Dan Farrimond 2 hours ago This month, Finland’s fabled Yle Text welcome more teletext art for the occasion of their 45th birthday! ASCII-style lettering, traditional Hungarian patterns, optical illusions and a chicken operating its personal computer – they all form part of our latest sixellated celebration. In 2021, Yle heralded teletext (or Teksti-TV) as seemingly “eternal“. Some years earlier, Hippocrates proclaimed that life is short, but art is long – especially so in the case of teletext. Well, maybe he didn’t say that last bit, but I’m sure he would have used teletext on a daily basis. And so Yle Teksti-TV powers on through the generations, a continued bastion of information, and of course teletext art, in 2026 and beyond. Since 7 October 1981, its characters and colours have shone brightly against a darkened background, cutting through smoke-filled air of pubs and bars, and the ashes of well-stoked fires in cosy living quarters. To induct Yle Text into the prestigious Club 45, artists from all corners of the pixellated teletext world weather map have sent well-wishes in the form of small but perfectly-formed pages – 1kb, to be precise. Visit the virtual teletext-hibition You can view the Yle Text 45 artworks on page 841 of the service, along with those celebrating Yle 100 that have been screening since last month on 840.
