From Canvas to Wall: An International 2 weeks Mural Masterclass (All levels) Deadline: 30 Aug 2026 Country: Portugal Join StartArt Residency in Northern Portugal for a practical mural masterclass led by Ale Poiré, a Mexican painter with more than a decade of experience creating public art across Mexico, Latin America, and Europe. Ale’s work explores gender, identity, collective memory, and the social meaning of public space. Her practice is grounded in the belief that a mural begins long before the first brushstroke. Through a methodology that combines observation, listening, visual research, and painting, participants will learn to develop mural projects that are not only visually compelling, but also deeply connected to the places and communities they engage with. Throughout the program, participants will develop a creative process that can be applied to future mural projects in any context. They will explore how to observe with intention, transform ideas into visual narratives, build strong mural concepts, create sketches, choose colours, transfer a design, and execute a large-scale artwork with confidence and purpose. Surrounded by forests and the Homem River, the residency offers a unique environment to slow down and sharpen observation. Guided walks, perception exercises, and a personal visual journal will encourage participants to develop a more attentive way of looking—one that can later be carried into any community, landscape, or public space where they choose to create. Ale is also co-founder of Sociedad de Pintoras, a women’s mural collective based in Guadalajara that works to increase the visibility of women in public art. No previous mural experience is required. Languages, Please | UNIDEE Residency Modules, Fall Seasons 2026 Deadline: 30 Aug 2026 Country: Italy UNIDEE Residency Programs and Fondazione Pistoletto Cittadellarte are pleased to announce the open call for applications for the final modules of Languages, Please, which will conclude the research arc developed by UNIDEE Visiting Curators Nina Fiocco and Gaia Martino. Languages, Please is an invitation to a collective series of rehearsals that explores languages as geopolitical spaces of dispute, narratives, and encounters. It is a call to engage with the porosity of our bodies in action and the narratives that can infuse and strengthen our practice of remaining polyphonic, amid the crumbling circumstances of the present. To meet in a language embraces the paradox of feeling foreign but inside the language, consciously rejecting to be bound by borders and rules that the language itself may impose. The fragility and fleeting temporality of this process embody the very essence of the community as a political space: a plurality of possibilities forged by the acceptance of implicit differences and affective responses that sharing a language fosters in each of us. What is incomprehensible yet invisible—uncoded, unseen and unheard—is just as vital as what is comprehensible and visible. Moving beyond the individual existence as an isolated experience, our human and more-than-human bodies are constantly engaged in negotiating ecological relationships to defend our right to remain plural, precarious and complex. This is a call to delve into what it could mean to engage with sustainable acts of storytelling, reception, and the reclamation of spaces of coexistence—an ongoing, heterogeneous multiplicity of stories so far, in which collective imaginaries emerge from the reorganisation of the senses, rewriting and acting for justice, rather than from resonance or empathy. It is about breaking the habit of synthesis, shifting our attention from the stories that worlds tell us to the intricate micro-processes that compose these stories—memories, muscles, and multiple interwoven connections occurring at once. The UNIDEE Modules programme is a short-term residency format for selected residents. Participants will have the opportunity to cohabit at Cittadellarte and engage in an immersive, week-long residency, delving into their ongoing practice alongside peers, invited mentors, and guests. The workshop begins from the ruins of this broken language and from the need to learn it anew. It explores how listening, poetry and shared words might help us imagine an im/possible tomorrow. Module X Returning to the Body: Sensory (Un)Knowing and the Politics of Perception led by Sara Mikolai with guest Jee-Ae Lim. 23 – 27 November 2026 This module explores perception and embodiment through practices of attention, listening, movement and voice. It considers the body as a primary medium of perception, shaped by social, historical and political conditions, while introducing South Asian aesthetic philosophies such as Rasa. Participants are invited to reflect on affect, language, displacement and embodied knowledge as tools for expanding artistic and relational practices. Accommodation Participants will be accommodated within the premises of Cittadellarte, in single rooms equipped with bedding and towels, and with the use of shared bathrooms. In case of participation in the workshop as a collective, they will be accommodated in a shared room. The residential spaces offer basic cooking facilities and communal resting areas. We recognise the need for artists to recharge, share ideas, be inspired and to find a place to breathe. We run 3 week long residencies for a maximum of nine artists with this idea in mind. The residency is not project based or requiring specific engagement or outcome but it is a place to