Applicants submit a 250-word artist statement, a 250-word project description, a 300-word statement of intent, and a 100-word response explaining why Mabou Mines is the right setting for their work. The application also requires resumes, work samples, and a basic budget outlining how the first $4,000 stipend might be spent. The strongest preparation begins with understanding the distinct purpose of each section. Artists should establish how the proposed work will develop through experimentation, collective exchange, and the residency’s available resources. About Mabou Mines SUITE/space Mabou Mines is a New York City experimental theatre company with a history of interdisciplinary performance, collective creation, and investigation into theatrical form. Its SUITE/space Residency extends this approach by supporting early-career artists developing new performance practices. The program welcomes work that challenges established conventions of theatre and performance, including cross-disciplinary, installation-based, and collaborative projects. It focuses on artists whose creative practices emerge from historically marginalized experiences and communities. Applicants are encouraged to bring artistic questions and projects that remain open to development, experimentation, and revision. The residency brings selected artists into an extended relationship with Mabou Mines and its artistic community. Residents participate in monthly collective meetings and receive opportunities for dialogue with Artistic Directors and members of the Mabou Mines collective. The program includes rehearsal access, professional support, and public presentations at different stages of development. In-progress showings are scheduled for May 2028, followed by a three-day performance run in May 2029. The structure gives artists time to examine their material, respond to feedback, and develop their performance projects through successive stages of research and presentation. What Is Offered - Two $4,000 artist stipends: Financial support, subject to funding. - 100 hours of rehearsal space: Access to the Mabou Mines East Village studio. - Technical support: Assistance connected to the development and presentation of work. - Administrative support: Organizational assistance during the residency. - Artistic dialogue: Ongoing exchanges with Mabou Mines Artistic Directors and collective members. - Professional development: Workshops with Associate Artist David Thomson through the Artist Sustainability Project, addressing finance and care. - In-progress showings: Public presentations scheduled for May 2028. - Final performances: A three-day performance run in May 2029, with a 50/50 box office split. - Complimentary tickets: Access to Mabou Mines productions during the 2027–2029 period. Who Should Apply The SUITE/space Residency welcomes early-career interdisciplinary artists whose practices emerge from lived experiences at the margins. The guidelines identify historically underrepresented communities, including BIPOC artists; immigrant, refugee, asylum-seeking, and undocumented communities; LGBTQIA+, queer, trans, and gender-expansive artists; women, femmes, and nonbinary people; disabled communities; people impacted by carceral systems; and underrepresented religious, ethnic, or linguistic communities. Applicants must reside in the New York City area throughout the residency, have up to 10 years of demonstrated artistic practice, and be unenrolled in undergraduate or graduate programs. Individual artists and collaborators may apply. Proposed projects must be noncommercial and open to examination and reworking. Mabou Mines SUITE/space Timeline - Application Deadline: November 22, 2026, 11:59 PM ET - Final Selection Notification: April 1, 2027 - Residency Begins: September 1, 2027 - In-Progress Showings: May 2028 - Final Performance Run: May 2029 - Residency Ends: June 30, 2029 (per the program webpage). Why Mabou Mines SUITE/space Matters The SUITE/space Residency offers artists an extended development period within an established experimental performance organization in New York City. Its structure accommodates projects that require rehearsal, investigation, collaboration, and opportunities for revision. The combination of financial support, rehearsal space, artistic exchange, and public presentations provides resources across multiple stages of a performance project. For interdisciplinary artists working with unconventional forms, the opportunity provides a setting where unfinished material can be examined through practice and dialogue. The emphasis on early-career artists and historically underrepresented communities establishes a specific constituency for the program. Applicants should consider how their work and development needs relate to this residency structure. Apply to Mabou Mines SUITE/space Deadline: November 22, 2026, 11:59 PM ET.
