It was founded on the belief that Europe will not be built by treaties alone. It requires something deeper: a sense that our destinies are connected. For over seventy years, the Foundation has championed the vital role of culture and education in fostering a shared European sense of belonging and solidarity. This commitment has given rise to countless programmes, institutes, campaigns, and collaborations, including its contribution to shaping and implementing the ERASMUS student mobility scheme. The Foundation’s capacity to adapt and innovate has uniquely positioned it to respond to, and often anticipate, major transitions in Europe. This legacy is now preserved at the Historical Archives of the European Union (HAEU) in Florence, alongside records of the European Union’s main institutions—recognising the Foundation’s key role in the European integration process. To encourage engagement with its historical archives held at the HAEU, the ECF offers two annual Fellowships: - Academic Research Fellowship – includes a grant of €5,000 to support a research stay at the HAEU, including travel, accommodation, and living expenses. - Artistic Research Fellowship – includes a grant of €10,000 to support a research stay at the HAEU, including travel, accommodation, and living expenses, as well as artistic production. Fellows work at the HAEU, embedded in the international scholarly community of the European University Institute in Florence. The Archives are housed at Villa Salviati, offering a unique and inspiring environment for research and creative work. Eligibility: Academic Research Fellowship – open to researchers in European studies, cultural studies, history, and related fields in the humanities and social sciences, including: - PhD and postdoctoral researchers - Early-career researchers within ten years of completing a master’s or doctoral degree - Independent scholars with an active research profile Artistic Research Fellowship – open to professional creatives in fields such as: - Visual arts - Performing arts - Film and audiovisual practices - Podcasting and audio storytelling - Documentary, journalism, or literary practices Applicants should demonstrate research-based practice and a clear dissemination strategy.
