TartAMI Residence – Open Call 2026 (July, August, October–December) Deadline: 31 Aug 2026 Country: Japan TartAMI Residence is an artist-in-residence program run by TartAMI (Fujise Co., Ltd.), rooted in Japanese tatami culture and contemporary artistic practice. Located in Izumi City, Osaka — close to Kansai International Airport (KIX) — the residence offers a quiet, lived-in environment where artists can work closely with traditional materials while engaging with local craftsmanship and everyday life. Artists are encouraged to experiment freely with tatami as both material and concept, and to explore cross-cultural dialogue through their practice, research, and daily interactions. Duration of residency - Minimum stay: 1 month - Extensions may be possible depending on availability From June onward, the residency becomes more suitable for focused production and longer-term projects. - Accommodation: private room available - Suitable for artists planning intensive making or exhibitions Accommodation Artists stay at Fujitatami Guesthouse, a renovated 60-year-old Japanese house located next to an active tatami workshop. - Private or shared rooms (depending on the residency period) - Traditional tatami flooring and futon bedding - Shared kitchen and dining space - Quiet residential neighborhood with opportunities for local interaction Disciplines, work equipment and assistance Disciplines Open to artists from all disciplines, including but not limited to: Visual arts Installation Craft Design Performance Sound Research-based practices Work Equipment and Assistance Used tatami mats are provided as free materials for artistic creation Basic tools and workspace support are available Artists should bring or source any specialized tools or materials required for their practice A small selection of tools and art materials is available on site for exploration and experimentation, but artists are encouraged to bring or source essential materials independentlyStudio / Workspace The studio space is located within the same facility and also functions as a small gallery The adjacent tatami workshop can be observed during production hours Studio use is shared and may vary depending on events or activitiesFees and support Residency fee: ¥250,000 per month Shared-room option available with a ¥50,000 discount. The fee includes: - Accommodation - Studio use - Utilities - Used tatami materials Not included: - Food - Transportation - Additional art supplies and specialized materials Expectations towards the artist Artists are encouraged to: - Develop new work or research during the stay - Share their process through an open studio, small exhibition, or informal presentation - Respect shared spaces and participate in basic daily upkeep - Engage with the local environment and community when possible Application information Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.
