Every Sunday, a new essay and creative practice will drop for members. These essays and prompts are designed to strengthen and sustain an artistic practice over the course of a year. Each week’s practice explores one aspect of making through observation, experimentation, reflection, and return. You’ll find each new installment in our weekly newsletter and in the Your Artist Practice Notebook collection on Patreon, making it easy to return to previous weeks whenever you like. Whether you’ve been part of the Contemporary Performance community for years or you’ve just joined us, I’m glad you’re here. I hope this series becomes part of your weekly rhythm and a place you return to throughout your artistic life. Artists spend a great deal of time making work, applying for opportunities, producing projects, collaborating with others, and responding to deadlines. Those activities are important, but they can also pull us away from the quieter work that sustains an artistic life. Practice is where we return to our questions. It’s where we notice patterns, develop habits, and create the conditions for ideas to emerge. This series grew out of my teaching and my own studio practice. Over the years I’ve watched artists struggle with the same question: How do I keep making work between projects? Not every week leads to a performance, an exhibition, or a publication, but every week offers an opportunity to deepen your relationship with your practice. That’s what this series is for. Over the next year, you’ll receive a new post every Sunday. Each one builds on a corresponding week and offers a few minutes to pause before beginning the week’s exercise. These essays are conversations with fellow artists. Read one with a cup of coffee, on the train, or whenever you find a quiet moment, then return to your notebook and spend time with the practice itself. Each essay takes a few minutes to read. The creative practice unfolds over the course of the week. Some exercises take ten minutes. Others stay with you for several days as you observe, reflect, and return to them. Work at your own pace. Return when you can. Over time, the small moments of attention accumulate into a deeper relationship with your practice. This week we begin with Week 1: Locate & Listen–> What is an Artist Practice Notebook and How Do I Use It? There is no right way to use an artist’s notebook. You don’t need a dedicated studio. You don’t need expensive materials. You don’t even need to begin at the beginning, although I encourage you to do so the first time through. You will need a notebook or a sketchbook, a spiral notebook, a composition book, or a digital notes app if that’s how you naturally work. Date every entry, even if it’s only a few sentences. Over time, you’ll begin to see patterns that would otherwise disappear. Try to complete one practice each week before moving to the next. If life interrupts, don’t worry. Return when you can (aka backfill your notebook). Move through the notebook at your own pace. It is a framework you can return to throughout your artistic life. Some weeks you’ll write. Others you’ll draw, walk, observe, read, collaborate, or simply pay closer attention. Some practices will resonate immediately. Others may not make sense until months later. That is part of the process. Trust your own pace. Don’t worry about making beautiful notebook pages. Let them become working documents. Cross things out. Add photographs, ticket stubs, sketches, rehearsal notes, quotes, diagrams, or questions. Your notebook is not a finished artwork. It is an archive of your thinking. Most importantly, keep returning. A creative practice is built through repetition, attention, and curiosity rather than dramatic moments of inspiration. Tsai substitutes the title’s idealized skybox and portions of its street-court architecture with fragments drawn from present-day war imagery, shifting the visual background from atmospheric décorto historical wound. For the artist, whose childhood memory of NBA LIVE 2005 is bound to its American courts and synthetic skies, the piece revisits a moment when Western popular culture seemed to promise mobility, openness, and a forward-looking horizon. Two decades later, that horizon reappears contaminated by the image-streams of conflict circulating across social media. The work binds