Montreal is Calling Post date 31/07/2026 Produit Rrien CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS We are currently open to project proposals for our 2027 programming. — Artists wishing to present work at Produit Rien are invited to submit a short bio, an artist statement outlining conceptual and material lines of research, a project description (200 words), and 10–15 images (or time-based media links). Produit Rien prioritizes experimental, interdisciplinary and research-driven practices. Proposals are accepted on a rolling basis. Please note that we review proposals starting April 1st. It is important to note that the artists are responsible for installing and sitting their exhibitions. — Produit Rien is located in the building formerly known as “Produits alimentaires Oriental(e) Food Products“, a tofu manufacturer in Montréal’s Alexandra–Marconi district. Once a site of food production, the space now supports artistic production and exhibitions. In 2019, Paul Litherland and Karen Trask purchased a small building on Marconi Street, with the intention of creating studio spaces. Originally home to Montreal’s first tofu production company, the building was transformed into three separate studio spaces. Realizing that maintaining the front-facing studio as a private workspace would be financially unsustainable, they chose instead to open it to other artists on a short-term basis, allowing the space to engage directly with the street and the neighbourhood. Searching for a name, Paul and Karen removed some letters from the original tofu factory sign above the door: Produits Alimentaires Oriental(e) Inc became Produit Rien. Produit Rien’s first exhibition, All or Nothing / Tout ou rien, opened in April 2020 during the COVID lockdown. Curated by Donald Goodes, the duo exhibition of Trask and Litherland’s work, marked the space’s slow opening, welcoming guests individually or in pairs. Since its opening, Produit Rien has welcomed over 80 different projects spanning visual arts, experimental music, performances, poetry readings, book launches and community initiatives. Notably, Voisiner / Neighbouring, a group exhibition featuring professional and amateur artists living within a 400-metre radius of the space. Fifty-two artists contributed seventy-five works, installed salon-style throughout the gallery. — Selection Process Produit Rien operates as an independent, self-funded space. Exhibitions are selected through a curatorial review process, and dates are scheduled according to calendar availability. Once confirmed, the space is made available on a rental basis, with terms established in relation to the scope and duration of each project. Produit Rien does not take commission on artwork sales. As the space does not receive public funding for programming, rental fees directly support operational and maintenance costs. Standard exhibition rentals are typically fourteen days. Subject to scheduling, Produit Rien also welcomes workshops, performances, readings, and other short-format events. Longer-term rentals may be considered depending on availability. Nové umelecké diela pre krajinu Považia. LANDMARKS predstavuje víťazné projekty Trenčín 2026 – Európske hlavné mesto kultúry v spolupráci s Oblastnou organizáciou cestovného ruchu Región Považie predstavujú víťazné projekty medzinárodnej otvorenej výzvy LANDMARKS. Projekt prepája súčasné umenie, krajinu a kultúrne dedičstvo regiónu prostredníctvom nových site-specific umeleckých diel, ktoré vzniknú na významných lokalitách Považia. Cieľom výzvy bolo vytvoriť umelecké zásahy do krajiny, ktoré citlivo reagujú na charakter jednotlivých miest, ich prírodné prostredie, históriu aj miestne príbehy. Odborná porota vybrala štyri projekty, ktoré prinesú nové pohľady na krajinu a vytvoria priestor na zastavenie, pozorovanie a objavovanie. Veľká Javorina: Adam Hudec – Pešo s Holubym Projekt Pešo s Holubym nadväzuje na odkaz botanika Jozefa Ľudovíta Holubyho, ktorý desaťročia spoznával krajinu Bielych Karpát prostredníctvom peších botanických výprav. Adam Hudec vytvorí približne 1,2 km dlhý okružný chodník v okolí Holubyho chaty pozostávajúci z viacerých krajinno-umeleckých intervencií. Tie budú návštevníkov viesť k spomaleniu, pozorovaniu a citlivejšiemu vnímaniu prírody. Každé zastavenie predstaví špekulatívnu víziu biodiverzity roku 2050 a bude skúmať vzťahy medzi človekom, rastlinami, hubami, živočíchmi a krajinou v čase klimatickej zmeny. Intervencie vzniknú z kmeňov stromov odstránených