Memento Moris: The Anthropology of death Deadline: 29 Nov 2026 Country: Global Memento Moris is an online death school for artists. This 10-day webinar supports artists as they pursue their curiosity about death rituals and explore and develop their identity as a death-curious artist. The virtual residency focuses on the anthropology of death and involves daily live video lectures with international historians presenting research about a range of death related topics, and several short one on one meetings with artists who make art about death around the world. Built in to the 2 – 3 hours of daily programming are discussions, recommended assignments and show and tell. The program is designed to give insight into death knowledge and ritual from a wide range of perspectives. Outline Beautiful Death: The history of the personification of death with the director of Morbid Anatomy, Johanna Ebinstein Encounters Between the Dead and the Living: Decoding grave stone imagery with Harvard University Sensing the Supernatural: Relic Veneration with Dr. Jamie Brummit from the University of North Carolina Grave goods and funerary vessels The histories of professional pagan mourning women and the benefit of ritual for mental health with the University of Milan Victorian mourning practices Parades and processions European Dance of Death Motifs with Renee Magana of the Death Agency Death and Mourning Ritual in Contemporary Art with the director of the Biophilium Standard burial and cremation processes: a talk with a funeral director Dancing Decay and Change Through Butoh with Blue Ceiling Studio The history of death rituals around the world Guided Radical Mortality Acceptance Meditation Participants are invited to give an artist talk to share your work with the group.
