‘In Simplicitate Libertas’ 1-Week UNESCO Site Discovery Deadline: 31 Jul 2026 Country: Italy RUC residency is focused on supporting artists’ development through reconnecting with nature and with the valley’s ancient traditions: the Camonica Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979, is nestled high in the central Alps of Italy. It is renowned for its breath-taking glacial lakes and mountains, Roman archaeological sites, and most especially its prehistoric engravings carved in the rocks. RUC maintains a partnership with the Valle Camonica Center of Prehistoric Studies (Centro Camuno di Studi Preistorici) for academic programs and studies on archaeology and history. In 2016, nearby Iseo lake was chosen by Christo for the installation of the ‘Floating Piers’ in its astonishing beautiful and dramatic landscape. ‘In Simplicitate Libertas’ is RUC’s 1 week residency retreat at Villa Amati during which a small group of international artists will experience the ancestral magic of rural life in a small community. During the stay, in addition to focused studio and en-plein air working time, artists will have the opportunity to take part in workshops and cultural trips to discover the main historical-artistic treasures of the area. Duration of residency The Residency sessions last one week, and artists may stay for a second week by prior arrangement. TartAMI Residence – Open Call 2026 (July, August, October–December) Deadline: 31 Aug 2026 Country: Japan TartAMI Residence is an artist-in-residence program run by TartAMI (Fujise Co., Ltd.), rooted in Japanese tatami culture and contemporary artistic practice. Located in Izumi City, Osaka — close to Kansai International Airport (KIX) — the residence offers a quiet, lived-in environment where artists can work closely with traditional materials while engaging with local craftsmanship and everyday life. Artists are encouraged to experiment freely with tatami as both material and concept, and to explore cross-cultural dialogue through their practice, research, and daily interactions. DESERT 23°S: Arts & Ecology Research Residency. Creative practice in dialogue with land, ecologies & planetary change. Deadline: 31 Aug 2026 Country: Chile This residency and research programme in the Atacama Desert, Chile invites artists and researchers to develop their work within a landscape shaped by climate, geological time and living cultural knowledge. Through field visits, collaborative activities, shared sessions and time for individual practice, the programme creates an immersive context for inquiry. It offers space to learn with the territory, build relationships and think critically within complex and fragile desert ecologies. This environment offers perspectives on both local dynamics and broader planetary processes, opening questions about how creative practice can reconfigure our relations with the natural world. Our objectives are to support the development of artistic work and research that engage with specific territories while reflecting on wider planetary questions. To cultivate a shared space for living, exchange and collective reflection between artists, researchers and local contexts. To encourage site-responsive, environmentally attentive practices that honour and respect local knowledge, ecologies and cultural patrimony. LOCATION The residency takes place near San Pedro de Atacama, within the wider territory of the Atacama Desert in northern Chile, close to the ecosystems of the Reserva Nacional Los Flamencos. This high-altitude desert landscape is shaped by extreme aridity, volcanic activity, salt flats, Andean wetlands, desert valleys and mountain foothills, forming one of the most ecologically, geologically and culturally significant regions in South America. Life here has long been sustained through fragile agricultural oases fed by Andean snowmelt, where human, mineral, water and non-human systems remain closely entangled. The territory is also of ancestral importance to Lickanantay communities, whose presence, agricultural knowledge, water management and relationships with the land continue to shape the region today. The surrounding area brings together deep geological time, living desert ecologies, post-extractive landscapes and contemporary forms of habitation. Situated between the Salar, the volcanoes and highland wetlands, the residency is embedded within a landscape inhabited by microbial mats, flamingos, wild camelids, endemic plant species and layered cultural histories, offering an engaging context for artistic research and ecological inquiry. RESIDENCY STRUCTURE The residency offers a focused period for artistic research, experimentation and dialogue rooted in the Atacama Desert. The programme is process-based rather than outcome-driven, supporting participants to develop work in relation to territory, ecological conditions and shared inquiry. The rhythm of the residency balances our curated programme and your self directed practice. Participants are invited to work at their own pace, responding to the landscape, materials, questions and relationships that emerge through direct contact with the place. The programme concludes with a light public or shared moment, shaped together with the group, according to context. The residents are supported during their stay by the La Wayaka Current team in collaboration with locally based collaborators. We do not accept funding from extractive industries. All support for the residency comes from aligned cultural partners and participant contributions. We work with a sliding-scale model to keep the programme as accessible as possible. Partial and full support is offered each season depending on availability. This transitional region — shaped by complex ecologies, cultural histories, and ongoing global pressures — holds both immense biodiversity and a layered human presence. Amidst these vibrant landscapes, our residency offers space for reflective creative practice connected to the surrounding ecologies and contemporary challenges of the region. As participants spend time immersed in these living environments, they are invited to reflect on broader questions of coexistence, interdependence, and how global environmental shifts are entangled with local realities. Rather than proposing solutions, the residency offers time and space to listen, observe, and respond through artistic practice — situated within the living complexity of the territory. Residency Program Our site-responsive residencies offer a carefully balanced structure combining guided experiences and self-directed time. Location Nestled between the Caribbean coastline and the tropical rainforest of the Chocó region, Tropic 08°N offers artists a place-based residency within one of the world’s most biodiverse and ecologically complex regions. Accessible only by air or sea, the area is sustained by subsistence farming, fishing, and small-scale tourism, with communities long connected to these coastal and rainforest ecosystems. La Wayaka Current has been working within this territory for nearly a decade, forming long-term relationships that allow us to host artists in respectful proximity to both rainforest and ocean environments, in connection with nearby villages and our long-term team of local collaborators. This program provides space for reflective artistic practice grounded in time spent within the region’s distinct ecologies, landscapes, and living contexts.