z bezpečnostných alebo zdravotných dôvodov a postupne sa stanú živými mikrobiotopmi, ktoré bude ďalej formovať samotná príroda. Beckov – Pri zvoničkách: Jaroslav Kyša – Zasiate v sedimentoch Monumentálny objekt z lokálneho vápenca od Jaroslava Kyšu pracuje s témou geologického času a prirodzených procesov premeny krajiny. Masívny blok kameňa bude otočený tak, aby jeho pôvodne horizontálne sedimentačné vrstvy získali vertikálnu polohu. Do vyfrézovaných zárezov budú môcť návštevníci vkladať semená, rastliny či konáre a spoluvytvárať tak novú vrstvu sedimentu. Dielo bude postupne meniť samotné počasie a prírodné procesy. Beckov – Beckovské Skalice: Šimon Chovan – Dionýzov atlas Projekt Dionýzov atlas odkazuje na prácu geológa a paleontológa Dionýza Štúra a jeho výskum skamenelých rastlín. Autor vytvorí súbor vápencových objektov s vygravírovanými rastlinami typickými pre lokalitu Beckovských Skalíc – hlaváčikom jarným, kavyľom drsnostebľovým a ľanom chlpatým. Dielo prepája geológiu, botaniku a súčasné umenie a vytvára dialóg medzi minulosťou krajiny a jej možnou budúcnosťou v podmienkach klimatických zmien. Cyklomost Beluša – Lednické Rovne: ateliér Woven – Arbor Oblita Ateliér Woven vytvorí monumentálny objekt pripomínajúci dutý kmeň stromu. Dielo ponúkne návštevníkom možnosť vstúpiť dovnútra, pozorovať krajinu cez kruhové priezory a objaviť známe miesto z novej perspektívy. Organická konštrukcia odkazuje na prírodné vrstvy krajiny. Objekt bude miestom hry, oddychu aj kontemplácie. Súčasťou série LANDMARKS bude aj dielo japonskej umelkyne Yuka Nomura Do série LANDMARKS sa zapojí aj permanentná inštalácia japonskej umelkyne Yuka Nomura s názvom Čerešňová kôstka, ktorú vypľulo nebo. Dielo bude otvorené 21. augusta 2026 o 17.00 hod. v Čerešňovom sade na Brezine v Trenčíne. Nomura vytvára sochu v tvare čerešňovej kôstky ako symbol zrodu, putovania a pokračovania prírodného cyklu. Pomocou dreva, slamy a hliny premieňa jednoduchý prírodný fragment na poetický objekt pripomínajúci skrytý potenciál a neustálu premenu krajiny. Projekt LANDMARKS vytvorí sieť umeleckých zastavení v krajine, ktoré prepájajú súčasné umenie s prírodným a kultúrnym dedičstvom regiónu. Prostredníctvom land artu a site-specific intervencií pozýva návštevníkov objavovať Považie novým spôsobom – spomaliť, vnímať charakter jednotlivých miest a nachádzať v krajine nové príbehy, vrstvy a súvislosti. The Power of Play, opening at CityUHK’s Indra and Harry Banga Gallery on 4 July 2026, treats that ordinary paradox as an object of cultural inquiry. Curated by Espen Aarseth, Dean and Chair Professor of Game Studies at the School of Creative Media, the exhibition marks the gallery’s tenth anniversary and frames play as a serious form of symbolic, social, and technological activity. The show runs through 25 October 2026. The exhibition’s premise is that play precedes many of the institutions that later attempted to discipline it. CityUHK’s curatorial prologue invokes Johan Huizinga’s familiar claim that play is older than civilization, while the exhibition asks what games do once they enter ritual, education, competition, industry, addiction discourse, and computational culture. The official section headings make the range visible: Reimagining Senet, Lost? In the Labyrinths, Good, Bad, or Innocent Fun?, From Gaming to eSport, Minecraft, What Is an Indie Game?, and Game Addiction. Reimagining Senet opens the exhibition with one of the oldest known board games, associated with ancient Egypt and the afterlife. The section includes a historically informed reconstruction and contemporary reinterpretations developed by postgraduate students from the School of Creative Media’s Art and Activist Games Workshop. This is a productive curatorial decision: the ancient game is treated neither as a museum relic nor as a simple ancestor of modern game design, but as a system whose rules, cosmology, and material form can still be tested through play. Lost? In the Labyrinths moves the visitor into VR. The work draws on three maze traditions: Chartres Cathedral in France, Hampton Court Palace near London, and Villa Pisani in Italy. The labyrinth here is not reducible to spatial puzzle-solving. It also carries religious, architectural, and bodily histories, since the player’s progress depends on orientation, memory, hesitation, and return. The exhibition’s more contemporary sections turn to the moral and political anxieties that repeatedly attach themselves to games. Good, Bad, or Innocent