Applicants should examine how their proposed project addresses the AGENCY theme and what can advance during the 12-week period. The program’s weekly cohort sessions, technical consultation, and public presentations establish specific conditions for development. Artists should consider how their methods, research questions, and intended outcomes relate to those conditions. Contemporary Performance’s Strategy Coach Notes examine the relationship between opportunity guidelines, application materials, project framing, and selection priorities. For this residency, particular attention belongs to the proposed project’s stage of development, the applicant’s relationship to the AGENCY theme, and the work that can realistically take place during the residency. About the Eyebeam NYC Residency 2027 Eyebeam’s 2026–2027 AGENCY research theme examines how agency is understood and exercised as artificial intelligence systems increasingly make decisions, execute tasks, and shape human behavior. The organization invites artists to investigate questions of power, autonomy, collective action, technological systems, and relationships among human and nonhuman actors. Its framework highlights the social and material conditions through which agency operates, including bodies, labor, political life, and technological infrastructure. Projects may engage directly with artificial intelligence, although the program does not require artists to work with AI or make technology the subject of their research. The NYC residency is the second of two AGENCY artist cohorts, following a virtual residency beginning in fall 2026. Six NYC-based artists will work within a 12-week structure that combines independent project development with weekly activities at Eyebeam. Residents must commit at least eight hours per week in person, alongside additional independent working time. The program includes opportunities to share work with peers and guest critics, participate in a public open studio midway through the residency, and present research and process at its conclusion. Residents also contribute material to an end-of-year publication, extending research documentation beyond the residency period. What Is Offered - $5,000 stipend: Each of the six selected NYC artists receives a stipend. - 12-week residency: March 15 to June 11, 2027. - Weekly cohort sessions: Regular meetings with fellow residents at Eyebeam. - Mentorship: Access to Eyebeam alumni and visiting professionals. - Technical consultation: Support for the technical dimensions of project development. - Work-in-progress exchange: Opportunities to share work in progress with peers and guest critics. - Public open studio: A presentation opportunity midway through the residency. - Culminating showcase: A presentation of research and process at the conclusion of the program. - Publication contribution: Development of text, imagery, or other materials for an end-of-year publication. - Independent development time: Continued project work throughout the residency period. Additional production funding, housing, and travel reimbursement are not listed in the public NYC residency announcement. Who Should Apply The residency is intended for artists with a clear project direction whose work would advance through studio time, critique, mentorship, and technical support. Eyebeam welcomes approaches to agency that examine technological systems, collective governance, power, autonomy, and the conditions through which individuals and communities act. For interdisciplinary and performance-based practitioners, the theme offers a framework for investigating embodied action, mediation, participation, and relationships between people and technical systems. These are possible artistic approaches within the published research theme, rather than separate eligibility categories. Applicants must meet the following conditions: - Live within New York City’s five boroughs. - Be available to work on site at Eyebeam at least one day each week for the full residency. - Apply as an individual. Collectives and collaborative teams are ineligible. - Be free of full-time degree enrollment. - Have no overlapping commitment to another residency during the program. Its research framework makes room for artists examining systems of control, distributed decision-making, labor, collective action, and relationships among bodies and machines. The program’s emphasis on advancing a defined project gives residents a concentrated period to test methods and develop work through technical consultation and peer exchange. For New York City artists whose practices involve performance, media, technological experimentation, or interdisciplinary research, the residency provides $5,000 in support, along with a structured working environment and opportunities for public presentation.
