Open to artists, curators, researchers, writers, designers and other cultural practitioners.
Open Call for first half of 2027 Deadline: 30 Nov 2026 Country: Germany The SomoS Residency Program for Artists, Curators, and Researchers provides a supportive and stimulating environment for art professionals seeking to realize an artistic project or pursue research in Berlin. The program centers on artistic production, critical exchange, professional development, networking, and engagement with Berlin’s cultural landscape. During their stay, participants become part of SomoS’s international and intergenerational artistic community, with access to an active program of exhibitions, studio visits, artist meetings, discussions, and events. Through this combination of independent work, exchange, and encounters with Berlin-based artists and institutions, residents can establish meaningful connections within the city’s wider creative network. Duration of residency Residency periods are arranged individually according to the applicant’s project and availability. Residencies may be scheduled through the end of December 2026 and beyond. Accommodation The individual live/work studios vary in size and configuration and are suited to different types of work. Smaller studios are particularly appropriate for writing, research, curatorial projects, digital production, and other work with limited spatial requirements, while larger studios allow for more extensive physical production. Residents also have access to an adjacent 100-square-meter communal workspace, which can be used for project development and activities requiring more room than the individual studios provide. Disciplines, work equipment and assistance SomoS welcomes artists, sculptors, curators, researchers, writers, designers, and other cultural practitioners working across a broad range of disciplines. Our knowledgeable and experienced team is available on a daily basis to support residents with their projects and research, provide orientation within Berlin’s cultural landscape, and assist with practical or organizational questions. The studios are also suitable for composers and sound artists working primarily with headphones, notation, digital or electronic production, editing, and research. The spaces are not soundproof, however, and are therefore not suitable for amplified rehearsals, sustained loud sound work, or acoustic recording requiring isolation. The program emphasizes individual attention rather than imposing a uniform working method. Support is adapted to each participant’s project, interests, and stage of development and may include curatorial dialogue, research assistance, introductions, technical advice, or guidance concerning relevant institutions, resources, and opportunities in Berlin.Studio / Workspace In addition, the 100-square-meter SomoS Artspace may, by arrangement and subject to availability between exhibitions and public events, be used by residents for larger-scale projects, workshops, presentations, rehearsals, photo or video shoots, project testing, and other activities requiring a substantial open space. This offers residents the possibility to temporarily expand beyond the scale of their individual studios when the development of a project calls for it.Fees and support Monthly residency fees range from €1,250 to €1,550, depending on the studio’s size, configuration, and suitability for the proposed project. Smaller studios, generally best suited to writing, research, curatorial work, and computer-based production, begin at €1,250 per month. Intermediate live/work studios are available at €1,350, while the larger live/work studios are €1,550 per month. SomoS is an independent, self-financed art space. Residency fees support not only accommodation and workspace, but also the curatorial, organizational, communications, facilities, and public-program infrastructure surrounding the residency. The fee includes the private live/work studio, use of communal facilities, participation in the SomoS residency program, and ongoing organizational and curatorial support. To make longer residencies and advance planning more accessible, SomoS offers several modest fee reductions: • Extended Stay — 5%: for residencies of four months or longer, a 5% reduction applies to the monthly residency fee for the entire agreed residency period. Residents may continue to pay the fee according to the regular monthly payment schedule; advance payment of the full residency period is not required. • Early Bird — 5%: when the residency agreement is concluded and the reservation payment is received at least six months before the starting date. • Full Fee Payment — 5%: for a standard three-month residency when the complete residency fee is paid in one payment within 14 days of acceptance. Discounts cannot be combined. If more than one reduction applies, the participant may choose the option that best suits them. Expectations towards the artist Residents are generally expected to participate in approximately 80% of the residency program, unless otherwise agreed. The program forms an important part of the SomoS experience and includes artist introductions, studio visits, discussions, institutional visits, and opportunities to encounter Berlin’s wider artistic community. SomoS is particularly well suited to self-directed practitioners with a developed artistic or research trajectory who value concentrated working time alongside substantive exchange with artists from different disciplines, generations, and cultural backgrounds. Participants range from emerging artists with a clearly defined direction to mid-career and established practitioners undertaking a period of focused development, experimentation, research, or reflection. The intergenerational character of the program is an important part of SomoS: residents bring different levels of experience, professional backgrounds, and perspectives into the shared environment. Depending on the nature of their project, participants may also work toward a form of public engagement, such as an artist talk, workshop, reading, presentation, publication, or other suitable format. This is not a requirement for every residency. Participants on sabbatical, conducting research, writing, or undertaking projects that require sustained concentration may instead choose to focus on their work while benefiting from SomoS’s artistic environment and organizational and curatorial support. Application information Applicants to the SomoS Residency are requested to submit the following: • A description of the specific project or research proposal to be developed during the residency (maximum 500 words) • A link to their website and/or social media • An up-to-date CV • An artist’s statement • A portfolio in PDF format Please send the complete application, together with a short cover message, to [email protected] with the subject line SomoS AIR Application.
