Byrdcliffe 2027 Summer Communal Residency Deadline: 23 Nov 2026 Country: United States Preferred application date for Priority Review: November 16th, 2026 Applications close 11:59 PM November 23rd, 2026 Every Summer the Byrdcliffe Artists-in-Residence program provides over 60 Visual, Literary, and Performing Artists creative time within the historic, rustic setting of the Byrdcliffe Arts Colony. Community and connection are core principals of our Summer Programs and artists from all backgrounds and all stages of their career are invited to apply. During the Summer, four individual Communal Sessions are hosted at 3 1/2 weeks long each. Byrdcliffe offers opportunities to engage in practice shares, local excursions, community events, open studios, and exhibitions at Byrdcliffe’s Kleinert/James Gallery the following year. Communal Residencies provide a welcoming environment to connect with fellow artists, build professional and creative relationships, and socialize within a vibrant interdisciplinary community. Duration of residency During the Summer, Four individual communal Sessions are hosted at 3 1/2 weeks each. Session 1: May 21st – June 15th, 2027 Session 2: June 25th – July 20th, 2027 Session 3: July 30th – August 24th, 2027 Session 4: September 3rd – September 28th, 2027 Accommodation Communal Artists are housed in three buildings: The Villetta Inn, Eastover, and Barzin. Communal Residents receive a private bedroom, and have access to shared bathrooms, kitchens, living spaces, Byrdcliffe grounds + hiking trails, and a communal library. The Villetta Inn The Villetta Inn is our largest communal residence, housing between 10-12 artists per session in the Visual, Literary, and Performing Arts fields. Eastover Eastover houses 4 artists per session either working in the Literary Arts or a Visual artist working in a contained medium (drawing, textile, etc). Writers, poets, and playwrights receive desks or worktables in their private bedroom. Barzin Barzin houses 2 Ceramic artists per session, with studios located across the street. Disciplines, work equipment and assistance Byrdcliffe prides itself as being a multidisciplinary Residency open to artists and creative thinkers in the Visual, Literary, and Performing Arts fields. Each session hosts approximately 10 Visual Artists, 2 Ceramic Artists, and 5 Artists in the Literary or Performing Arts fields. At this time, Byrdcliffe is unable to accommodate: encaustic paints, artists working with heaving machinery (wood, metal), Glass artists + Glassblowers, and Dark Room Photography. Artists are required to bring all materials, mediums, and tools needed for their residency.Studio / Workspace 8 Selected Visual Artists in the Villetta Inn receive studio space behind their living facilities. These 8 Studios come with work walls, easels, work tables, and a slop sink. Ceramic Artists receive a private studio, across the street from their housing at the Barzin Cottage. Ceramic studios are located in the Ceramic barn and artists have access to slab rollers, pottery wheels, work tables, storage space, and electric and gas kilns. Literary and Performing Artists receive a desk or worktable in their private bedroom. 1 workroom in Eastover provides working tables and shelving (best for textile artists). Selected textile artists are also able to gain access to Byrdcliffe's historic Loom Room as a studio space for the duration of their Residency (this studio space is not ADA accessible and is located down the road from Artist Lodging).Fees and support Communal Residencies are $850. This fee covers housing on campus. Artists are required to provide all materials, mediums, and tools themselves for the duration of their Residency period. Artists are also responsible for their own groceries. Byrdcliffe does not provide laundry services and artists are directed to the local Woodstock Laundromat (5 minutes from campus). Merit and need based Fellowships, Grants, and stipends are available Expectations towards the artist No expectation is had with the Artist in Residence – except attendance at the Orientation Dinner. Much programming is offered towards residency over the summer. Artists are invited to give a artist talk/ practice share with fellow residents, join field trips to local art organizations in the Hudson Valley, attend group hikes and potlucks, Participate in Open Studio events, visit Byrdcliffe gallery openings and music performances, and participate in the annual Residency show the year following their Residency. FILE NAMING: first name_ last name_file name ~~~~~~ *WORK SAMPLE SPECIFICATIONS: WRITING: fiction, nonfiction, academic, prose, poetry: up to 15 pages. (pdf, doc, or docx) WRITING: screenplay, stage play, graphic novel, or treatment: up to 20 pages. (pdf, doc, or docx) MUSIC, VIDEO, & FILM: recordings up to 15 minutes running time: up to 20MB. (.m4a, .mp4, .avi, .mov, or .m4v). For time-based work – if preferred you can include a document with audio or video links (15 min max). VISUAL ARTS & CRAFTS: painting, sculpture, ceramics, woodworking, photography: up to 15 images of works.
