CEAC residency OPEN CALL | Subtropical Island Residency by the Sea Deadline: 30 Sep 2026 Country: China The Chinese European Art Center (CEAC) was founded in 1999 as a joint venture between Xiamen University Art College and Mrs. Ineke Gudmundsson from the Netherlands, in close collaboration with Prof. Qin Jian of the same college. The center is housed in the historic Siming District, a charming old neighbourhood that effortlessly blends local heritage with contemporary urban life. Within walking distance are numerous small restaurants, bustling markets, cosy pubs, and the serene Nanputuo Temple, all set against the backdrop of Xiamen University. More importantly, the area lies just steps from the coast, where the city’s traditional fishing harbour remains alive with activity. This enduring seafaring culture, combined with the narrow alleys and friendly community, gives the neighbourhood a distinct character that naturally draws creative people from diverse backgrounds. The exhibition space, approximately 70 square meters, is modest yet thoughtfully designed, providing an intimate setting for displaying sculptures, graphic works, and other visual art forms. CEAC’s annual exhibition calendar features ten to twelve shows, each presented by invited artists and residents, and is complemented by a rich program of lectures, workshops, festivals, and outdoor film screenings. Since 2010, the center has also organized large-scale group exhibitions Rolling Snowball in major Chinese cities such as Shanghai, Nanjing, Guangzhou, Datong and Quanzhou, as well as internationally in Djupivogur, Iceland. The CEAC artists-in-residence program offers a supportive environment for artists, designers, architects, curators, writers, and composers to develop ideas, experiment freely, and produce new work. Beyond providing studio space, CEAC offers practical guidance on producing work outside conventional settings and connects residents with an extensive local network of artists, craftspeople, companies, and off-site production facilities. This enables each resident to realize their projects in the most effective and meaningful way. Moreover, the surrounding community – with its deep-rooted fishing traditions, vibrant street life, and warm hospitality – serves as a living source of inspiration, encouraging cross-cultural encounters that benefit both the visiting residents and the local neighbourhood. CEAC actively promotes cultural and intellectual exchange among its residents, local artists, and students of Xiamen University. Residents are frequently invited to give lectures or public presentations about their practice, and to conduct guest seminars and hands-on workshops for university students, fostering a dynamic dialogue that enriches the entire creative ecosystem. Duration of residency From one month to four months Accommodation The residency provides a private, fully furnished apartment of approximately 95 – 120 m², functioning as both living space and studio. It includes bedrooms, bathroom, kitchen and a spacious living room, with Wi-Fi, TV, DVD player, air conditioning, refrigerator, washing machine, bed, towels and other essentials. Disciplines, work equipment and assistance Artists from all the different disciplines are welcome to apply for the program. A platform for cross regional exchange, experimentation, research, creation, and collaboration. Access to a network of factories, studios, workshops, and laboratories offering a wide range of materials and media. Assistance in sourcing specific materials, locating workshops, and connecting with skilled technicians to realize your projects. Help in finding reliable research assistants and interpreters (fees are arranged directly between the artist and the assistants, based on project specific agreements). Opportunities to give lectures and workshops on your work for students of Xiamen University Art College and for local audiences. An invitation to present your research project at CEAC upon completion of the residency. Access to CEAC’s extensive local network, including artists, companies, studios, art schools, institutions, foundations, embassies, and consulates. Introductions to the local art community, artists, and faculty/students of Xiamen University Art College. Assistance with local information, practical contacts, and connections to relevant cultural activities (e.g., gallery openings, lectures). Regular dinners with fellow residents and friends of CEAC to foster community exchange. Possibility of taking part in international group exhibitions, such as the “Rolling Snowball” series and the Ars Longa exhibition in Djúpivogur, Iceland.Studio / Workspace An individual and fully equipped apartment (between 95 and 120 square meters) which has sleeping room, bathroom, kitchen and one big living room is used as a studio.Fees and support The CEAC is a non – profit organization and is not being subsidised for the Artist in Residence Program. Therefore there is a residency fee 12000 RMB/month requires to be covered by the residents. CEAC provides studio space, living and working accommodation, advice and assistance. Extra costs of individual technical assistance and making a presentation at the conclusion of the residence depend on individual wishes, but are normally inexpensive. Expectations towards the artist At the conclusion of their residence, artists are invited to present their research project and new work at the Art Center. During the residency stay, there will be also a possibility to deliver a lecture/talk or workshop to art students of Xiamen University. The CEAC can also help mediate presentation spots in other cities in China and, for those who like to travel, CEAC offers travel advice and assistance.
