The library centers overlooked Black archives, travelling globally to grow through community contributions. The archive is intentionally broad, accepting any media preserving Black histories, cultures, and memories. Everyone is welcome to contribute and build this living collection. 2027 Residency Application Deadline: 19 Aug 2026 Country: United States Vashon Artist Residency supports artists by offering time, space and resources to reflect, create and connect. Located on Vashon Island, in the heart of the Salish Sea, Vashon Artist Residency offers a peaceful waterfront retreat with comfortable, thoughtfully designed living and working spaces for visual, literary, performing, media and interdisciplinary artists. Founded by visual artist Cathy Sarkowsky in 2021, this intimate residency was created from her desire to support artists in developing new work by offering a space that nurtures exploration—of practices, relationships and the opportunity to recharge physically, spiritually, and creatively. Each year, we host more than 70 artists in small cohorts throughout the year, with 2 and 4 week sessions. To support accessibility, artists are invited to pay on a self-determined sliding scale, based on their individual financial circumstances. Artists of all backgrounds, identities and disciplines, including those of diverse races, gender identities, sexual orientations and geographic origins, are welcome at Vashon Artist Residency. Duration of residency 2 and 4 week sessions Accommodation Vashon Artist Residency welcomes up to seven artists for each residency session. Accommodations include a private bedroom, a private or shared bathroom, a communal kitchen for meals and indoor and outdoor areas for dining and relaxing. Each resident will have 24 hour access to a private studio or writer’s desk with WiFi. Residents are responsible for the cost of their own travel, supplies and food. Writers are assigned to our largest bedrooms, each furnished with a spacious writing desk, and can also take advantage of several additional writing spaces located throughout the campus.Fees and support To ensure accessibility for artists across a range of income levels, Vashon Artist Residency uses a sliding-scale fee structure. Fall 2026 Artist Residency in a medieval water mill Deadline: 20 Aug 2026 Country: France Our residency is designed for artists seeking focus, solitude, and deep immersion in their practice. We intentionally host only 1 to 3 artists at a time, creating a calm and uncluttered environment where each resident can fully engage with their work without distraction. Unlike more communal programs, we do not organize shared dinners or group activities. Solitude is a key element of our philosophy. Each artist lives and works independently, while still having access to shared creative spaces if and when they choose. Each resident is accommodated in a private, fully equipped 120 m² duplex apartment, offering both comfort and autonomy throughout their stay. Artists also enjoy free and unlimited access to our two studios, which are the only shared spaces on site and can be used flexibly according to individual working rhythms. We are located in a small village in the South-West of France, in the Périgord Noir region, an area renowned for its extraordinary historical richness. Often referred to as one of the “cradles of humanity,” this region has been continuously inhabited since prehistoric times and is filled with caves, medieval villages, and remarkable heritage sites. The residency takes place in a restored 11th-century water mill, surrounded by nature, offering a peaceful and inspiring setting. At the same time, the village center with shops and everyday amenities is just a 10-minute walk away, allowing for both retreat and convenience. We provide bicycles to help residents move around locally. However, we recommend arriving by car, as the region is full of stunning landscapes and cultural sites that are more easily accessible with one. We are a fully independent, artist-run residency, and we strive to keep our fees as accessible as possible. As artists ourselves, we understand how essential it is to have opportunities to experience new environments, cultures, and perspectives in order to nourish and expand one’s creative practice. Our facilities are also well suited for textile artists, with access to two horizontal looms and two vertical looms, allowing for various weaving practices. For sculptors, we offer a dedicated studio equipped with a broad selection of machines and tools, supporting different approaches and materials. In addition, our peaceful setting is particularly conducive to writing and research-based practices. Each resident’s private duplex apartment provides ample space to set up a personal workstation and work in complete privacy. While we offer well-equipped studios and comfortable living spaces, our residency emphasizes autonomy: artists are free to organize their time and process independently within an environment designed to support focus and creativity. Here you are in the heart of Italy, between Umbria, Tuscany, Lake Bolsena and the Tyrrhenian Sea. Inhabited, according to tradition, by the ancient Etruscan populations called the ‘Tusci’. Their refined civilisation is testified by precious archaeological finds and extensive necropolises. Sorano and Pitigliano are close by: two villages in the south of Tuscany, in the heart of the ‘Tuscan Maremma’, beautifully carved into the local tuff stone. We are inviting artists for a 2 to 4 weeks residency. Latera: The Etruscan history of this region and the setting in the medieval village, surrounded by chestnut woods, the Lake Bolsena, and by a multitude of interesting sites, villages and towns, both in the Tuscia Viterbese area and in (Southern) Tuscany and Umbria, makes this area in our eyes a unique and conducive place for creatives to spend time, explore interesting sites and to create. The residency -a 2-floor house- offers comfortable accommodation for 1 artist/couple/2 artist-friends (2 beds available). Painters, writers, photographers, designers, illustrators, musicians and researchers are all welcome. The workspace is in-house and is suitable for working at small to medium sized works. The program is set by the applicant. At the end of a stay of 3 or 4 weeks, it is possible to have an exhibition in the local museum ‘Museo della Terra Latera’, or in a former small church. The village can be reached by public transport, however, residents are highly recommended to come with own (rented) transport, as public transport in this area is very limited and will not bring you to the most interesting sites. Duration