Teshima ShinAiKan AIR | Artist-Run Residency Open Call 2027 (Jan–Jun) Deadline: 01 Jun 2027 Country: Japan Teshima ShinAiKan AIR Artist-Run Residency | January–June 2027 ShinAiKan is an artist-run residency and cultural space on Teshima Island in Japan’s Seto Inland Sea, founded and operated by the artist duo usaginingen. Located in a former orphanage, ShinAiKan welcomes artists from all disciplines and backgrounds, providing time and space for independent artistic research, experimentation, and creation. We believe that artists should be free to develop their own practices without being required to respond to a particular location or theme. Artists are welcome to explore Teshima’s environment, history, and community, but there is no expectation to create work specifically about the island. ShinAiKan also hosts exhibitions, performances, film screenings, community meals, and other gatherings. Resident artists are welcome to participate in these activities and connect with the local community, but such engagement is not a requirement. Toward the end of each residency, we encourage artists to share their work or creative process through an open studio, exhibition, performance, talk, or other form of presentation. Duration of residency 1–3 months Accommodation Artists stay in private rooms within the ShinAiKan building, a renovated former orphanage now used as a cultural space. Shared facilities include a kitchen, bathroom, and common areas. Internet access is available. Disciplines, work equipment and assistance Artists from all disciplines are welcome to apply. We support independent artistic practices, including research, experimentation, and production, without requiring artists to work on a specific theme or create site-specific projects. As equipment and technical requirements vary, we encourage artists to discuss their needs with us in advance. We can explore possibilities for equipment and local assistance depending on availability.Studio / Workspace Studios are located in the same building. Workspaces are separated by glass partitions. Each artist has an individual work area for their artistic practice.Fees and support The residency fee is 100,000 JPY per month, covering accommodation, utilities, workspace, and residency coordination.
