The 2026 contest features two sections: “Beauty of Imperfection” and “Open.” The Beauty of Imperfection section invites photographers to explore the character, emotion and visual richness found beyond conventional ideas of perfection. Entries may focus on traces of time, ageing, cracks, irregular forms, vulnerability, coincidence, transformation and unexpected details found in people, nature, objects, architecture or everyday life. Ercan Arslan laid his academic foundations at the Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, Department of Photography, and completed his master’s degree at the same institution in 2019. At the heart of his professional career is his 30-year role (1993-2023) as a photojournalist and photo editor at Milliyet Newspaper. İlkay Öztürk is a photographer, instructor, and creative director specialized in gastronomy photography, visual storytelling, and brand content. With a strong narrative language coming from a background in journalism and publishing, she has been conducting professional work in communication, content production, and photography for over 25 years. Sumru Gözaydın is a senior corporate communications professional in strategic marketing and brand communication in the food industry. After her university education at Université de Nice-Sophia Antipolis, she joined Durum Gıda in 2020 as Corporate Communications and Marketing Manager after working for many years in various communication roles at established agencies and international brands. Open Call 2027 – Sardinia Island, Italy Deadline: 07 Sep 2026 Country: Italy Nocefresca is the first active and permanent artistic residency program in Sardinia. It is a house that welcomes artists and creative professionals from all over the world to the rural villages of Sardinia for research and creative experimentation, involving both participants and local communities in a cultural exchange experience. By inviting a limited number of artists in areas far from the tourist coasts, Nocefresca creates a sustainable experience able to contribute to the territory and support it in the periods when it experiences less tourist flow and it is therefore the most authentic and beautiful. The residency is primarily self-directed and, as an artist, you are expected to be self-sufficient in your practice. However, Nocefresca organises some activities to help you fuel your artistic process: – Presentation of each one’s practice to the group – Individual and group meetings with the guest curator for assistance and feedback – Opportunity to propose site-specific projects, talks and workshops – Final open-studio event, open to the public – Every month, a local person of our choosing takes the artists to his/her favourite places in the village of Milis and outside of it (transportation included) – Other outdoor excursions and explorations, screening of films, visiting artists and social activities with the local community are extra activities that can happen spontaneously during the residency and can be facilitated by our team. Accommodation Through Nocefresca, the artists have the chance to become authentic temporary inhabitants of Sardinian rural villages thanks to our network of locals supporting the project. Artists live in shared apartments and they can choose to have a private bathroom or shared. There is also the possibility to have a complete private accomodation in a cottage in the countryside. The houses are equipped with full amenities: kitchen, hot water, WiFi, washer. Bed sheets and towels are provided, as are basic kitchen necessities and appliances. The hosts do a general cleaning at the beginning and at the end of your stay. Each artist is responsible for the recycling. Free parking available on the street. Disciplines, work equipment and assistance Nocefresca is great for visual artists, photographers, writers, multi-disciplinary artists, designers, composers and creative nomads. We schedule curatorial assistance throughout the entire residency, but we are also always happy to visit your studio, exchange ideas or give some practical help. We can also help you organise a specific meeting with the community, facilitate interactions, put you in contact with local artists or recommend a less-known location. We have a series of basic equipment and some classic hardware; you are expected to provide any specific tools and materials you might need.Studio / Workspace Our studios are located in three different premises. Casa Bagnolo, Casa Oaxaca, and the Orchard Studio. Casa Bagnolo is the main hub of the residency. From here, it is possible to easily reach the countryside and experience a Mediterranean lifestyle made of peaceful days, natural-food diets and the company of warm communities. Here is also where Antonella, one of our main partners, runs the additional meal service. Inside Casa Bagnolo there are four studios, each equipped with a desk, rolling chair, armchair, storage space, and good lighting, and an open communal space with a library, a refreshment point for a cup of coffee, two desks for reading or writing, a corner with sofa and armchairs great for casual chats, movie screenings or just relaxing. Outdoors, Casa Bagnolo offers a cozy courtyard with tables in the