Artistic quality considers the rigor, evolution, and commitment demonstrated through an applicant’s practice over time. Timeliness considers how the funding would strengthen or sustain the practice or organization. Community and field impact considers the applicant’s contribution to audiences, peers, New York City’s cultural vitality, and the performance field. Applicants are also required to submit one example of past artistic work. A second sample is optional. LMCC accepts URLs or file uploads for audio, visual, text, and image formats. For the 2027 cycle, applicants select among Project Funding, Arts Education Program Funding, and General Operating Funding. Creative Unrestricted is the General Operating Funding track and is limited to the performing arts. The program specifically addresses artists and small arts organizations with sustained bodies of work. LMCC describes these applicants as often falling between early-stage project grants and the smaller number of large-scale institutional funding opportunities available in the field. Funds may support organizational capacity, administrative infrastructure, and the broader conditions required to develop artistic work. Applicants should also consider Creative Unrestricted within the larger Manhattan Arts Grants cycle. LMCC permits only one proposal for project funding or general operating support during the cycle. An applicant selecting Creative Unrestricted therefore cannot submit another Manhattan Arts Grants proposal through Creative Engagement, UMEZ Arts Engagement, or Creative Learning during the same cycle. What Is Offered - 36 grants will be awarded. - $20,000 total grant amount per awardee. - $10,000 paid by June 30, 2027, supporting eligible 2027 expenses. - $10,000 paid by June 30, 2028, supporting eligible 2028 expenses. - The grant period runs January 1, 2027 through December 31, 2028. - Eligible uses include staff salaries and artist/curatorial fees. - Eligible uses include project expenses, venue rental, equipment rental, marketing and outreach, accessibility services, technical support, materials, and supplies. - LMCC also lists residential rental, healthcare, childcare, and debt repayment among eligible uses. The funding has specific restrictions. It cannot support capital improvements, building purchases, lobbying, political activities, scholarships or tuition assistance, cash prizes, fundraising events, religious worship services, activities completed before the grant period, or expenses already reimbursed through another funding source. Who Should Apply LMCC Creative Unrestricted is open to Manhattan-based individual artists, artist collectives, and eligible nonprofit arts organizations working in performing arts. LMCC identifies dance, theater, music, and multidisciplinary performing arts as eligible. Applicants working exclusively in visual arts, media/new media, or literary arts are ineligible. Nonprofit grant recipients must be legally registered, provide proof of a Manhattan address, have a core artistic mission and/or history of performing arts programming, and have an annual operating budget under $250,000. They must also provide the required NYS Charities Bureau documentation, IRS 501(c)(3) Determination Letter, most recent fiscal-year financial statement, and projected FY2027 organizational budget. Individual artists and collectives must provide proof of a Manhattan address. Individual applicants must be at least 18 years old at submission and cannot be enrolled in a full-time degree program. Individuals and collectives may be unincorporated, sole proprietors, LLCs, or S-Corps.
