Contact Darkroom Residency Deadline: 01 Sep 2026 Country: United Kingdom *Currently taking bookings for Autumn winter 2026/2027 – Space Available from mid September onwards* The Contact Darkroom residency is a resource-based program offering artists 12 hours a day access to fully equipped colour and black-and-white darkrooms, a dedicated workshop room, and an open gallery space. The residency is designed to support both emerging and established artists, providing the facilities, time, and environment needed for immersive, hands-on making. Based in the South Hams, Devon, the residency sits within a landscape of rolling hills, rivers, and dramatic coastline, offering a rich environment for reflection and experimentation with the natural world. Artists are encouraged to draw inspiration from the surrounding area, whether working on an existing project, testing out new ideas and processes, or developing work that responds directly to place. Optional programs, such as workshops, guided walks, excursions, and local gallery visits, can be arranged on request, further connecting residents with the local community and cultural landscape. Duration of residency Contact Darkroom provides one-week to one-month self-directed photographic residencies from May through to October 2026. Artists who wish to undertake a longer residency are encouraged to apply and include a short statement outlining their reasons for an extended stay and their intended duration. Accommodation Residents are offered several accommodation options, ranging from bedsits and lodgings to dorm-style accommodation. Prices are typically kept between £35 and £40 per night. A detailed accommodation brochure is available on request. Residents are also welcome to source their own accommodation. All residents are welcomed with a pickup from Totnes station and a shared meal, providing an opportunity to discuss intentions and plans for the week ahead. Disciplines, work equipment and assistance We welcome applications from artists working across photography, film, and lens-based practices, as well as those interested in interdisciplinary work that engages with image-making, print, and alternative processes. Both emerging and established practitioners.Studio / Workspace --Fees and support £400 per week – For residency. £35 – £40 – per-night for provided accommodation. Both options include full access to Contact Darkroom’s facilities, chemistry, desk space, exhibition area, and technical support. Expectations towards the artist At the end of the residency, artists are invited to share outcomes from their time at Contact Darkroom through an informal talk, open studio, or small exhibition. This is optional rather than obligatory, and we welcome a variety of formats depending on the artist’s practice and preferences.
