The proposal must demonstrate a precise relationship to one of the three designated sites and show how the work will function as a permanent outdoor installation. The selection committee will assess conceptual clarity, originality, site-specificity, scale, structural feasibility, public safety, sustainability, maintenance requirements, and the experience offered to viewers. Artists should study the site documentation before selecting a location and make every element of the proposal, from materials to installation requirements, support that choice. The Foundation requests a detailed production budget only from shortlisted finalists. Join the network to access the Strategy Coach Notes for this opportunity. About the Mamidakis Art Prize 2027 The G. & A. Mamidakis Foundation established its annual Art Prize in 2019 following three decades of activity supporting contemporary art and visual culture. The program commissions a new site-specific artwork that becomes part of the Foundation’s collection and remains permanently displayed in Agios Nikolaos. For 2027, the Foundation is seeking a large-scale sculptural installation designed as a distinctive outdoor landmark. The call is international and includes practices ranging from conventional sculpture and installation to sound, ecological art, land art, mixed media, natural-material construction, and work connecting artistic practice with the environment. Applicants must propose a new and original artwork for one of three potential sites identified by the Foundation. The selected artist will develop and produce the work between February and May 2027, with the completed installation scheduled to be unveiled in June 2027. The artist remains personally responsible for every stage of the work’s realization while collaborating closely with the Foundation’s Artistic Director and production team. The final artwork enters the G. & A. Mamidakis Foundation collection. Its construction, installation, and completion will be documented and communicated through the Foundation’s website, newsletter, social platforms, press activity, and publications. What Is Offered - €15,000 prize for the selected artist - 30% of the prize paid upon acceptance and assignment of the work - Remaining 70% paid following final delivery - Construction expenses covered according to a mutually agreed budget - Transportation and installation expenses covered - One return ticket to Crete for the selected artist - Accommodation and meals at Minos Palace - Transportation between Heraklion Airport and Minos Palace - One research and preparation visit lasting up to ten days - Collaboration with the Artistic Director and Foundation team - Guidance with materials, technical knowledge, production, and installation - Exhibition organization, press promotion, interviews, and publications - Possible endorsement letters supporting future funding applications Artists must issue a legal invoice or receipt for the prize and all expenses connected to constructing the artwork. Artistic duos may apply, although the €15,000 prize and construction budget will be shared between the two artists. Who Should Apply This opportunity is intended for visual artists capable of developing a permanent outdoor work at a substantial architectural or environmental scale. Strong applicants will have a practice grounded in sculpture, installation, sound installation, mixed media, land art, environmental art, ecological art, or natural materials. The proposal should respond directly to the physical and conceptual conditions of one designated site rather than treating Crete as a general backdrop. Artists must also be prepared to address engineering, fabrication, transportation, installation, safety, weather exposure, long-term maintenance, and public interaction. Applications may be completed in Greek or English. Mamidakis Art Prize 2027 Timeline - Application Deadline: December 30, 2026, at 23:59 Greek time - Finalist Communication: By February 15, 2027 - Production Period: February through May 2027 - Public Unveiling: June 2027 - Applicants who have not received a personal email by February 15, 2027, have not been shortlisted as finalists. Why This Opportunity Matters The Art Prize combines a direct €15,000 award with the institutional commitment required to realize a permanent outdoor work. The Foundation covers agreed construction, transportation, and installation expenses instead of requiring the artist to absorb those costs from the prize. Travel, accommodation, meals, research time, technical guidance, publicity, and publication support extend the value of the opportunity further. The permanent placement also distinguishes it from temporary exhibition calls. Artists should understand that the completed artwork enters the Foundation’s collection and that the award requires the selected proposal to be fully produced and delivered.
