-writing advice. About the CPR Artist-in-Residence CPR’s Artist-in-Residence Program supports artists whose work expands contemporary performance through experimentation, embodiment, interdisciplinary practice, and artistic risk. Rather than funding the completion of a finished production, the residency focuses on artistic inquiry and sustained research over an entire year. Six artists will form a cohort that shares dialogue, resources, and opportunities throughout the residency cycle. The residency combines rehearsal support with curated public programming. Artists develop work while participating in CPR’s OPEN LAB and OPEN AiR series, formats designed around experimentation, conversation, workshops, and works-in-progress. Curatorial feedback, production resources, and peer exchange remain active throughout the year, encouraging artists to continually refine ideas through public engagement rather than waiting until a completed project. The application places significant emphasis on research. Applicants must identify a central research question that guides their residency and explain how CPR’s resources will advance that investigation. The application also asks artists to describe their broader artistic practice, define the work they hope to develop during the residency, and explain how the residency would influence their future career. These responses function together as one narrative describing an evolving artistic process rather than a single project proposal. CPR welcomes individual artists, companies, collectives, and interdisciplinary collaborations working across contemporary dance, performance, and time-based art. The organization encourages applications from artists working through experimentation, embodiment, new performance structures, and interdisciplinary research. Artists using traditional forms should demonstrate how those practices are being expanded or reimagined through experimentation. Applicants must be based in New York City for the majority of the residency year and may not have participated in CPR’s Artist-in-Residence Program during the previous five years. Current undergraduate students are not eligible.
