Funchal, between the Atlantic and the mountains – An artist-run residency for creation and exchange Deadline: 31 Dec 2026 Country: Portugal Set within a seven-bedroom house overlooking the Bay of Funchal, Escola Normal Madeira is a place to live, create and spend time with other artists — between the Atlantic Ocean, the mountains and the cultural life of the island. We welcome artists from all disciplines and at all stages of their practice: musicians, dancers, writers, photographers, filmmakers, visual artists, performers, textile practitioners and those whose work resists definition. Some arrive with a clear project in mind; others come looking for time, distance, experimentation or a change of rhythm. Life at the house unfolds through shared meals, conversations, individual work and spontaneous collaborations. Residents have access to an arts and crafts workspace, a music studio and the shared spaces and patios of the house. Madeira offers a particular context for a residency: an island with a singular natural landscape and an active cultural scene, while still offering the distance and quiet needed for focused work or retreat. There are no mandatory outcomes. Artists are welcome to create, research, experiment, collaborate or simply give their practice the time and space it needs. For those who wish to share their work, there is also the possibility of creating an event at the house — from a performance or concert to an exhibition, screening, open studio or other public presentation. The rhythm and duration of each residency are shaped together, according to the needs of the artist and the possibilities of the house. Accommodation Artists stay in a private bedroom within the Escola Normal residency house in Funchal. Residents have access to shared bathrooms, a communal kitchen, dining and living areas, laundry facilities, balconies and several outdoor patios, including a central covered patio. The seven-bedroom house overlooks the Bay of Funchal and is located around five minutes from the sea, allowing artists to live and work in the same environment throughout their stay. Disciplines, work equipment and assistance Escola Normal Funchal welcomes artists from all disciplines, including music, visual arts, photography, film, performance, writing, textile practices, design and interdisciplinary projects. Residents have access to an arts and crafts workspace and a music studio, as well as shared indoor areas and patios that can accommodate different creative practices. Artists should let the Escola Normal team know in advance if they intend to use a specific workspace or require particular equipment, so availability and practical needs can be discussed before arrival.Studio / Workspace Residents have access to shared creative spaces within the house, including an arts and crafts studio and a music studio, alongside communal indoor spaces and patios that can accommodate different forms of artistic work. The studios are shared and their use should be arranged in advance. Access to the music studio may involve an additional fee depending on the purpose and technical requirements of its use. The house can also become a space for presenting work. Residents interested in sharing their practice with an audience may propose an event during their stay, using the house and its patios for a performance, concert, exhibition, screening, open studio or another format developed together with the Escola Normal team.Fees and support The residency fee is €30 per day. Longer stays may benefit from an adjusted daily rate, depending on the duration of the residency. The fee includes private accommodation, access to the communal areas of the house and use of the shared creative workspaces, subject to availability and prior arrangement. Use of the music studio may involve an additional cost depending on the purpose and technical requirements of the session. Residents also become part of the wider Escola Normal community during their stay, connecting with an artistic network active between Funchal and Porto. Expectations towards the artist There are no mandatory outcomes or production requirements during the residency. Artists are free to use their time at Escola Normal Funchal in the way that best supports their practice, whether that means creating, researching, experimenting, resting or collaborating. Residents are invited, but not required, to activate the house with their work. This can take the form of a performance, concert, exhibition, screening, open studio, workshop, conversation or another public event developed according to the artist’s practice. More than anything, we ask artists to engage respectfully with the shared environment of the house and contribute to the spirit of curiosity, generosity and exchange that shapes the Escola Normal community. The Art Walk is always open to sculpture entries. We offer a $2,500 stipend to assist with costs and ask for a two-year loan agreement for each piece. Our rotation of sculptures provides our guests and visitors with an ever-changing Art Walk experience throughout the tourist section of our town. Yountville Arts Commission’s Mission Statement reads; “To provide vision, leadership, inspiration and