find peace and new ideas. Artists from all disciplines are welcome to apply. As we are so remote we cannot offer internet access on a daily basis, but a walk up to “internet hill” or a trip into town is possible to catch up on emails. A Residency at Cafe Tissardmine is also an opportunity to discover the richness of the Amazigh culture, their way of life, cooking and crafts. The cost of the residency covers full board, accommodation and some transportation. Duration of residency In 2026/7 we offer stays of three weeks. You must also factor in that it can take up to two days to get to us so you need to factor in travel time. Accommodation SINGLE ACCOMMODATION. We have four adobe bedrooms around a central courtyard. All have en-suite bathrooms. We have recently upgraded our other accommodation, what used to be the camp is now five detached adobe cabins built around a central garden. All have private bathrooms. Disciplines, work equipment and assistance All disciplines welcome but due to lack of reliable internet, research based projects are not practical. Occasionally we invite artists from a specific discipline but in general we prefer to have a mix of disciplines. You will need to bring everything you need to do your work with you. Shopping in our area is limited…no artist supplies, print cartridges, film or even much paper! There are better supplies in Marrakech and Fes…if you have special requirements and not sure where to get them, email me and we can advise. We do our best to assist you in realising your project. We have in the past made a pottery wheel, built a kiln and created art works with artisans in town. Since 2006, we have hosted writers, curators, researchers and visual artists from more than 30 countries. Our Writing Journey program is designed for writers who need time and a different context to work. What that means in practice varies: some writers come to disappear into a project for weeks with minimal contact with anyone. Others find that sharing a house with visual artists, photographers and researchers from different parts of the world opens something unexpected in their work. Both are fine. We do not impose a way of working — we try to understand what each writer needs and make that possible. We welcome novelists, poets, essayists, playwrights, screenwriters, literary translators, researchers and interdisciplinary practitioners. In addition, artists are responsible for their own travel, insurance, and living expenses.SÍM Residency does not have a dedicated funding body and, unfortunately, cannot offer scholarships or stipends. We therefore strongly recommend that artists seek funding opportunities in their home countries, as most Icelandic funding schemes are primarily intended for Icelandic artists or projects. All selected artists receive an official letter confirming their participation in the residency program, which may support their applications for external funding to cover the cost of their stay. Expectations towards the artist The residency offers artists to give an artist talk during their stay and a group exhibition at SÍM Residency´s exhibition space. Application information We highly recommend using the Google Chrome browser to fill out the form to avoid issues. – All applicants must complete the application form; only fully completed applications will be reviewed. Applications sent via email will not be accepted. – In the application form, we ask all applicants to present a CV with education, latest activities, and, if completed/received –  residency programs, a list of grants. – For an art project/research, we expect to receive a self-directed creative project proposal. We want all artists/researchers to feel free with proposals, as we are open to all ideas and forms. In the proposal, we would seek to understand how artists plan to use the granted residency period, their research fields, possible outcomes, and why artists, in particular, need to join our residency program. – As visual examples, we would be pleased to see three images attached to the form. Images that would represent artists’ art form, a medium that will be closely connected to the proposed project. – If you are applying as a co-artist duo or a group and working together on the same project, choose one of your leading members as the primary contact name, and in the Notes, add all other co-artists names and websites. – When completing the application, you should receive an email from the application form as confirmation. (double check your Junk, as quite often it ends there)   To consider before applying: – Artists with children:Unfortunately, we are unable to accommodate artists with children due to safety regulations and limited accessibility. Both residency apartments are located on the second floor, and access is only via staircases. As such, we are unable to meet the strict safety requirements necessary to host children. – Artists with disabilities: We deeply regret that our facilities are not accessible to individuals with disabilities. Due to the same staircase-only access, we are unable to provide accommodations that meet accessibility standards, and government permissions have not been granted to support these needs. – Individuals sensitive to dynamic environments: We encourage individuals who are highly sensitive to social engagement or navigating particularly challenging periods of their lives to consider their application carefully. The residency program hosts a vibrant community of creators from diverse artistic disciplines, cultural