of residency 2-4 weeks Accommodation Residents live independently in a self-contained 2-level apartment, in the center of a typical Italian ‘borgo’ (small village). The apartment comprises a living room, kitchen, and workspace on the ground floor. A bedroom and bathroom are on the first floor. An extra (double) bed is available on this floor. Our goal is to facilitate deep concentration, artistic development, and production. The core conditions of the residency are silence, immersion, and a secluded environment in nature. We offer both private and shared studios, and the residency has been active since 2014. Duration of residency The duration of the residency varies from a minimum of 2 weeks up to 3 months, depending on the artist’s needs and the scope of the project. Applicants can specify their preferred time period in their application. Accommodation Artists stay in private rooms right next to the studio during their residency, and the kitchen and bathroom are shared with other guests. Since the house is not well-insulated for sound, guests are encouraged to show mutual consideration in the residential parts of the shared areas Disciplines, work equipment and assistance We welcome most creative disciplines, providing great working conditions for visual arts, writers, and digital sound creators. Call for German, Czech or Polish artists Post date 19/08/2026 Group Exhibition at the Kunsthalle Görlitz, Granite & Gravity (working title) explores connections between the deep bedrock beneath the Germany-Czech Republic-Poland border triangle and the universe – between below and above. In the future, gravitational waves – tiny distortions of spacetime that can be detected using highly sensitive detectors and provide insights into the most distant events in the cosmos – are to be measured within the region’s massive granite massif. The exceptional geological stability and seismic tranquility of the Lusatian granite create ideal conditions for this. Between the rock beneath our feet and the most distant regions of the universe, a fascinating space for artistic exploration opens up. Starting Point One starting point for the exhibition is a profound transformation taking place in the region. As part of the structural change following the phase-out of lignite mining, the German Center for Astrophysics (Deutsches Zentrum für Asrtophysic – DZA) is being established in Lusatia. New research infrastructures for astrophysics are being developed here, including the Low Seismic Lab, which is to be built approximately 200 meters deep within the Lusatian granite massif. The rock’s exceptional seismic stillness creates ideal conditions for high-precision measurements and the development of the next generation of gravitational wave detectors. At the Görlitz Research Campus, astronomical observational data will be analyzed, simulations developed, and methods of high-performance computing and artificial intelligence applied. The focus is on questions regarding the origin and evolution of the universe, the measurement of gravitational waves, and the analysis and interpretation of complex astronomical data. At the same time, scientific developments in the region open up new perspectives that can be explored artistically in a variety of ways. The focus here is not solely on astrophysical phenomena, but also on questions regarding the relationship between landscape and the universe, between geological depth and cosmic distance, between materiality and data, and between technical measurement and human perception. Likewise, ideas about the origin of the world, time and the future, visibility and invisibility, scientific and social transformations, or pop- cultural, philosophical, and science-fiction narratives about Earth and the cosmos can serve as starting points for artistic works. The group exhibition brings together distinct artistic positions, thereby opening up diverse perspectives on the exhibition’s theme. Participation The open call is open to professional artists working in all disciplines of contemporary art who live or work primarily in Germany, Poland, or the Czech Republic. Individual artists and collectives are equally welcome. We are seeking artistic projects in all media – including drawing, photography, sculpture, installation, video, sound, performance, painting, as well as cross-media and experimental formats. The decisive factors are artistic quality and relevance to the exhibition’s thematic framework. We welcome existing works, concepts for new works to be created in time for the exhibition, as well as site-specific projects developed in Görlitz and/or in collaboration with the German Center for Astrophysics (DZA) We are happy to assist artists who wish to incorporate the DZA’s scientific context more deeply into their work by connecting them with researchers. Depending on the project, we can facilitate access to insights into research processes, discussions with scientists, and selected materials and datasets—such as seismic measurements, sound recordings, or visualizations. The scope and form of the collaboration will be determined on a case-by-case basis based on the respective artistic questions and the DZA’s capabilities. Collaboration with the DZA is expressly an offer and not a prerequisite for applying. General Conditions The selection of artistic contributions and the curatorial organization of the group exhibition will be carried out by the team at the Kunsthalle Görlitz. Aviário Studio Multidisciplinary Residency Winter/Spring 2026-27 Deadline: 20 Aug 2026 Country: Portugal An art residency provides the technical conditions, time, and space to develop ideas and try new approaches. It is a moment that promotes connection between artists from different backgrounds and consequently the exchange of knowledge and experiences. Aviário Studio Art Residency aims to promote exploration and production in the Visual Arts. Artists can develop projects using a medium or a combination of technologies. Aviário Studio is an artist-run space with workshops equipped to develop projects on Printmaking, Ceramics, Wood, Metal, Sculpture, Installation, Drawing, Painting, Photography and Bookbinding. The program is customized according to the participating artist’s goals regarding duration, outcome and focus. We offer the conditions to test possibilities and materialize ideas. On one hand, it can be a moment of transition, more connected to experimentation and research; on the other hand, it can be the point of consolidation of a project translated into the production of a new body of work. Duration of residency The duration of the residency can be 2 weeks up till 6 months.
