Haihatus Artist Residency Open Call – February–April 2027 Deadline: 31 Oct 2026 Country: Finland Haihatus Artist Residency is part of an independent, artist-run contemporary art centre in Joutsa, Central Finland. Set in three historic buildings on the edge of open fields, Haihatus combines the peace of the Finnish countryside with an active and unconventional art environment. Here, you live and work surrounded by art. Across approximately 1,500 m², Haihatus offers studios, workshops, exhibition and performance spaces, an outdoor sculpture park and unexpected spaces shaped by artists over the years. The art centre hosts exhibitions, concerts, performances and workshops throughout the year and attracts around 7,000 visitors annually. The residency gives you freedom to use this environment in your own way. There is no requirement to produce a finished work: you can develop an existing practice, begin something new, research, write, experiment or simply give yourself uninterrupted time to think and work. You can work independently or exchange ideas and collaborate with other residents and the wider Haihatus community. Exhibitions, performances, screenings, workshops and artist talks are possible, but always optional. Life at Haihatus moves between privacy and community. You have your own room and space to withdraw, while shared kitchens, studios, meals and sauna create natural opportunities to meet other artists. Step outside and you are surrounded by fields, forests and lakes, while the everyday services of Joutsa remain within walking distance. In summer, Haihatus expands into a lively art destination with its annual contemporary art exhibition, vegan summer café and Art Camping. The wider grounds include spaces such as a summer cinema, outdoor stage, tower and silo—part of a place where art is not confined to a white-cube gallery. Come alone, as a duo or as a working group, for two weeks to three months. Bring a clear project, an ongoing process, or simply something that needs time and space to become clear. Duration of residency Residencies range from two weeks to three months. For this open call, you can apply for a period between February and April 2027. Whether you need an intensive few weeks or a longer period to let your work develop, you can propose the timeframe that best suits your practice. Accommodation Residents live in Utopia House, Haihatus’ main residency building and the social heart of the community. You have your own private single or double room with a small kitchenette, while the fully equipped kitchen, living areas, bathrooms, sauna, laundry facilities and large garden are shared. Life at Utopia offers both sides of a residency: privacy when you want to focus and an easy way to meet other artists when you want company. Shared meals, conversations and sauna often become a natural part of everyday life. And yes, there is a resident cat. Disciplines, work equipment and assistance Haihatus welcomes visual artists, writers, performers, musicians and other creative practitioners, including interdisciplinary and experimental practices. The facilities support everything from quiet writing and research to performance, installation and large-scale construction. Residents have access to three large studios, woodworking facilities, screen printing, textile equipment, electronic art and AV workspaces, shared tools and professional equipment for music rehearsals and performances. The Haihatus team can help you find the right space and equipment, develop ideas and, if you wish, bring your work to an audience through an exhibition, performance, workshop or artist talk.Studio / Workspace Haihatus is not built around a single standard studio. Across three historic buildings and approximately 1,500 m², artists can find very different environments for working. There are three large shared studios, quieter spaces for focused work, specialised workshops and indoor and outdoor areas suitable for installations, performances and experimentation. If your project needs an unusual space or setup, tell us. One of Haihatus’ strengths is the freedom to find a space that fits the work—not the other way around.Fees and support €660/month for one person €990/month for two people sharing a room The fee includes accommodation, Wi-Fi and access to Haihatus’ shared living and working spaces and facilities. A confirmation fee of €100/person (€200 for two people sharing a room) is paid after acceptance and deducted from the total residency fee. Beyond space and accommodation, residents can receive practical and artistic support from the Haihatus team—from finding the right tools and workspace to developing ideas and organising an optional public event. Expectations towards the artist At Haihatus, process matters more than outcome. There is no requirement to produce a finished work, exhibition or performance. Use the residency for what your practice needs: making, researching, writing, experimenting or simply having uninterrupted time to think. If you do want to share your work, Haihatus can support an exhibition, performance, screening, workshop or artist talk—but it is entirely optional.
