Rather than focusing exclusively on artists in the conventional sense, the programme is particularly interested in practitioners whose work supports, connects, and shapes cultural ecosystems. However, they also warmly welcome individuals working in crafts, food, gardening, and other fields that fall outside conventional artist categories. Prvé výskumné zistenia z Trenčín 2026: Čo nám hovoria dáta? Ako sa zatiaľ darí projektu Trenčín 2026? Aké zmeny prináša realizácia projektu obyvateľom, návštevníkom či kultúrnemu a kreatívnemu sektoru? Odpovede na tieto otázky čiastočne prináša prvá priebežná správa výskumného a evaluačného tímu DATA26. Správa ponúka predbežný pohľad na vývoj projektu od začiatku príprav v roku 2023 až po otvárací víkend Európskeho hlavného mesta kultúry vo februári 2026. Nejde o záverečné hodnotenie projektu, ale o prvý súhrn dôkazov a dát, ktoré nám pomáhajú lepšie pochopiť, aký vplyv má Trenčín 2026 na mesto, jeho komunity, kultúrny a kreatívny sektor či návštevníkov. Pri tvorbe správy výskumný tím DATA26 kombinoval viaceré zdroje dát, od reprezentatívneho prieskumu obyvateľov a prieskumu návštevníkov počas otváracieho víkendu, cez fokusové skupiny a rozhovory, až po analýzy dát z mobilnej siete či etnografické pozorovania. Takýto prístup umožňuje zachytiť nielen čísla, ale aj príbehy a skúsenosti ľudí. Čo sme sa zatiaľ dozvedeli? Z doterajších dát vystupuje niekoľko dôležitých zistení: - Trenčín sa otvoril svetu a svet prišiel. Otvárací víkend prilákal viac ako 51-tisíc unikátnych návštevníkov zo Slovenska aj zo zahraničia a potvrdil schopnosť mesta hostiť podujatia európskeho významu. - Kultúra pomáha budovať vzťahy a dôveru. Dáta naznačujú rast sociálnej dôvery a posilňovanie komunitných väzieb, najmä prostredníctvom dobrovoľníckych a kultúrnych aktivít. - Obyvatelia sa chcú viac zapájať do kultúrneho života. Najväčšou prekážkou nie je nezáujem ani cena vstupeniek, ale nedostatok informácií a pocit odstupu od kultúrneho diania. - Titul EHMK posilňuje existujúci kultúrny ekosystém. Kultúrny a kreatívny sektor v regióne mal silné základy už pred rokom 2026, no stále čelí výzvam v oblasti financovania a kapacít. - Na kvalite života záleží, ale aj na mieste, kde žijeme. Rozdiely vo vnímaní mesta súvisia viac s mestskou časťou, v ktorej obyvatelia bývajú, než s ich vekom alebo pohlavím. Dňa 26. mája 2026 sme tieto výsledky predstavili aj na stretnutí trenčianskej kultúrnej komunity, kde otvorili diskusiu o tom, ako môžu získané poznatky pomôcť ďalšiemu rozvoju kultúrneho života v meste. Týmto ďakujeme všetkým, ktorí tam s nami prišli diskutovať, zdieľať skúsenosti, prepájať sa a rozmýšľať nad tým, ako môžu kultúra a výskum v našom regióne ďalej rásť a spolupracovať. O Otváracom víkende Trenčín 2026 aj o dátach a ich využití v kultúre sme sa rozprávali so Stanislavom Krajčim, riaditeľom Trenčín 2026, a Lumirom Matim, výkonným manažérom otváracieho ceremoniálu Trenčín 2026. Počas stretnutia tak okrem našich výskumných zistení boli odprezentované aj vízie, s ktorými do otvorenia titulného roku Trenčín 2026 vstupoval implementačný tím. Celé stretnutie bolo simultánne tlmočené do angličtiny a streamované, čím poslúžilo ako inšpirácia pre ďalšie európske hlavné mestá kultúry, ktoré sa na otvorenie svojho európskeho hlavného mesta kultúry zatiaľ len pripravujú. Kitty’s Laundrette: Circularity as Community Action News Archive “Everyone needs to wash their clothes in one way or another.” Never has there been a more powerful mission statement for a creative social enterprise. Kitty’s Laundrette (77 Grasmere Street, L5) is a laundrette. They offer affordable, eco friendly, washing facilities for anyone who needs them. They also happen to run one of the most exciting creative programmes in the country, rooted absolutely in L5. This year alone, they are starting a new programme of coffee mornings for parents of SEN children, running a huge campaign of hygiene insecurity, curating Art in the Park using Everton Park as a huge community canvas, and have just secured funds to buy an electric van, extending their laundry business to a commercial scale. Over the next few years, that’s not only going to extend the model of Kitty’s indefinitely, but it also makes a permanent and continuing dent in their, and their network’s carbon footproint. It has concrete impacts. Different organisations approach circularity in different ways, but Kitty’s continues to set a beautiful example for everybody. But circularity doesn’t have to be single big sweeps for impact, it can be about the way organisations are set up, why they were founded, and how they source their materials, or what happened to them later. Much of it is about thought and impact: how you effort makes change that makes other people’s lives better, and makes your environment more rewarding as a result. Breaking the Silence on Hygiene Insecurity, a project led by Kitty’s and LJMU, seeks to understand not just the numbers but the impact of hygiene poverty in the UK. How the inability to wash clothes, take showers or heat water impacts individuals and communities. The existence of Kitty’s at all is already helping that, but now there is a targeted scheme offer free washing and drying. It aims improve health, reduce stigma, remove shame, and improve opportunities for people using it. The scheme is managed by referral from community organisations in North Liverpool, but you can self-refer too. From creative coding and data visualization to animation, interactive media, and digital storytelling, this is an opportunity to transform climate research into an engaging artistic experience while working alongside fellow creatives across borders. The selected artists will collaborate across borders to develop a digital artwork or data-driven installation exploring the intersections of architecture, art, public space and climate action. The artistic process will use climate and urban data as both a creative material and a method of inquiry. Through data visualisation, creative coding, three-dimensional modelling and digital storytelling, the