support for artists and their art in Yountville, creating a bridge that links artists, community, visitors, business and government.” Our Mission Statement formalizes our goal of supporting the artist. Each piece on loan to the town for the Art Walk is for sale and promoted through our Art Walk map, social media, a new QR code accessible Audio Tour, and press releases for new works. What you get: A €500 grant awarded throughout the year to a different working-class creative anywhere in the world, funded directly from Karim Boumjimar’s income as an artist. He created this grant to share a portion of his earnings with other working-class creatives who receive little or no institutional support and could benefit from practical financial assistance. The grant comes directly from my earnings rather than from inherited wealth or a separate institutional fund. Recipients can use the funds freely for whatever they need – materials, equipment, rent, research, travel, studio costs, or living expenses. There are no strings attached and no expectation of anything in return. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, with no fixed deadline. Applications are reviewed periodically, and new recipients are selected throughout the year. 2026 Shangyuan Art Museum Huangshan & Jingdezhen Studio Deadline: 31 Dec 2026 Country: China Shangyuan Art Museum – Huangshan Studio is located in an abandoned school only 1.3 km away from the Huangshan High Speed Railway Station. The campus is 1,370 square meters, with more than 700 square meters of floor space. The studio can accommodate 10 artists and their partners or spouses at the same time. Each apartment has a bedroom, a living room and a bathroom, and a large shared kitchen. We provide housing free of charge. Residents are responsible for all personal expenses including food, daily necessities, and household items . Residents are not allowed to use others’ belongings without permission. Shangyuan – Jingdezhen Studio can accommodate 10 artists (family members allowed). Each suite features a bedroom and bathroom (with 3 beds), and there is a shared canteen. The studios are used in cooperation with the Huangyao Museum. Duration of residency Minimum one month, up-to a year (as long as your visa permits). Accommodation Residents will be provided with a private bedroom, bathroom, studio, and shared kitchen (which must be cleaned after every meal). Artist-in-Residence 2027 Deadline: 01 Jan 2027 Country: Netherlands agalab’s Artist-in-Residence (AiR) programme offers a space for research, experimentation and the development of new work. Artists have access to a wide range of printing techniques and technical expertise, a spacious workshop, non-toxic working methods, and a lively network of local and international artists, designers and makers. Our residencies are intended as a space for exchange as much as production — a place to test ideas, develop new processes and make connections across disciplines and practices. Duration of residency Minimum stay is 1 month, maximum stay is 3 months. Accommodation agalab offers six artist-in-residence places – two with accommodation and four without accommodation – that include 24/7 access to agalab’s facilities. These residencies are intended for artists with some experience in printmaking who are looking for a dedicated period of production and exchange. The artwork will sit in a new public garden on the corner of SE1. The brief is open about form and medium. That includes stone, paving, lighting, text, ceramics, seating or anything in between. We welcome applications from practitioners at every career stage, and especially from those with connections to Southwark. Up to five shortlisted artists will be paid to develop full proposals, which they will present to our Trustees and residents. Who can apply: UK-based artists are preferred. What you get: We recognise that an ambitious commission of this nature requires appropriate investment. As a charity, however, we also have a responsibility to be careful and transparent stewards of the funds entrusted to us. We anticipate an overall budget in the region of £200,000 £300,000, appropriate to the scale and ambition of the opportunity. This budget is intended to cover all costs associated with the development and delivery of the commission, including the artist’s fee and professional costs, design development, materials, fabrication, transportation, installation and any other costs necessary to realise and complete the work. The Mudhouse Residency aims to provide artists inspiration derived from an engagement with the stunning natural beauty of its environment, solitude to foster creative growth, an artistic community to enrich professional practices, and an immersive cultural experience within a profoundly rich historical context. Started in 2015, the Mudhouse offers its two-week residency sessions each summer for international contemporary artists working across a manifold of artistic disciplines, from paint, to ceramics, to experimental film. Hosting an incredibly diverse, multicultural, multi-generational cohort of artists in each residency session, the Mudhouse encourages dialogues across traditional boundaries.
