Ninth Open Call: Two Individual Scholarships for 2027 For Fine Arts and Printmaking graduates under the age of 30 Deadline: 19 Dec 2026 Country: Spain A two-week, less-toxic electro-etching printmaking workshop. Artist residency in Gran Canaria, Spain | July and August 2027. About the Residency Programme This electro-etching residency-workshop introduces artists to an alternative printmaking process that is safer than traditional acid etching. It uses a fully non-toxic electrical method, eliminating the acids, aerosols, rosin and asphaltum traditionally used for etching and aquatint. Artist Alfonso Crujera will guide residents through the fascinating process of electro-etching on copper or zinc plates. Residents will receive direct, personal tuition and the opportunity to develop their existing knowledge of non-toxic electrical printmaking by applying these techniques to their own work. Programme Theoretical sessions • Introduction to electrolysis • History of electro-etching • Principles of electro-etching The electro-etching unit • Building an electro-etching unit step by step (No prior knowledge of electricity is required) • Preparing the electrolyte • Voltage and amperage Practical sessions • Plate preparation: filing and degreasing • Hard ground and etched lines • Open-bite electro-tint • Grounds: graphite-ink ground and BIG etching ground for lines and electro-tint • Soft ground • Semi-dry electro-etching • Safety guidelines Duration of residency Four weeks Accommodation Each artist will have a private room with an en-suite bathroom and shower, a kitchen for preparing meals, free internet access and an art library. https://crujera.com/residencias/fotos-de-la-residencia/ Disciplines, work equipment and assistance Visual artists, sculptors, painters and printmakers. All essential printmaking equipment will be provided, including the electrolytic unit, tools, grounds, proofing inks and solvents. The equipment needed for printmaking will be provided (electrolytic unit, tools, grounds, proofing inks and solvents).Studio / Workspace Workshop Access and Professional Tuition Residents will receive four hours of electro-etching tuition and guidance per day, five days a week. The workshop will be available to them 24 hours a day.Fees and support Two individual scholarships are available to artists under the age of 30 who graduated in Fine Arts between 2022 and 2026 and have experience in intaglio printmaking. Each scholarship includes two weeks of free accommodation and airport transfers on arrival and departure, representing a saving of €625 per artist. Selected artists must cover: • Travel to Gran Canaria • Meals • Electro-etching tuition fee Workshop and tuition: €1,320 (Copper or zinc plates and proofing paper are not included; artists must bring their own.) Comprehensive health insurance is required. Expectations towards the artist The electro-etching workshop would welcome the donation of a small selection of prints for a future exhibition of resident artists at an art centre in Gran Canaria.