private memory to software archaeology and geopolitical rupture, converting a sports simulation into a terse meditation on broken futurity and the afterlife of digital images. As an art mod, the project further reflects on the encounter between contemporary AI systems and obsolete modding technologies. Operating upon a legacy video game as a digital archive, Yesterday’s Skybox foregrounds the productive friction between different technological epochs, revealing modding itself as a site where historical software infrastructures, machine-generated imagery, and artistic research become entangled. Rhett Tsai (蔡宇潇) is an artist, researcher, educator, and experimental game developer based in Hangzhou, China. His practice moves across interactive media, game engines, experimental video games, video, sound, and field-based research, with a sustained concern for the social, cultural, and technological conditions that organise media life. Drawing on China’s networked environment while engaging questions of cultural identity, alienation, wandering, and historical displacement, he has increasingly used games to think through diaspora and fractured memory. Tsai teaches in the Open Media Department at the School of Intermedia Art, China Academy of Art. His works have appeared or are forthcoming internationally at venues and festivals including Ars Electronica Festival, Gwanju Biennale, CURRENTS New Media, Milan Machinima Festival, Sónar Barcelona, Electric Literature Organization Conference and Media Arts Festival, Loop Lab Busan, the National Art Museum of China, the Macau Museum of Art, and more. His distinctions include the 2023 HUA Award from the Lumen Prize, a 2023 Independent Games Festival finalist position in Excellence in Visual Art for How Deep Is the Dark Water?, etc. Recently, he completed his solo show Luring Bad at Watershed Art & Ecology in Chicago.

Runway – Angličtina pre kultúru a turizmus uzatvára po štyroch rokoch svoju cestu V júni 2026 sme ukončili štvrtý a zároveň posledný ročník vzdelávacieho programu Runway – Angličtina pre kultúru a turizmus. Projekt, ktorý sme odštartovali v roku 2022, vznikol ako súčasť vzdelávacích aktivít Trenčín 2026 s cieľom pripraviť ľudí pôsobiacich v kultúre a cestovnom ruchu na intenzívnejšiu medzinárodnú spoluprácu a príchod zahraničných návštevníkov. Počas štyroch rokov sa do kurzu zapojilo 111 účastníkov a účastníčok, ktorí pracujú v kultúrnych inštitúciách, cestovnom ruchu, kreatívnych odvetviach či službách. Výučba prebiehala v 40 jazykových skupinách, rozdelených podľa jazykovej úrovne, a spolu sa uskutočnilo viac ako 1 200 hodín výučby. „Keď sme s týmto kurzom začínali, bola to v mnohých ohľadoch nová oblasť aj pre nás. Angličtina pre kultúru, turizmus, projekty, návštevníkov, networking alebo prezentácie nie je niečo, na čo jednoducho otvoríte učebnicu a idete podľa kapitoly 7. A práve to nás na tom bavilo. Za tie roky sme školili viac ako 100 ľudí z Trenčína a okolia. Z praktických dôvodov som sa ocitla v skupine, ktorá sa stretávala každý piatok o siedmej ráno – a absolútne nikdy by som si nepomyslela, že sa budem tešiť na skoré piatkové vstávanie. Natália (lektorka) robila každú hodinu pútavou, zábavnou a svojou energiou i nadšením nás vždy spoľahlivo prebrala. Vďaka nej som bola zvedavá, aké nové videá nám ukáže, čo je nové u mojich spolužiakov a spolužiačok a aké zaujímavé témy nás čakajú. Hodiny neboli len o gramatike či slovíčkach – boli o rozhovoroch, diskusiách, kultúre a objavovaní nových pohľadov. Postupne sa zo spolužiakov stali priatelia, a práve vďaka tomu boli hodiny angličtiny ešte lepšie. Vďaka Eloque som získala nielen bohatšiu slovnú zásobu, ale aj nových priateľov a množstvo inšpirácií a informácií. The seminars will run weekly from 1 October until 10 December 2026. Now in its fifth year and joined by Scotland, ITER invites artists and organisations to develop explore ways of reducing their impact on the environment by rethinking their approach to touring through free online seminars, networking opportunities and project funding. ITER also fosters relationships between artists and companies, supporting them to develop new, environmentally responsible, inclusive and equitable approaches together to international touring and collaboration. The programme will be split into two offerings: - Pathfinders – an introduction to sustainable touring principles for beginners - Changemakers – a more advanced programme for those ready to lead on new models of change There are up to 60 places available across both the programmes. The programme is designed for venues, organisers, touring companies, and individuals from the performing arts sector including dance, music, theatre in England, Scotland, Norway and Denmark: - Music or theatre venues that receive touring organisations - Festivals - Orchestras - Theatre company - Solo artists, performers or musicians - Performing arts producers - Multidisciplinary arts organisations. SÍM Guesthouse Deadline: 31 Dec 2026 Country: Iceland Founded in 2002 by SÍM – The Association of Icelandic Visual Artists – in partnership with Reykjavík, SÍM Guesthouse aims to serve as a shelter in the Reykjavík center for visiting international and local artists, cultural workers, their accompanying partners, and family members. SÍM Guesthouse is an old, charming house conveniently located in the heart of Reykjavík. Residencies at SÍM Guesthouse are self directed and self funded, and are intended to acomodate artists for short stopovers, networking, collaborations and research. The Guesthouse is, however, not well equipped as a space for production. SÍM is a nonprofit organization. Therefore, the guesthouse fee only meets the general needs to maintain and administrate the guesthouse facilities. Duration of residency The rooms are rented from one night up to two weeks. A 10% discount is applied for bookings of one week or longer. Accommodation The guesthouse bedrooms are private, whilst the cosy living room, kitchen, and bathroom are shared with guests in the other three rooms. Room 1, 30 sqm – is two private rooms divided into a working and living room, with a private sink and bedroom. Rooms 2,3 and 4 are around 15sqm each. Each room is a private room with two single beds. The youngest of three children, he first attended St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School in Prenton and then St. Anselm’s College in Birkenhead, which was founded by the Christian Brothers.  After leaving school Paul worked in a variety of jobs including being a clerk in the Magistrates Courts and a care worker in a Children’s Convalescent Home in West Kirby. Crossover into mainstream Set against the turbulent social and political landscape of 1980s Britain, the exhibition charts the rise of Lily Savage within the context of Section 28 and widespread homophobia. Lily Savage emerged as a defiant response to the era’s unrest, channelling working-class resilience into high-glamour, razor-sharp satire. As we mark the 60th anniversary of the 1967 Sexual Offences Act, the exhibition places Paul O’Grady at the vanguard of LGBTQIA+ visibility. It maps the moment queer culture crossed over from the pub and club underground into the collective heart of the British public, forever altering the national cultural fabric. Lily’s television career included hosting “The Lily Savage Show” (BBC); “Lily Live” (ITV); and “Lily Savage’s Blankety Blank”. After resting Lily, Paul O’Grady’s career flourished in many directions from the BAFTA award-winning “The Paul O’Grady Show”, “Paul O’Grady: For the Love of Dogs” and “Paul O’Grady’s Little Heroes” to name but a few. He also had a definitive decade-long residency on BBC Radio 2, making him one of the most significant cultural figures of his generation. He has written four volumes of his autobiography and in 2017 “Paul O’Grady’s Country Life” was published. Paul’s children’s books about Eddie Albert focus on a boy who lives with his dad after his mum has died and who finds he has the ability to talk to animals. They are his friends and they have adventures together which include rescuing a baby orangutan from a cruel owner. Paul wanted his books to encourage children to be kind to animals as well as wanting to support children who are bullied in school or who feel they don’t fit in. Despite all his success which undoubtedly changed his life he remained passionate about speaking out when he considered people were being treated unjustly and in his TV series about the Working Class and “The Sally Army and Me” he wanted to highlight the day to day struggles of ordinary people and show the hard work that goes on often unnoticed