Bewerbungsverfahren Erstmals wurde das Auswahlverfahren für die zwanzigste Solitude-Generation zweistufig durchgeführt. Anlass dafür war die außerordentlich hohe Zahl an Bewerbungen in den vorangegangenen Ausschreibungsrunden. In der ersten Bewerbungsstufe – der Kurzbewerbung – bewarben sich 4.700 Künstler*innen und Wissenschaftler*innen um ein Stipendium an der Akademie Schloss Solitude. Hierfür reichten sie über ein Online-Formular Angaben zu ihrer Person, ihrem Arbeits- bzw. Praxisfeld sowie zu ihrer Motivation ein. In Praxisfeldern mit besonders hohem Bewerbungsaufkommen wurde im Anschluss an die erste Bewerbungsstufe ein anonymisiertes Losverfahren durchgeführt, um eine chancengleiche Vorauswahl für die zweite Bewerbungsstufe zu gewährleisten. Die ausgewählten Bewerber*innen wurden eingeladen, innerhalb einer festgelegten Frist eine vollständige Bewerbung mit Arbeitsproben einzureichen. Für diese zweite Bewerbungsstufe gingen insgesamt 2.091 vollständige Bewerbungen ein. The exhibition brings together moving-image works and installations constructed from 3D models and game assets collected online. Sato approaches these files as contemporary ready-mades: standardized bodies, props, animations, and environments whose circulation precedes their appearance within any particular game or virtual world. The exhibition takes its title from the outlet mall, a commercial environment organized around the redistribution of mass-produced goods. Sato places this model beside the online circulation of game assets, where digital objects pass through marketplaces, repositories, development software, and successive acts of reuse. Consumer products and data follow different technical routes, yet each becomes available for selection, recombination, and renewed consumption. At the center of the exhibition is Outlet (2025), a 4K video populated by assets gathered from the internet. Sato arranges them within suburban shopping malls, housing complexes, and related built environments. Under an executing program, the characters run, dance, and perform repetitive motions that evoke the behavioral loops of videogame non-player characters. Their activities continue without an evident player, objective, or narrative resolution. The assets appear to inhabit the environment, although their existence remains bound to scripts, animation cycles, and the conditions imposed by software. Sato’s work expands the conventional parameters of machinima. His source material is not a finished commercial game recorded during play. He works with the modular commodities from which games, architectural visualizations, simulations, and virtual environments are assembled. The asset repository becomes an archive, while editing and programming replace gameplay as the principal means of organization. The resulting images retain the visual grammar of game space while exposing the industrial circulation that supports it. Born in Hokkaido in 1999 and currently based in Kanagawa, Sato studied art and design at the University of Tsukuba before completing the Graduate School of Film and New Media at Tokyo University of the Arts in 2023. His practice examines the role of data, software, and platforms in contemporary image production, with particular attention to what he describes as the production relations surrounding imagination. Sato’s recent exhibition history includes Viewpoints of Reality in the Multi-layered World at NTT InterCommunication Center in 2022, Inorganic Friends at Tokyo Arts and Space Hongo in 2023, and MACHINE LOVE: Video Game, AI and Contemporary Art at the Mori Art Museum in 2025. His videos have also appeared at the Ars Electronica Animation Festival, the Taipei Fine Arts Museum, VIDEODROME: Machinima in Bogotá, and the 2025 Milan Machinima Festival screening in Los Angeles. His work is held by the University Art Museum at Tokyo University of the Arts and the Mori Art Museum. The venue adds another dimension to the exhibition’s discussion of digital circulation. BlackBoxKyoto is an experimental moving-image space developed by nenex, with approximately ten to twelve seats positioned in front of a screen. The site is a special place for treating moving-image works as cultural assets that can be viewed repeatedly, preserved, collected, and transmitted. For selected works in Outlet, nenex will introduce an authentication system designed to record identity and provenance in the sale of digital art. The exhibition therefore extends its inquiry beyond the images displayed on screen. The ownership and distribution of the works enter the same commercial and technical circuits that Sato examines through game assets. An opening conversation between Sato and Yosaku Matsutani will take place on Monday, August 10, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. JST. Matsutani is Professor of Sociology at Otemon Gakuin University and works across aesthetics, art theory, and moving-image media studies. The discussion will address Sato’s production process, the infrastructures surrounding digital assets, and the influence of software platforms on visual culture. This