Now in its second edition, the 2026 Weekender is a programme of exhibitions and events showcasing the diversity of new art made in the borough. This year, we are looking for work responding to the theme of the Social – artists can interpret this as interactions with their circle of friends, family and communities, or leaning towards social commentary or socially engaged practices. The selected works will be exhibited on 3 and 4 October. There will also be an accompanying programme of public events. Often, the quietest hours of the night are when we face these feelings most deeply. We invite artists to share photographic work captured in the twilight, under artificial streetlights, or in the deep dark that speaks to these personal moments. Clotilda Memorial The Alabama Historical Commission is seeking qualifications for an artist commission that will honor the last known African captives trafficked to the United States through the transatlantic slave trade: the 110 individuals forced aboard the _Clotilda_, the last US slave ship. The memorial will pay homage to the lives lost during the _Clotilda_’s illegal slaving voyage of 1860, while also conveying dimensions of the survivors’ lives and enduring legacies. The memorial will celebrate the resilient and determined spirits of the _Clotilda_ survivors amidst violent dislocation, enslavement, and discrimination, emphasizing their pride in their West African identities, values, and cultures, along with the families, institutions, and communities they created. It will preserve collective memory, honor heritage, and offer public space for healing. The body is no longer where the self ends; instead, the self is projected, fragmented, and reconstructed through screens, data, and code. We seek artworks that critically engage with how identity, memory, and intimacy are translated into digital environments. How do we inhabit the screen? How does the post‑digital landscape reshape our physical and psychological sensitivity? Call for Autumn Retreat 2026 – ARiR Guiniguada, Gran Canaria Deadline: 10 Aug 2026 Country: Spain Artist and Researcher in Residence programme, runs since 2019 in the Guiniguada valley of Gran Canaria, in the northern foothills, a long inhabited fertile area, not the touristic south. Separate studios, several terraces, shared kitchen and bathrooms. The house is our home, where we welcome you, we are present during the programme and support your projects. We are on an experimental life project trying to be less a consumer and work together with nature to a desired extent. Natural setting of the warm-loving forest zone, also ongoing agricultural activity. Rural as being part of a village, but very close to the capital city of Las Palmas or the town of Santa Brígida, thus well connected also via roads and public transport. Duration of residency Preferably 4 weeks (whole period). Minimum stay 2 weeks. Accommodation The house is an ‘organic’ type – this means by local standards it had been used first as a series of caves, since unkown times, and the previous owners enlarged it step by step in the directions where the rocky hillside has permitted. The residency area starts above our apartment; consisting of five rooms. Each room is separate, they do not open from each other. A shared kitchen and various terraces are at your disposal, and there are two shared bathrooms. Spring Art Residency on the Argentine Coast Deadline: 10 Aug 2026 Country: Argentina The program seeks to foster and support artistic research and practices that connect sensory production with critical thought, and that are capable of bringing their questions and imaginaries into dialogue. The residency is conceived as a space for experimenting with other ways of becoming together among living beings, in conversation with the territory, its materialities, and the human and more-than-human worlds that inhabit it, as a micropolitics of resistance. The residency will last a total of 15 days. Participants will be provided with shared mixed-gender accommodation, meals, workspaces, and a program of activities including guided field visits led by specialists, as well as other activities and practices specifically designed to support the development of participants’ projects. Weather permitting, the residency will also include an overnight field trip to the Dr. Eduardo P. Tonni Centinela del Mar Scientific Station, organized in collaboration with the Azara Foundation, where participants will engage in fieldwork. Duration of residency The residency program has a duration of 15 days. Accommodation La Zona’s house and studio are located in a forest area of El Marquesado, approximately 40 km from the center of Mar del Plata. The residency accommodates up to three artists in shared mixed-gender bedrooms with shared bathroom facilities, a fully equipped kitchen, and multiple indoor