by the powers that be. The Archive: Craft, Costume, and Character For the first time, the public is invited to engage with the meticulous craft behind the persona. The exhibition brings together a unique selection of items from Paul O’Grady’s archive: - Iconic Wardrobe: Original Lily Savage and pantomime costumes that defined an era of British drag. - Media: Rare footage, scripts, photography, and oral histories documenting LGBTQIA+ activism and working-class life and entertainment. - Private World: An intimate look at Paul’s personal eclectic collection of objects, figurines, and puppets, revealing the influences that shaped his creative psyche. Scouse Flowerhouse brings the Northern Flowerhouse Assembly to Lutyen’s Crypt this June News This June, Scouse Flowerhouse promise a seminal day in the building of the Northern Flowerhouse movement. The event, supported by the RHS, PlanIt, and the Eden Project, hosts horticulturalists, artists and scientists from across the North of England, features a host of expert panellists, including Great Dixter’s Fergus Garrett and the Singh Twins. The Northern Flowerhouse is a movement born from conversations, exchanges, visits, goodwill and, above all, from collective action. Originally born from a meeting in Everton, reflecting on the team’s collective experience of the Grow Wild England Flagship wildflower programme with Hulme, the concept of wildflowers as essential infrastructure, requiring serious investment and care has spread. In Liverpool, schools and community groups of all sizes have joined in sowing events, workshops, celebratory events and harvests. Influenced by all of that, Scouse Flowerhouse believe that Beauty is a Birthright. As Jamie Reid wrote, “subscribe to working with our hands, minds and hearts in equal measure”. Scouse Flowerhouse members has connected with like-minded groups across the North and beyond to bring this major botanical and cultural event to Liverpool this summer. Amongst the presenters are Talking Plants, a group of Sheffield gardeners who come together regularly to share and promote their love of plants; Manchester Green Infrastructure Network, Groundwork, Kendal’s Nature Recovery Network, gardeners, artists and ecologists. Plus, people passionate about their local neighbourhoods like GalGael in Govan and Aproxima Arts in Glasgow. The Northern Flowerhouse is not about one size fits all, it is about creating connections and a magnetism to invite curious folk to assist in restoring wildflower habitats across our cities and edgelands. It’s not difficult work, but it does require powers of observation and a sensibility to nurture rather than tame our wild habitats. Nature does a lot of the work in producing the seed and creating the beauty, given the right starting points and substrates, most often readily available close to home. Fergus Garrett, a Patron of Scouse Flowerhouse, will share his generous insights into what makes a garden, and the Singh Twins will speak about how their artworks depicting flowers and nature in symbolic, political and personal ways. Audiences will hear from inspirational work in cities across Northern Europe: Nantes, Sheffield, Doncaster and Manchester, and Alistair McIntosh will close the day talking about the possibilities of land reform from a Scottish perspective. So this Assembly is about growing our movement and sharing ideas and practice to make our green spaces, parks and gardens more beautiful and better interconnected. The invitation to audiences is to actively help to weave a web of biodiversity across the North with the grit, spirit, ambition and humour, which Northern communities are so well-known for. If we are to reverse biodiversity loss, we need to act boldly and collectively. On 19th June the action and workshops of the events at the cathedral will be continued at St Vincent’s School, and audiences are welcome to stay for a community build over the weekend with more details to be shared with ticket holders shortly. The Crossing The Path of Water Dance, Walking & Embodied Nature Aug 6, 2026 | Workshops The Crossing is a three-day dance and walking laboratory that follows La Palma’s northern route through one of the world’s most extraordinary natural landscapes. Designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, this route unfolds through a