Open Call invites artists, collectives, designers, technologists, universities, research centres, start–ups, businesses, creative agencies, producers, cultural institutions, and multidisciplinary teams to imagine the next installation to be hosted by KNOWCASE, from 2027 onwards. The Open Call is looking for original, new (that have never been exhibited before) proposals in the field of digital culture. The proposals should include a combination of knowledge, research, science, and data with art, technology, and social impact. Additionally, they should include a participative and interactive element, encourage critical thinking and reflection, and be viable for exhibition throughout the entire period (minimum 24 months). Generally, proposals should tackle a theme or themes related to art, science, culture and society. Cotec is particularly interested in transitions: from an analogue to digital society, from a linear to circular model of production and consumption, and from a tangible to intangible economy. Cotec also produces research and knowledge on the R&D&I ecosystem, the climate crisis, the future of work, new forms of learning, social and territorial divides, citizen participation, the health of democracy, and innovation in the public sector. The selected proposal will receive a maximum budget of 100,000 EUR (+IVA), which should cover all costs associated with the project: conceptualisation, design, technical development, production, installation, maintenance, documentation of the proposal; as well as any artist fees. This also includes travel, accommodation, insurance and anything else required for the delivery and exhibition of the project throughout the stated period.

More than 140 applications were received from 53 countries, including Argentina, Brazil, Myanmar, Canada, China, Colombia, South Korea, Finland, Ghana, India, Iran, Lithuania, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, Taiwan, Thailand, and Yemen. More than half of the applications were submitted by women artists. VISIO includes the VISIO Production Fund, a €35,000 production grant. Among the applicants, eight artists will be selected to take part in the programme, while three will receive production support to develop new works in collaboration with Leonardo Bigazzi and the Lo schermo dell’arte team. The eight selected artists will be announced in September 2026. The call for applications for the 15th edition of VISIO is now open: applications must be submitted by Friday, May 15, 2026. VISIO includes the VISIO Production Fund, a €35,000 production fund. Eight artists will be selected, and the funds will be awarded to three of them, who will work with Leonardo Bigazzi and the Lo schermo dell’arte team to produce their works and premiere them at the 2027 Festival. Project developed as part of the National Plan for Cinema and Images for Schools 2025/2026, promoted by the Italian Ministry of Culture (MiC) and the Ministry of Education and Merit (MiM), with the aim of encouraging young people to engage with cinematic language and moving images. Between January and May 2026, artists Marina Arienzale, Veronica Citi, Roberto Fassone and Giacomo Raffaelli, Agnese Galiotto, Lori Lako, Claudia Losi, Francesco Puppo, and educator Chiara Tognolotti conducted workshops for primary and lower secondary school students from the I.C. Pirandello in Florence, the I.C. Pelago and the I.C. Teresa Mattei in Bagno a Ripoli, alongside professional development activities for teachers. In addition to the workshops, the project included a film programme, Lo schermo dell’arte YOUNG, aimed at primary and lower secondary school students from the three participating institutions. The screenings were introduced by Milo Adami, filmmaker and lecturer at ISIA Urbino, CIPS trainer and founder of the association 24FPS. The streaming channel of Lo schermo dell’arte, dedicated to artist cinema and documentaries on contemporary artists, is now available on MYmovies ONE. This collection features films that successfully straddle genres, as presented in various editions of the festival, focusing on the use of moving images and urgent contemporary issues. These films include portraits of famous figures in the art world, rediscovered personalities who are little known or have fallen into oblivion, narratives of well-known or distant events, and stories that introduce us to the thoughts and practices of artists and curators, accompanying us through the process of creation. The exhibition offers a compelling and critical reading of Florence through photographs by artist and filmmaker Armin Linke alongside historical documentary photographs from the Institute’s Photo Library. The exhibition path explores archives, museums, and collections from twenty institutions outside the city’s usual tourist circuits, including the State Archives, the Museo Galileo, the Opificio delle Pietre Dure, and the Italian Geographic Military Institute. The film reconstructs the history of the 8.75 mm film format, a unique format developed and produced exclusively in China between the 1960s and 1980s.
