2027 Residency Application Deadline: 19 Aug 2026 Country: United States Vashon Artist Residency supports artists by offering time, space and resources to reflect, create and connect. Located on Vashon Island, in the heart of the Salish Sea, Vashon Artist Residency offers a peaceful waterfront retreat with comfortable, thoughtfully designed living and working spaces for visual, literary, performing, media and interdisciplinary artists. Founded by visual artist Cathy Sarkowsky in 2021, this intimate residency was created from her desire to support artists in developing new work by offering a space that nurtures exploration—of practices, relationships and the opportunity to recharge physically, spiritually, and creatively. Each year, we host more than 70 artists in small cohorts throughout the year, with 2 and 4 week sessions. To support accessibility, artists are invited to pay on a self-determined sliding scale, based on their individual financial circumstances. Artists of all backgrounds, identities and disciplines, including those of diverse races, gender identities, sexual orientations and geographic origins, are welcome at Vashon Artist Residency. Duration of residency 2 and 4 week sessions Accommodation Vashon Artist Residency welcomes up to seven artists for each residency session. Accommodations include a private bedroom, a private or shared bathroom, a communal kitchen for meals and indoor and outdoor areas for dining and relaxing. Each resident will have 24 hour access to a private studio or writer’s desk with WiFi. Residents are responsible for the cost of their own travel, supplies and food. Disciplines, work equipment and assistance Visual, literary, performing, media and interdisciplinary artists are welcome to apply. We have a selection of tables, stools, desk chairs, carts, and other furnishings. Please let us know in your application what equipment you need, and we will do our best to accommodate. We direct residents to work with the Vashon Tool Library and Vashon Music Instrument Library, which have enabled many residents to borrow items to support their creative work during their time here.Studio / Workspace Four private studios are available for artists working in the visual arts. An additional workspace, known as The Shed, is ideal for composers and artists working with sound, including media artists, filmmakers, and other audio-based practitioners. Writers are assigned to our largest bedrooms, each furnished with a spacious writing desk, and can also take advantage of several additional writing spaces located throughout the campus.Fees and support To ensure accessibility for artists across a range of income levels, Vashon Artist Residency uses a sliding-scale fee structure. If selected, you will be asked to indicate the amount you are able to contribute, from $0 to the full fee, based on your financial situation. This approach helps support essential program costs, while maintaining access for artists of all income levels. The full 2027 fee is $2,550 for a four-week residency and $1,275 for a two-week residency. Selection is need-blind, and jurors do not have access to financial information. Contributions directly support the residency and help sustain access for future participants. Artists are responsible for their own food, supplies, shipping and travel expenses. Thanks to generous donors, an Access Stipend of $500 is available to artists who need to offset travel, groceries or housing expenses in support of their residency. Expectations towards the artist An optional studio visit, screening, and reading session for the cohort and staff provides an opportunity for conversation and feedback.