backgrounds, and walks of life. The shared living spaces, including kitchens and living rooms, naturally foster interactions and social activities, such as preparing meals together, sharing stories, or enjoying movies as a group. Contact Darkroom Residency Deadline: 01 Sep 2026 Country: United Kingdom *Currently taking bookings for Autumn winter 2026/2027 – Space Available from mid September onwards* The Contact Darkroom residency is a resource-based program offering artists 12 hours a day access to fully equipped colour and black-and-white darkrooms, a dedicated workshop room, and an open gallery space. The residency is designed to support both emerging and established artists, providing the facilities, time, and environment needed for immersive, hands-on making. Based in the South Hams, Devon, the residency sits within a landscape of rolling hills, rivers, and dramatic coastline, offering a rich environment for reflection and experimentation with the natural world. Artists are encouraged to draw inspiration from the surrounding area, whether working on an existing project, testing out new ideas and processes, or developing work that responds directly to place. Optional programs, such as workshops, guided walks, excursions, and local gallery visits, can be arranged on request, further connecting residents with the local community and cultural landscape. Duration of residency Contact Darkroom provides one-week to one-month self-directed photographic residencies from May through to October 2026. Artists who wish to undertake a longer residency are encouraged to apply and include a short statement outlining their reasons for an extended stay and their intended duration. Accommodation Residents are offered several accommodation options, ranging from bedsits and lodgings to dorm-style accommodation. Prices are typically kept between £35 and £40 per night. A detailed accommodation brochure is available on request.  Residents are also welcome to source their own accommodation. All residents are welcomed with a pickup from Totnes station and a shared meal, providing an opportunity to discuss intentions and plans for the week ahead. Temporal Laboratory – Situated Practices in the Environment Deadline: 01 Sep 2026 Country: Argentina Laboratorio Temporal (Temporal Laboratory) is an ongoing, transdisciplinary residency program that invites artists, researchers, writers, and scientists to suspend the rhythm of major cities and engage in a situated practice. Located in the unique, semi-rural environment of El Marquesado (where forest, dunes, cliffs, and sea converge), the residency aims to dismantle extractivist logics of fast consumption and production. Grounded in the material turn, our goal is to foster projects that treat the territory, its matter, and its biological cycles not as a passive backdrop, but as active co-producers of meaning and memory. Programming & Structure The residency rejects rigid structures. Instead of fixed dates, we offer a highly flexible format where the duration and timing of each stay are co-designed with the residents on a rolling basis to match the needs of their research and the seasonal shifts of the environment. Programming includes critical accompaniment and mentorship by the founders, field support through alliances with scientific institutions (such as Fundación Azara), and the opportunity to activate processes locally through community-engaged formats like Open Studios, shared walks, workshops, or archive activations. Conditions & Workspace Residents live and work in an outstanding 100 m² wood architectural structure, featuring a large communal hall for collective thinking, private mezzanine workspaces, a shared kitchen, and direct access to the surrounding landscape. Accommodation and studio space are covered by the program. Residents are responsible for travel and production materials; however, the residency provides official support letters to assist selected applicants in securing external funding or mobility grants. Applications are accepted year-round. Duration of residency Unlike rigid residency structures, “Laboratorio Temporal” adapts to the processes of each specific research project. In addition to the living accommodations, La Zona's headquarters features two distinct workspaces designed to stimulate both reflection and material production. Thinking and Reading Space, a warm area featuring wooden floors and sweeping views of the surrounding forest, designed for writing, theoretical research, and digital work. It houses a specialized library focused on art and contemporary practices, providing a quiet and reflective environment in direct dialogue with the natural surroundings. The Experimentation Space is a spacious, open-plan workshop conceived for material experimentation, large-scale work, and raw production processes. Instead, our expectations center on engagement, respect, and dialogue: Respect for the Environment and Matter: We expect artists to inhabit the space with an ecological consciousness, respecting the local ecosystem of El Marquesado, avoiding destructive practices, and embracing a non-extractivist relationship with the territory and its community. Active Engagement & Community Interaction: Depending on the nature and duration of the project, residents can participate in any public-facing or community activation instance. This is not a formal exhibition request, but rather an invitation to share processes through an Open Studio, a workshop, a shared thematic walk, or an archive activation.