shade perfect for working or eating and armchairs under the palms to soak in the Sardinian sun. There is also a shed with some tools functioning as a small workshop that can be accessed upon request. Casa Oaxaca is an old house refurbished by our hosts Italo and Leo, equipped with two bedrooms, two studios equipped with a desk, rolling chair, armchair, storage space, and good lighting, and an 80 sq m outdoor workspace in the internal courtyard: a small oasis of peace ideal for those who want to work outdoors, designed by our hosts: the local garden designers Italo and Leo. The Orchard Cottage is a countryside cottage located a 20-minute walk, a 10-minute bike ride, or a 5-minute drive from Milis. It is a fully private space that functions both as a studio and accommodation.Fees and support The participation fee depends on the kind of studio and the housing type chosen by the artist. The fees vary from 1,650 to 1,880 euros per month. Expectations towards the artist At Nocefresca, artists are free to develop their own projects without any restriction regarding topic or outcome. As a curatorial choice, every year we pick a theme upon which we establish our plan of activities. Local and regional artists across disciplines, including: - Visual artists (painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, mixed media) - Performing artists (theater, movement, spoken word) - Musicians who work with low-decibel instruments (solo acoustic, electronic, or experimental sound work suitable for shared studios) - Literary artists (writers, poets, playwrights) - Interdisciplinary and socially engaged artists What is included? - One shared welcome reception with food and drink provided. - 24-hour access to studio space. - Shuttle service to and from the Alexandria Campus, where MCA is located. Limited routes. - Cafe and restaurant located on campus. - All artists receive stipends for workshops and classes taught as part of the residency at the rate of $45 p/hr., min 1.5 hrs. What is NOT included? - Housing - Per diem - Materials - Commission fees. This is not a commission. - Stipend to attend the residency stipend. This is not a commission. ** Resident Artists and Ignite Fellows receive stipends for any workshops or classes they teach. Studio Dimensions: 11 ft. x 22 ft. Single and double occupancy options available. Residency Length: 3 months. Residency Fee Structure: General Artist Residency   For the 2027 Winter and Spring Residencies, 2-3 additional artists will be offered free studio space and professional development support. Resident artists are not charged any fees to participate in the program. The only cost is a refundable key deposit required at the start of the residency. Unfortunately, Mosesian Arts cannot offer stipends to the Resident Artists at this time. Ignite Artist Fellowships (Free for Artists) The Ignite Fellowship offers free studio space and professional development support to emerging artists from the global majority and historically marginalized communities, ensuring equitable access to creative resources and opportunities. Fellows are not charged any fees to participate in the program. The only cost is a refundable key deposit required at the start of the residency. Each artist also receives a $1,000 stipend to support materials, transportation, or project-related expenses during their residency. For the 2027 Winter and Spring Residencies, one fellow will be selected from this application cycle. We hope to expand the number of participating artists in the 2027–2028 fiscal year as the program grows. Do I have to show my work? MCA will showcase the 2026 and 2027 resident artists during their annual benefit exhibition, in consultation with the artists. The dates are May 14–June 25, 2027. In addition, as part of the residency, artists are expected to share their work and creative process through at least one public-facing event. Examples include: • Open Studio – Invite visitors into your workspace to share works in progress and spark dialogue. • Artist Talk or Panel Discussion – Present your practice, influences, or project outcomes in conversation with MCA staff or guest moderators. • Workshop or Demonstration – Offer a hands-on or observational session related to your medium or process. Resident Artists will receive a stipend for this session, if they opt to teach a workshop or demonstration at the rate of $45 per hour, min 1.5 hrs. • Exhibition or Performance – Present completed or experimental work in the MCA galleries (during May 14-June 25 exhibition window) or in the performance spaces at a time mutually selected by MCA and the artist, and as performance space is available. (Time TBD). • Community Collaboration – Develop a participatory or site-specific project that connects directly with local audiences. Residents are encouraged to choose the format that best aligns with their practice and goals, in consultation with MCA staff. About Mosesian Arts: The Mosesian Center for the Arts is a multidisciplinary arts venue in Watertown, Massachusetts. The 30,000 square foot center, located within a former U.S. Army arsenal, houses a 339-seat main stage theater, a 100-seat black box theater, exhibition galleries, classrooms, and rehearsal studios.
