CALL FOR ARTISTS AND CURATORS: A JOURNEY THROUGH TIME AND SPACE 2027, A NOMADIC RESIDENCY IN MONGOLIA Deadline: 31 Mar 2027 Country: Mongolia Red Corner International Residency is delighted to announce the third edition of “A Journey Through Time and Space,” a unique two-week nomadic residency program for artists, writers, curators, and other art practitioners from around the world, offering an opportunity to explore the contemporaneity and the ancient living tradition that coexist today in Mongolia. The program offers specific research areas, including the contemporary art scene in Ulaanbaatar, the extraordinary nomadic lifestyle, and the wilderness of Mongolia’s countryside, facilitated through field trips. This self-funded residency program is for those seeking new experiences, inspiration for their artistic practices, and networking opportunities. The residency staff will provide all necessary documentation and support for artists applying for grants to cover program-related expenses. Duration of residency The program includes two cohorts: the first from July 14 to July 27, 2027, and the second from August 1 to August 14, 2027. Accommodation As this is a nomadic residency, participants will move between different locations, experiencing a variety of living environments across Mongolia. They will spend one week in Ulaanbaatar, staying in centrally located shared apartments. During the three-night trip to Ikh Gazriin Chuluu, participants will stay in traditional Mongolian gers provided by a local camp. A ger, often referred to as a yurt, is a portable dwelling with a circular structure, a conical roof, and felt insulation beneath an outer canvas covering. Used by Mongolian nomads for generations, it remains an integral part of the country’s living heritage. Each ger accommodates three to four beds, so participants should expect to share their accommodation. Toilets and showers are available at the camp. During the three-night stay with a nomadic family, participants can choose between an individual modern camping tent and a traditional Mongolian ger, subject to availability. Both camping tents and Gers will be equipped with a sleeping bag, mattress, and towels. Mobile toilet and shower facilities will be available throughout the stay, allowing participants to experience nomadic life while enjoying basic amenities. Disciplines, work equipment and assistance This unique, research-based nomadic residency is tailored for individuals seeking new experiences, artistic inspiration, materials, and networking opportunities. The program includes visits to art spaces, studios, and museums, as well as meetings with local artists. Participants will also take trips to the countryside to explore ancient nomadic traditions and wilderness. During countryside trips, participants are encouraged to organize performances, create installations, and invite others to engage with their work. They can also share their discoveries, inspirations, and ideas to foster collaboration, networking, and the exchange of experiences and knowledge through process-oriented activities.Studio / Workspace No special studio or workspace is provided.Fees and support This is a self-funded residency program. The total participation fee is $1,900 USD, which does not include international travel costs. The fee covers airport pick-up and drop-off, accommodation, meals during program activities, museum and studio visits, trips to the Gobi region, and a stay with a nomadic family. We encourage participants to obtain travel grants from their national or international funding organizations. For selected applicants, the residency program will provide invitation letters and all necessary information for obtaining visas and grants. Participants are required to have travel insurance. To confirm your participation, a 50% deposit of the total fee must be paid at least three months in advance. Expectations towards the artist The program promotes close collaboration and mutual support among participants to create a positive experience for everyone involved. A respectful, sharing attitude is essential when traveling to other destinations. Participants may encounter unique challenges when off-road traveling and staying with a nomadic family; however, these experiences can also offer valuable insights and opportunities for growth. While we aim to accommodate various dietary preferences, please be aware that vegetarian and vegan options may be limited when traveling outside the city. Our goal is to make travel enjoyable, smooth, and efficient for everyone.
