MiSHŌ RESIDENCY 2027 Deadline: 30 Sep 2026 Country: Japan In the spirit of 実生 (mishō), meaning “seedling,” we aim to nurture the emergence of new ideas, perspectives, and creative possibilities. MiSHŌ Residency supports context-responsive creative practices through direct engagement with Fujino’s local community and its unique cultural and natural landscape. Work can be at any stage: from open-ended projects and ongoing research to the development of an existing work or the early contemplation of a new one. Past projects reflect this openness: work by artists at MiSHŌ has included live music events, body movement performances, outdoor installations, exhibitions, and site-specific research projects built around local crafts, environment, and culinary traditions. We support each artist by tailoring the program to meet the requirements of their individual proposal, and arranging activities and opportunities according to their interests, practice, and project.  This may include: 1. Connections to local artists, craftspeople, growers, and members of the community, creating opportunities for collaboration and research. 2. Facilitation of workshops with local artisans, exploring indigenous practices, crafts, and culinary traditions using locally sourced materials. 3. Guided neighbourhood field trips, or route suggestions for independent exploration. 4. Opportunities to participate in seasonal and traditional community activities of tending the satoyama landscape. 5. Organizational and promotional assistance with artist-led residency events, such as performances, workshops, or exhibitions. 6. Local transportation when public transport is unavailable, as well as limited additional trips when required to achieve residency goals. These additional activities stay open to all residents, creating space for shared, unexpected discoveries. Duration of residency In 2027 we will hold 5 residency programs, each 4 weeks: March 24 – April 21 May 12 – June 9 August 18 – September 15 September 29 – October 27 November 10 – December 8 For Spring/Summer sessions(dates March–through September 15th): Apply by September 30, 2026. We’ll be in touch with selected candidates by October 12, 2026. Autumn/Winter (dates from September 29th onwards): The application end date is flexible. We’ll review applications as they come in through March 2027. Accommodation The residency is based in a communal setting. All residents (usually 3–4 people) live and work within MiSHŌ House. Disciplines, work equipment and assistance MiSHŌ Residency welcomes critically and socially engaged artists, creatives, researchers, writers, educators, musicians, dancers, choreographers, permaculture designers, farmers, cooks, and practitioners working across disciplines. ///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////Studio / Workspace Each artist is assigned a private room based on their work requirements, which serves as both a bedroom and workspace. A separate, shared workspace is also available, as well as the option to work outdoors.Fees and support Flat fee ¥280,000 for 4 weeks (individual artist). For duo and family members staying together, contact us via email [email protected] Expectations towards the artist The residency will culminate in an Open Studio event, offering residents an opportunity to share their work-in-progress with the local Fujino community. The format of this sharing is flexible and determined by the resident. Additional interactive contributions during the residency, such as workshops, performances, readings, or exhibitions, are welcomed but not required. Any such events should be discussed and agreed upon before the residency begins, to allow time for organization and promotion.