and outdoor workspaces. The main house includes a studio, a library, and a reading room on the ground floor. Adjacent to the house is a workshop that serves as both a workspace and a multipurpose area. While each resident develops their own project, we encourage collective moments of exchange as a way of fostering connections between participants and their practices. Cooking, cleaning, and the general upkeep of the space are shared responsibilities among residents and organizers. These everyday tasks are also understood as opportunities for social exchange and for experimenting with other ways of organizing life in common. The residency does not provide Wi-Fi. What initially began as a limitation due to poor connectivity has become a deliberate choice. We invite residents to spend these 15 days open to other forms of connection through embodied presence. However, should a resident require internet access, the nearby city of Miramar offers numerous cafés with Wi-Fi. Disciplines, work equipment and assistance This is a multidisciplinary residency program open to national and international artists from all disciplines, as well as creative practitioners, musicians, writers, curators, researchers, and scientists. Residents are encouraged to challenge their usual practices and to develop projects or research in an environment removed from urban centers and in close dialogue with the forces of the surrounding landscape. Proposals that demonstrate a critical perspective, an experimental approach, and a willingness to engage with the territory and its surrounding community will be especially valued. La Zona provides curatorial, contextual, and logistical support throughout the residency, culminating in an open studio, process presentation, or public conversation with the local community at the end of the program.Studio / Workspace A 60 m² workspace for a wide range of uses, including studio-based and performance practices. The space is equipped with a traditional clay stove that provides heating during the winter months. The upper floor includes an additional bedroom, as well as a bathroom and kitchen. 5th Edition Micro-Residency A Isla R.A.R.O. Bogotá Deadline: 10 Aug 2026 Country: Colombia At R.A.R.O., we constantly question the role of the artist residency and its multiple formats. Our usual model promotes connection with other artists and itinerancy within the broad art ecosystem in Buenos Aires (ARG) and Bogotá (COL). However, we also recognize that a fundamental part of the creative experience emerges when we isolate ourselves and make space for silence and reflection. This parallel format, developed under the name A-ISLA, consists of a brief 5-day experience during which we choose to step away from the city. The first three editions of the program took place in the Tigre Delta, on the outskirts of Buenos Aires—a unique ecosystem in that region, accessible by a boat ride of over two hours across the Paraná River. This time, with the support of the Department of Art at Universidad de los Andes, we are proposing a fifth edition of the program at Hacienda Las Mesitas de Santa Inés, located in the township of Cachipay, in the department of Cundinamarca, central Colombia. Cachipay is approximately 60 km southwest of Bogotá. It is a small rural township with an agricultural and traditional character, surrounded by mountain landscapes, crops, and natural areas typical of the Andean region. It is located about two hours from Bogotá. Duration of residency Residency duration: 5 days Date: September 4–8, 2026 Location: Hacienda Las Mesitas de Santa Inés Accommodation Accommodation is included at the hacienda where the residency will take place. Disciplines, work equipment and assistance All artistic disciplines are welcome in our residency.Fees and support The residency fee is: ● 470 USD for Colombian residents, former residents, or members of the R.A.R.O. atelier network in both Bogotá and Buenos Aires. ● 550 USD for Latin American artists. ● 600 USD for artists from North America, Europe, Asia, and Oceania. Mosesian Arts is located six miles from downtown Boston, borders the Charles River and Brighton, and is easily accessible from surrounding suburbs and Metro West. Programs include professional theater and musical performances, gallery exhibitions, literary and art discussions, and performing and visual arts classes and workshops for all ages. Eligibility: Artists located in the U.S.A are welcomed to apply. Local artists will be provided with drop-off times and date details upon acceptance. Non-local selected artists’ work must be received at the Mosesian Center for the Arts, 321 Arsenal Street, Watertown, MA 02472 c/o exhibitions by September 4, 2026. Non-local artists are responsible for shipping costs both to and from the MCA, unless other arrangements are made, and are responsible for