Special Project Residency Deadline: 05 Oct 2026 Country: United States The Project 14C Special Project Residency is a short-term, intensive residency designed to help artists bring an ambitious creative project from idea to completion. Unlike Project 14C’s longer Artist Fellowships, which emphasize long-term career development and mentorship, the Special Project is fast-paced and purpose-driven, giving artists concentrated time, space, and resources to focus on a specific project. The program is multidisciplinary, bringing together artists and creative practitioners working across different fields. Residents receive generous studio space for up to 11 weeks, allowing them to immerse themselves fully in the development and realization of their work. Live/work studios are provided free of charge, with only modest fees for cleaning and utilities. Special Project residencies are offered in three sessions each year, with cohort sizes varying according to available space. The next multidisciplinary Special Project Residency runs November 20, 2026–February 7, 2027. Special Project residents become part of the larger Project 14C creative community, working alongside artists and creative practitioners from a wide range of disciplines. The residency also creates opportunities for artists to share their work with the public through open studios and other audience-facing programs, encouraging exchange between residents, fellow artists, and the wider Jersey City and New York City communities. Duration of residency 11 weeks Accommodation Special Project residents may choose between live/work accommodation and a work-only studio, depending on their needs and preferences. Artists choosing the live/work option stay in a furnished loft studio within Project 14C, allowing them to live and work in the same space and fully immerse themselves in the residency experience. Artists who already live locally often choose a work-only studio, while local artists who want a more immersive residency experience may also opt for live/work accommodation. Artists coming from outside the region may choose the live/work option for the duration of their residency. Both options allow residents to participate fully in the Project 14C creative community, programs, open studios, and other residency activities. Disciplines, work equipment and assistance The Special Project Residency is multidisciplinary and welcomes artists and creative practitioners working across fields including visual arts, performing arts, literary arts, music, film, fashion, architecture, design, and interdisciplinary practices. Residents receive generous live/work studio space for up to 11 weeks to focus intensively on the development and completion of a specific creative project. Residents also have access to Project 14C’s shared creative facilities, including Recording Studio 14C, Dance Studio 14C, the 14C Textile Lab, Visual Arts Workroom, rehearsal space, and other shared work and production studios. ARTS 14C staff and the wider residency community provide practical support, creative exchange, and opportunities to connect with artists working across disciplines. Because the residency is housed in a historic building, practices requiring open flame or toxic materials that produce fumes or dust cannot be accommodated.Studio / Workspace Special Project residents receive generous dedicated studio space ranging from approximately 840 to 1,504 sq ft (78–140 sq m), providing concentrated time and space to develop and complete an ambitious creative project. Studios have 10–12 ft (3–3.7 m) ceilings. Depending on the artist’s preference, the residency may be live/work or work-only. Studios may be used by an individual artist or shared by collaborators working together on a project. Residents also have access to Project 14C’s shared creative and production facilities, including the Visual Arts Workroom, Recording Studio 14C, Dance Studio 14C, rehearsal space, and 14C Textile Lab. The emphasis is on providing artists with the space, facilities, and creative community needed for an intensive period of project development and production.Fees and support There is no residency or studio fee; residents pay only a modest flat fee toward cleaning and utilities: Work-only residency: $300 USD Live/work residency: $1,000 USD These fees may be waived for artists experiencing special circumstances, and artists should not be discouraged from applying because of financial need. Residents receive dedicated studio space for up to 11 weeks, with the option of live/work or work-only space, as well as access to Project 14C’s shared creative and production facilities and multidisciplinary creative community. The residency is designed to provide artists with the time, space, facilities, and community support needed to focus intensively on bringing an ambitious creative project to completion. Expectations towards the artist Special Project residents are expected to focus intensively on the development and completion of the project they proposed in their application and to participate actively in the Project 14C creative community. Residents are also expected to share their work with the public through an open studio event, providing an opportunity to present work in progress or completed work, engage with audiences, and connect with the wider Jersey City and New York City arts communities. There is no required final exhibition, artist talk, or workshop. Additional public programs, talks, workshops, performances, or presentations may be developed when appropriate to an individual artist’s project and are optional. The emphasis is on active participation, creative exchange, and public engagement, rather than requiring every resident to produce the same type of final presentation. Application information Artists apply online through the ARTS 14C application portal – link and more information at arts14c.org. Applicants should submit: Documentation of their artistic practice, including clear images, video, PDFs, or other materials appropriate to their discipline. Individual image files should be no larger than 5 MB. A clear description of the specific project they intend to develop or complete during the residency, including the project’s goals and what they hope to accomplish during the intensive residency period. Information about their space and residency needs, including whether they are interested in a work-only or live/work residency. Applications are reviewed based on the strength and feasibility of the proposed project, the quality of the applicant’s creative practice, how well the project can make use of the time and space offered by the residency, and the applicant’s potential to contribute to the multidisciplinary Project 14C community.
