Last-Minute Opportunity: Artist Residency at Haihatus, Finland – Autumn 2026 Deadline: 17 Oct 2027 Country: Finland A few last-minute places have opened at Haihatus Artist Residency for September–October 2026. If you have been looking for a reason to step away from your usual surroundings and give your work some space, this could be it. Haihatus is an independent, artist-run contemporary art centre in Joutsa, Central Finland. Set in three historic buildings on the edge of open fields, it combines the quiet of the Finnish countryside with an active and unconventional art environment. Here, you do not simply stay at a residency—you live and work inside an art centre. Across approximately 1,500 m², Haihatus offers studios, workshops, exhibition and performance spaces, an outdoor sculpture park and unusual spaces shaped by artists over the years. The art centre hosts exhibitions, concerts, performances and workshops and attracts around 7,000 visitors annually. The residency gives you freedom to use this environment in your own way. Continue something already in progress, start something new, write, research, build, experiment—or simply give yourself uninterrupted time to think and work. There is no requirement to produce a finished work. Life at Haihatus moves naturally between privacy and community. You can focus on your own work and withdraw when you need to, or share meals, conversations, studios and sauna with other residents and the Haihatus community. And this is a particularly beautiful moment to come. Autumn brings changing colours, forests, lakes, open fields and mushroom season just outside the door, while the everyday services of Joutsa remain within walking distance. These places are available now and for a limited time. If you can make the trip to Finland this autumn, Haihatus is ready to give you the space to see what might happen. Duration of residency Last-minute residency periods are available during September–October 2026. Tell us your preferred dates and we will see what is currently available. Shorter stays can also be discussed. Accommodation Residents live in Utopia House, Haihatus’ main residency building and the social heart of the community. You have your own private single or double room with a small kitchenette. A fully equipped kitchen, living areas, bathrooms, sauna, laundry facilities and large garden are shared with other residents. Utopia offers both sides of residency life: your own space to withdraw and focus, and a community when you want one. Shared meals, conversations and sauna often become a natural part of everyday life at Haihatus. A friendly cat also lives in the house. Disciplines, work equipment and assistance Haihatus welcomes visual artists, writers, performers, musicians and other creative practitioners, including interdisciplinary and experimental practices. The residency supports many ways of working—from writing, research and moving image to painting, sculpture, installation, sound, performance and hands-on construction. The Haihatus team can help you find suitable spaces, tools and equipment and solve practical questions around your work. Professional assistance with woodworking is also available. If you wish to bring your work to an audience, the team can also help organise an exhibition, performance, screening, workshop or artist talk.Studio / Workspace Haihatus offers much more than a single standard studio. Across three historic buildings and approximately 1,500 m², residents can find spaces for very different ways of working—from quiet individual practice to large-scale construction, installation, performance and experimentation. There are three large shared studios, alongside smaller and more private working spaces. Residents also have access to woodworking facilities and construction tools, screen-printing equipment, textile tools and sewing machines, an electronic art workstation, and AV facilities for photography, video and editing. Equipment and spaces for music rehearsals, sound and live performance are also available. The art centre itself can become part of your working environment. Haihatus includes exhibition and performance spaces, outdoor areas and unconventional spaces that can open up possibilities for site-specific work, installations and experiments. One of Haihatus’ strengths is the freedom to find a space that fits the work—not the other way around.Fees and support €350 / two weeks – one person €500 / two weeks – two people sharing a room €660 / month – one person €990 / month – two people sharing a room The fee includes accommodation, Wi-Fi and access to Haihatus’ shared living and working spaces and facilities. Residents also receive practical support from the Haihatus team, from finding suitable working spaces and equipment to developing ideas and organising an optional public presentation. For other lengths of stay or working groups, please contact us directly. Expectations towards the artist There is no required artistic outcome. Haihatus values process, experimentation and the time a residency can give to artistic practice. You can arrive with a clear project, something already in progress or an idea that still needs space to develop. There is no obligation to organise an exhibition, performance or workshop.