remarkable landscape of ancient laurel and pine forests, culminating at the spring with the highest water flow in the Canary Islands. Where: La Palma, Canary Islands. Wilderness laboratory When: October 31 – November 2, 2026 Deadline for applications: till complete, 5 places available, Walking becomes the first choreographic gesture from which movement, perception, and community emerge. Through dance, meditation, and embodied exploration, we cultivate an intuitive dialogue with nature, allowing the landscape to shape perception, creativity, and presence. As we journey across the island, its ecological, historical, and cultural layers become the material for artistic research and personal transformation. The path invites us to slow down, empty ourselves of habitual patterns, and rediscover the body through listening, movement, and shared experience. Rather than moving through nature, we allow nature to move through us. The landscape becomes both studio and teacher, dissolving the boundaries between body and environment, individual and collective, observation and participation. Daily sessions will combine dynamic meditation, Authentic Movement, Body Weather, walking, improvisation, sonic experimentation, writing, and drawing. In an age of ecological crisis, violence, and relentless acceleration, The Crossing invites us to reclaim our place within the living world. Through dance, walking, and embodied practice, we reconnect with nature, strengthen community, and cultivate mutual care. More than a journey across an island, it reminds us that we are not separate from the landscapes we inhabit—we are part of them. Šapitó, ktoré spája ľudí. Na festivale Za stolom vytvorí priestor pre spoločné zážitky Šapito je dočasná inštalácia zastrešujúca spoločné stolovanie pre festival Za stolom v rámci projektu Mesto pretvorené. Pivné sety v novom šate, rozložené po námestí pri ODA, spája šapito, ktoré kontúrami svetelných reťazí pomyslene spája programy festivalu pod jednu strechu. Dielo tvorí 40 modifikovaných stolov a 80 lavíc s kapacitou približne 250 ľudí. Síce pivné sety sú samy o sebe iba jednoduchým sedením vo vkusnom prevedení spoločne s svetelnou inštaláciou však vytvárajú prelud architektúry impozantnej mierky. Dielo má v sebe aj komunitný rozmer, nakoľko po festivale budú časti inštalácie k dispozícii na zapožičanie pre rôzne komunity, kde budú naďalej kolovať a opakovane sa používať pri ďalších mestských podujatiach. Pôvodnú typológiu pivného setu mení farebná a materiálová intervencia. Striedanie morených drevených lát vytvára výrazný pruhovaný raster inšpirovaný farebnými parkovými lavičkami. Modrá farba tvorí odkaz na Európske hlavné mesto kultúry Trenčín2026. Masívne smrekovcové drevo prináša do dočasnej eventovej infraštruktúry prirodzenú kresbu, haptickosť a príjemný kontakt. Odolná povrchová úprava podporuje dlhodobé používanie v exteriéri bez potlačenia charakteru materiálu. Hlavným priestorovým gestom je kruh. Reťaz stolov pretína a súčasne zabýva rozdielne časti námestia: trávnatú plochu, pravidelný raster stromov, mlatovú piazzettu aj spevnené komunikačné plochy. Namiesto vytvorenia samostatného ostrova reaguje na existujúcu štruktúru priestoru a spája jeho fragmenty do jedného spoločného celku. Ako náhrdelník tak spája nielen priestor, ale aj dianie v ňom. Zostava môže fungovať ako súvislý kruh alebo ako voľnejšia radiálna konfigurácia. Medzery medzi jednotlivými segmentmi zachovávajú priechodnosť námestia, umožňujú meniť hustotu sedenia a prirodzene reagovať na stromy, existujúce stĺpy a pohyb návštevníkov. Systém sa dá voľne interpretovať podľa potrieb. Horizontálnu líniu stola dopĺňa vertikálna svetelná konštrukcia. Zo stredu priestoru sa rozbiehajú svetelné girlandy, ktoré nad korunami stromov vytvárajú abstraktný obrys šapita. Tento prvok nie je iba vizuálnym znakom. Po zotmení vymedzuje spoločný interiér pod otvoreným nebom, zjednocuje rozptýlené časti zostavy a poskytuje orientačný bod celého námestia. Stôl sa tak mení z mobiliára na architektúru a z funkčného vybavenia na nositeľa identity podujatia. Dielo dopĺňa verejný priestor s výrazným priestorovým gestom. Je produktom, mobiliárom, svetelným objektom. Jeho architektúra nevzniká pridaním uzavretej stavby, ale organizovaním vzťahov medzi ľuďmi, existujúcou krajinou námestia a spoločným dianím.