Fun? addresses suspicion toward play across history, including gambling and modern debates around video game violence. Game Addiction asks what addiction means when applied to a medium built on repetition, reward, mastery, and prolonged attention. The topic could easily become moralizing, but the exhibition’s framing suggests a more useful question: how societies decide when play becomes excessive, and who receives the authority to make that judgment. From Gaming to eSport examines the transformation of digital play into organized competition and mass spectatorship. Early 2000s titles such as Counter-Strike and Quake III Arena appear in this section, placing first-person shooters within a genealogy of skill, reflex, team coordination, broadcast culture, and professionalization. The move from player to spectator is central here. eSport makes visible what games have long contained: a public performance of rule-bound competence. Minecraft receives its own section, an appropriate choice given its unusual position between game, tool, platform, and participatory archive. The CityUHK material describes Minecraft as a sandbox, builder, and open-ended game released by Mojang Studios in 2011, and the exhibition invites visitors into a virtual city that begins at a newly constructed City University of Hong Kong in Minecraft. In this context, Minecraft appears as a medium for collective construction rather than a fixed work. It belongs as much to player communities, mods, and shared servers as to the company that released it. The most striking newly credited work appears to be Buckets of Fun, a real-time collaborative robotic game designed by Espen Aarseth and Pok Yin Victor Leung. Leung, Assistant Professor at CityUHK’s School of Creative Media, works across art, technology, architecture, robotic fabrication, computational design, custom machines, and interactive systems. In Buckets of Fun, two teams of six players compete by controlling industrial robot arms, with control distributed across participants rather than assigned to a single operator. The game turns automation into a problem of coordination: no player owns the machine, yet every gesture affects its movement. The Power of Play refuses to isolate games within a single chronology. Senet, labyrinths, eSport, Minecraft, indie production, and robotic play occupy different historical registers, but the exhibition reads them through actions: moving, choosing, failing, waiting, watching, collaborating, and trying again. The exhibition looks especially relevant because it connects game studies, media archaeology, playable installation, and contemporary digital art without treating video games as a novelty category. It understands play as a cultural technique, a technological interface, and a form of social rehearsal. Visitors will find the exhibition at the Indra and Harry Banga Gallery, located on the 18th floor of the Lau Ming Wai Academic Building at CityUHK. The gallery’s visitor information lists opening hours as 11:00 to 19:00 from Tuesday to Sunday, with Mondays closed, and the booking page recommends online registration for visitors who are not affiliated with CityUHK. With an enhanced programme for families – this new area of the festival site will feature dance, storytelling, singing, drumming, a host of creative workshops, games, and a range of arts and crafts and child-friendly entertainment – for even the youngest African and Caribbean music aficionados! Building on the festival’s 18 year relationship with world dance specialists Movema, and the always-popular Oyé Active Zone, the festival continues this partnership to launch the new Family Zone at Oyé ’26. The Oyé Family Zone will host the Movema Dance Tent and new Kukina Creative Tent featuring relaxing and inspiring African Diaspora inspired activities, including storytelling, singing, drumming, arts, crafts, dance and holistic practices. They will be complemented with family friendly performances, creative activities, and educational and environmental workshops – creating a diverse and vibrant area for all ages to enjoy. On the Sunday of the festival, expect huge beats from the Afro-Brazilian mega-bloco Katumba as they collaborate with Dancing Queens to parade around the festival site, creating a rhythmic explosion as Caribbean carnival meets Brazilian carnival. The application is submitted in tandem between the artists and cultural actors and the host organisations. Scholarships awarded through the programme last up to 15 