artists will translate complex climate-related information into an accessible and engaging artistic experience. Building on the programme’s preceding series of seminars, educational sessions and panel discussions, the artistic collaboration will begin with online exchange sessions in August. The artists will share their practices, examine the different urban and environmental contexts of the Netherlands and Türkiye, and collectively translate the knowledge, discussions and data generated throughout the wider programme into a shared digital concept. ABOUT THE PROGRAMME Running from June to November 2026, the programme brings together leading experts, academics, students and practitioners from the Netherlands and Türkiye through a series of bi-weekly sessions. The sessions address themes including: - Passive-house strategies and sustainable architecture - Climate-responsive education - Urban heat islands and city planning - International climate policy and the road to COP31 - Construction materials research - Disaster resilience - Climate change and heritage preservation The programme began with a guided tour of the new Dutch Embassy building as anexample of sustainable architectural design and will conclude with a digital artwork, student proposals and a collective discussion on future collaboration. Rather than treating art as a visual illustration of scientific or architectural information, the programme positions digital artistic practice as a way of questioning, interpreting and communicating climate data. Data can make environmental change measurable, but artistic practice can make it visible, spatial and emotionally legible. THE DIGITAL ARTISTIC COLLABORATION The two selected artists will participate in a collaborative production and research process between August and November 2026. Working as a Netherlands–Türkiye artist pair, they will bring together different technical skills, artistic methods and local perspectives to develop a shared digital artwork. The collaboration will focus on transforming climate-related data and the knowledge generated through the wider programme into an artistic experience that can communicate complex environmental issues to a broader audience. The process will include: 1. Online Meetings & Climate Data Research and Interpretation Facilitated online meetings will introduce the programme, connect the selected artists and create space for them to exchange their practices, technical approaches, research interests and initial ideas. The artists will investigate relevant climate, architectural and urban datasets from the Netherlands and Türkiye. These may relate to subjects such as: - Changes in urban temperatures - Urban heat island effects - Carbon emissions and energy consumption - Extreme weather events - Water systems and flood risk - Air quality - Climate-related risks to cultural heritage - Material use and the environmental impact of construction - Patterns of urban growth and land use - Climate resilience in public space The artistic process will draw on existing datasets and research previously collected or developed by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Türkiye and Aks Creative Hub. The selected artists will also be encouraged to identify and investigate additional relevant data sources in response to the direction of their collaborative concept. The selected data will not simply be presented as information. It will be critically interpreted, contextualised and transformed through a shared artistic methodology. 2. Digital Artwork Development The selected artists will work together to create a digital artwork that connects perspectives from the Netherlands and Türkiye and responds to themes explored throughout the programme, including climate, cities, architecture, and public space. To allow for flexibility in the exhibition, the final work should be suitable for presentation using a screen or projector. The artwork may take different forms, such as: - Animation and moving-image works - Digital or generative art - Interactive media - Audiovisual experiences - Projection-based installations - Three-dimensional digital environments - Data-inspired visual storytelling - Other experimental digital formats Artists are free to choose the tools and methods that best suit their practice. These may include creative coding, animation, digital modelling, motion graphics, interactive technologies, or other approaches. We welcome applicants from a variety of artistic and creative backgrounds. Previous experience with digital production is encouraged, but artists are not expected to master specific software or technical tools. The programme values curiosity, experimentation, and collaboration, and encourages participants to explore how artistic practice can make climate-related questions visible and engaging for wider audiences. 3. Final Exhibition The completed digital artwork will be presented during a closing event in November 2026 in Ankara. The artists will also introduce the conceptual and technical process behind the work, including: - The climate questions and datasets they explored - How the collaboration brought together perspectives from the Netherlands and Türkiye - The methods used to interpret and visualise the data - The relationship between the artwork and the wider knowledge exchange programme - Reflections on the role of digital art in communicating climate change The final format and technical display requirements will be developed in coordination with the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and Aks Creative Hub. FINAL EVENT Digital Artwork Reveal and Way Forward November 2026, Ankara, Türkiye The final event will bring together the artists, students, experts and participants involved throughout the programme. The selected artists will present the collaborative digital artwork and discuss how climate and urban data were translated into an artistic experience. The event will conclude with reflections on the programme, future collaboration opportunities, certificate presentations and a closing reception.