insuring their work while in transit. If shipping works, each artist must provide a pre-paid, UPS or FedEx return shipping label including insurance. Please pack your work in sturdy reusable packaging. The Mosesian Center for the Arts carries appropriate insurance to cover all artwork in the show for the duration of the exhibition, including the time frame of drop-off, installation, de-installation and pick-up. Additional guidelines: - Any work accepted for exhibition may not be removed or exchanged during the duration of the exhibition. - Work must be framed and ready to hang with wires and screws. Saw tooth hangers and sandwich frames may not be used. - Works on paper and smearable mediums such as charcoal and pastels must be protected under glass or acrylic. - For framed artwork larger than 24” on the longest side, glass may not be used. Instead, artists must use Plexiglas or comparable acrylic glass. - If used, mats must be white, off white, gray, or other neutral tones. Frames should be neutral colors (white, black, silver, wood). - Unframed stretched canvases must have the sides painted or otherwise finished to be integral to the work and must be dry. Submission Fee: $15 per submission. Limit 5 submissions per artist. Commission Structure: Artists receive 60% commission, and the Mosesian Center for the Arts receives 40% for art sold during the exhibition. The Promise of the Creatures II. Thinking Ourselves as Birds. Artistic and Zoological Practices for Other Versions of the World Deadline: 10 Aug 2026 Country: Argentina Coordinator: Celeste Medrano Bipedal locomotion, a presumably biological arrangement, brought with it a series of political consequences that, among certain human collectives, meant an overt opening toward all kinds of binary thinking. Thus, far from the ground, we found ourselves in the midst of a taxonomic whim. However, playing the exceptionalism card did not make us “win the game,” as we had imagined. Today we must think of ourselves amid all kinds of catastrophes: anthropocenic, denialist, libertarian, etc. But: how can we engage in an exercise that moves away from the simplifications proposed by Modernity? What paths can we take toward more-than-human futures? Perhaps here we can conjure a promise: that of the critters. In this re(in)sidency, the second version of an essay we began in 2025, we slip into the world of birds as a multispecies pretext. We imagine the gathering as an act of resistance to the progress of a technocratic and libertarian linear time; we imagine it chiefly inhabited by legs and beaks, by the feathers of male birds, female birds, and aviaries. We imagine it relapsing into critterhood, insisting. Flying over the coastal grasslands of Buenos Aires Province, dragging ourselves through the forest that surrounds them. For all this, it is necessary to learn certain techniques—perhaps the biological ones, those of naturalists and ornithologists—in pursuit of other possible stories. We will then meet on October 10, in the territory of the Zone (El Marquesado) at 9:00 a.m., and the residency will conclude on October 13 at 10:00 a.m. In total, there will be 3 nights and 3 days in person. If anyone needs to finish late on October 12 in order to travel overnight, that is also possible. The in-person schedule indicates the approximate start and end times of activities, but it is possible to arrive earlier or stay longer depending on transportation availability. Accommodation The space is shared with other people in a relaxed and informal environment. A collaborative and respectful attitude is expected for kitchen tasks, maintenance of the space, and management of the common area. Disciplines, work equipment and assistance The open call is aimed at artists from all disciplines, educator*s, thinker*s, and people interested in exploring the discourses through which other more-than-human beings speak to us. Objectives: - Train ourselves-with the birds, the female birds and the bird-beings, in their dissidence. - Devote ourselves exhaustively to ‘paying attention’. - Unfold nesting exercises. - Transform the invisible (traces, signs, marks) into presences. - Acquire birding techniques. - Scale the gaze, the body. - Think of ourselves as multispecies and all possible beings.Fees and support The value for this activity is 400,000 Argentine pesos for residents of Argentina and 400 US dollars for residents of other countries. The two virtual meetings and the three nights of accommodation in mixed, shared rooms are included. Two virtual meetings prior to the residency. Work materials, food covering four daily meals, and transportation from the Miramar bus terminal to La Zona, round trip. It does not include long-distance transportation costs, medical insurance, or beverages of any kind. We have two half-scholarships available for those who request them.