months and the funding period can start from 15 January 2027. Each article considers how artists translate game imagery, virtual camera systems, player-made content, and the temporal logic of play into material form, treating the canvas as a site where digital experience is edited and made durable. A female-coded avatar bends over a tiled floor. Her electric-blue top and magenta skirt retain the immaculate saturation of a customization menu while a translucent green stream falls from her mouth into a fluorescent puddle. Heels stay planted beneath a torso folded into an ungainly arc. The character loses composure inside an image that remains clinically clean. Vomit has neither thickness nor splatter. It lies across the scene as a chromatic instruction telling the player, or rather, the viewer, how to read the body. The painting isolates a basic operation of life simulation. A gameplay condition must acquire a visible form in order to be legible: hunger lowers a meter; fatigue produces a slouch; illness activates a prescribed animation. Yazov removes the onscreen interface that would explain the event, enlarges the avatar and transfers the scene to canvas. A passing status indicator becomes an extended encounter with a virtual body whose distress can assume only the forms permitted by its rig. This process of translation runs through Yazov’s work. The figures solicit recognition as people while displaying the geometry, textures and programmed behaviours that construct them. In a recent profile, the artist describes their appearance as “closer to what you’d call mid poly,” correcting the reflex that classifies any visibly polygonal game image as low-poly. In 3D production, mid-poly is an informal, context-dependent designation for an intermediate degree of geometric resolution. The artist’s models carry enough detail to sustain posture, clothing and identity, yet their manufacture remains visible in moulded hair, conspicuous joints and faces assembled from a restricted arrangement of planes. Emotion appears as a property of the model, rendered through poses and effects. Clearly, mid-poly is not a region of the Uncanny Valley...

The awareness of movement pathways inside the body extends to awareness of others and enriches observation between bodies in contact. Days 1-5 Training Ground, Days 6-8 Playground. Chilkoot Trail Artist Residency Call for Artists Open Call Country: Canada Throughout history, artists have seized the opportunity to immerse themselves in the natural landscape to gain new inspiration and perspectives. The Chilkoot Trail Artist Residency is an internationally recognized program providing that experience. The Yukon Arts Centre, Parks Canada, and the US National Park Service have come together to create an opportunity for established artists to spend time creating and hiking on the Chilkoot Trail. Long used as a trade route by the Tlingit and Tagish traders in the region, the trail became the favoured way to reach the Klondike during the Gold Rush of the 1890’s. The 53km / 33mi route travels from Alaska to northern British Columbia along the Coast Mountains of the Pacific, through diverse landscapes, offering artists ‘in’ residence the experience of being up close and personal with incredibly unique natural, historic and cultural environments. The residency is planned so that during their time on the trail, artists will be able to spend one to three days at each campsite interacting with hikers along the way. Following their time on the trail artists will spend additional days in residence interacting with the public at Skagway, Alaska and Whitehorse, Yukon. There are two different trail options for artists who wish to attend the residency. Option 1: 10 days on trail / 2 days off trail: Artists will hike the entire trail beginning in Dyea and finishing in Bennett, with time spent at various camp locations along the way. Artists will have the opportunity to create works and interact with hikers at each campsite. This option requires artists to carry all necessary equipment and art materials. This option is suited to those who have demonstrated significant experience with backcountry hiking and camping. Following their time on the trail all artists will spend one day in residence in Skagway Alaska, and a second day in residence in Whitehorse Yukon. Artists will engage with the public through art demonstrations, art talks, workshops or a combination of activities. Option 2: 5-10 days on trail / 2 days off trail: Artists will be based on the trail at Bennett, BC, Canada for a minimum of 5 days and a maximum of 10 days to create works and interact with the public in this historic town site. Artists can undertake day and overnight trips to surrounding areas of the trail. Bennett is accessible by train which can facilitate more artist materials being brought to the site. This option is accessible to a wide range of individuals with a variety of camping experience. Artists in this option will not hike the entire trail from start to finish but can visit multiple camp sites. Following their time on the trail all artists will spend one day in residence in Skagway Alaska, and a second day in residence in Whitehorse Yukon. Artists will engage with the public through art demonstrations, art talks, workshops or a combination of activities. Due to the nature of this program there are things you need to know before applying: Important Facts - Most artists find the residency is a 14-day commitment including their travel time too and from the trail. - Option 1 should only be attempted by physically fit individuals, experienced with multi-day, back country hiking - Option 2 is accessible to a wide range of individuals with a variety of camping experience - All residencies will take place between late June and early August. Residencies will occur on separate weeks and have no overlap - This program is open to all nationalities, but applicants must provide proof of proficiency in English - Applications are due by February 3rd for the following calendar year - Artists will provide artist demonstrations, talks and/or workshops along the trail with fellow hikers. - Artists will be required to supply and carry all of their provisions including food, art supplies, camping and cooking gear and clothes - Food caches along the route are available if delivery is arranged prior to May flights to the area - This residency occurs is black bear and grizzly country. Artists will be required to participate in a bear safety orientation and maybe required to alter their travel route if deemed necessary for safety reasons by Parks Canada and USNPS - It is strongly recommended that artists bring a support person to help with carrying supplies and to enhance safety while travelling and camping in bear country - Artists will receive a $3000 CAD honorarium from the Yukon Arts Centre - Three artists will be selected each year by Jury with one regional artist spot from the Yukon or Alaska. Duration of residency Most artists find the residency is a 14-day commitment including their travel time to and from the trail. Accommodation Artists pack their own tents and camping equipment. Foto: MGKSiegen / Pawel Gardynik Im kommenden Jahr vergibt die Stadt Siegen zum 15. Mal den Rubenspreis. Die mit 25.000 Euro dotierte Auszeichnung geht 2027 an den polnischen Maler und Solitude-Alumnus Wilhelm Sasnal. Sasnal gehört zur ersten Generation des Solitude Exchange Networks (vormals Osteuropa-Netzwerk), das 2002 ins Leben gerufen wurde. Das Solitude Exchange Network ist ein internationales Austauschprogramm für Künstler*innenresidenzen zwischen der Akademie Schloss Solitude und Partnerorganisationen in verschiedenen Mittel- und Südosteuropäischen Ländern wie Polen, Bulgarien, Kroatien, Rumänien, Serbien und Ungarn. Wilhelm Sasnal kam im April 2002 über die Kooperation mit dem Zentrum für zeitgenössische Kunst Schloss Ujazdowski in Warschau/Polen für einen dreimonatigen Aufenthalt an die Akademie. Der 1972 in Tarnów/Polen, geborene Künstler arbeitet als Maler, Filmemacher, Fotograf und Comiczeichner. Er studierte Architektur an der Technischen Universität Krakau/Polen und Malerei an der Akademie der Bildenden Künste Krakau. Seit den 1990er Jahren wird sein Werk in zahlreichen internationalen Ausstellungen gezeigt, zuletzt 2026 im Espaces Louis Vuitton in München. In seiner Arbeit greift er immer wieder auf Motive der Kunstgeschichte, Medienbilder und eigene Fotografien zurück. Jüngst basierten seine Gemälde auf aktuellen Aufnahmen aus dem zerstörten Gazastreifen und iranischen Atomanlagen. Die Jury des Rubenspreises lobte seine Malerei als ein »ausdrucksstarkes Kaleidoskop der Gegenwart«, das durch die Verschränkung von privaten, politischen und geschichtlichen Beobachtungen die zeitgenössische Malerei bereichere. Mit der Auszeichnung ist auch eine Publikation wie eine Ausstellung im Museum für Gegenwartskunst Siegen verbunden. Die Preisverleihung wird voraussichtlich im November 2027 stattfinden.
