In the thicket is an open call for conceptual and narrative photography, which understands the impenetrable as a space for narratives – as a backdrop, as a scene, as an inner landscape. We are looking for works that do not depict documentary, but track down what is findable in the thicket – or only conceivable. Works that tell stories without explaining them. No nature idyll. A location. What is there to see in the thicket when someone is looking closely? Up to 3 individual images or a series of maximum 7 images can be submitted. All photographic techniques and approaches are welcome – from documentary to staged, from analog to digital. AI-supported processing is allowed but must be marked at submission. Nevertheless, it is not a requirement to have an active project to work on. There are no academic requirements but each one’s own writing and the desire to devote this time to focus on writing, to grow and expand the practice nurturing within a community of pairs. No final product would be expected but the engagement in writing daily and sharing/discussing with the rest of the group. Artist from all nationalities are welcome to apply, the coordinator speaks fluent English, Spanish and Portuguese, though in the spirit of sharing with others in the workshop, spoken and written English as a common language to be able to share and communicate between each other though not a requirement, would be a plus for taking advantage of the workshop and the group experience. SESSION & WORKSHOP GENERALS The goal for this session is to understand where as writers are we individually coming from & try to further work by offering ideas, craft tools and advice to be able to develop a practice and process that would fit each individual. There would be no imposing approach, subject, form, theme to writing on others, nor any aesthetic or ideological superiority of any forms of poetry or prose or approaches, any schools of art or methods of thinking about art. Together we will try to unravel and understand our process of writing, what we want to communicate, to tell and find the ways that better suit each one’s voice to express. The workshop will be non-hierarchical creative space in which everyone feels challenged & inspired, & everyone feels heard. As a group, we will work on perceiving or relating to others’ experiences, and we will encourage & welcome any public or private discourse regarding anything each one might do. There would be no right or wrong, good or bad writing. This would be a space to understand the relationships between works of art & the audiences & how those relationships can be useful or exciting, thinking about what writing is for each one & how it works, rather than an exclusionary model. We would work on the craft of writing, both the metaphysical work & the mechanical work, that can’t be separated. There would be no pressure on delivering a final product nor scheduled or specific featured writing, but we do expect daily writing under each one style and time, in order to be able to work on and share on each meeting as a group. SESSION & WORKSHOP DETAILS The primary goal for the workshop is that we all end our time together understanding more about writing and our own writing than beforehand, with more fruitful & productive questions to ask of writing & with new craft tools to add to our toolbox. Pottery Farm Residency Deadline: 16 Aug 2026 Country: France Pottery Farm Gallery is a rural creative retreat offering short-term residencies for artists from all disciplines. Located in the heart of the Gascony countryside in southwest France, the residency provides a quiet, nurturing, and distraction-free environment where artists can slow down, focus deeply and reconnect with their creative process. Surrounded by open fields, big skies, and expansive views of the Pyrenees mountains, Pottery Farm Gallery is a place for reflection, experimentation, and sustained creative work. The rhythm of life here is intentionally simple, allowing residents to step away from daily pressures and immerse themselves fully in their projects. The residency is designed for artists who value time, space, and solitude as essential parts of their practice. There are no mandatory outcomes, public presentations, or production requirements. Instead, the emphasis is on process, presence, and personal creative development. Artists are encouraged to work at their own pace, whether that involves long hours in the studio, walking in nature, reading, writing, sketching, researching, or resting. The environment supports both intense focus and gentle exploration. Duration of residency The residencies run from May to October over a period of two weeks. There is the possibility of extending this period to be negotiated when signing the contract. Please keep in mind that they fill up quickly and we have a selection process in place for each artist. Residencies take place between May and October and run for two weeks.In some cases, an extension may be possible and can be discussed at the time of contract signing. Places are limited and applications are selected carefully to ensure a good fit between residents and the ethos of the residency. We recommend applying early, as sessions fill quickly. Accommodation The house is a typical Gascony stone farmhouse set on a hill with spectacular 360º views overlooking the full range of the Pyrenees on a clear day. Anaïs’ Room Generously proportioned, this room places the bedroom on the first level and the workspace on the mezzanine, allowing you to easily separate rest from inspiration. Its large windows flood the room with natural light, offering stunning views of snow-capped mountains on a good day. Living Room (1st floor) The spacious second living room, with cheddar wooden ceilings, is perfect for book lovers. It features a library surrounding the space and four large windows with stunning views, allowing you to enjoy some peaceful time in a light filled open space. Laura’s Room This space is designed for living and creating in absolute comfort. With a mezzanine layout, you can sleep on the first level and work comfortably on the second. It features a spacious wardrobe for your clothes and materials, as well as a beautiful view of the surrounding fields and natural landscape. Bathroom (1st floor) There are two bathrooms. The bright sunlit bathroom on the first floor has a shower, toilet and double sink. There is plenty of shelf space for your toiletries and pegs for hanging towels. The views over the mountains is stunning. Kitchen The accommodation is provided on a self-catering basis and residents are given cupboard, fridge and freezer space, plus shared use of a fully fitted kitchen. There is a range gas cooker with two electric ovens, a large fridge, microwave and dishwasher. The cupboards are full of everything you need for cooking and dining. Residents can shop and cook for themselves or share their favourite dishes around the community kitchen table. The village of Mauvezin is 3 km away and has a large supermarket and weekly farmer’s markets. Residents can either be taken shopping or can borrow a communal car for short journeys.  Benjie’s Room This corner room has two windows giving light all through the day. It has views of both the Pyrénées and the fields. A small desk provides a peaceful workspace perfect for any artist, especially ideal for writers. There is a large fitted wardrobe and extra drawers under the bed. Living room (ground floor) The living room is cozy, featuring three large windows overlooking the Pyrenees and the countryside, with various areas where you can work, relax, and find inspiration. There is a TV with a collection of vintage DVDs for relaxing evenings. Camille’s Room While it doesn’t have a mezzanine, it offers generous space with a bed, a large desk for tranquil work, a wardrobe, and a chest of drawers. This bright room overlooks the fields, the Pyrénées, and a charming view of the vast beautiful countryside. Bathroom (ground floor) With the option of a separate shower and bathtub, plus a double sink. The washing machine is available and plenty of space outside behind the house for drying in a natural setting. Millie’s Room Similar in layout to Camille’s room, this single-level room is spacious and includes a wardrobe, bed, and a long wooden desk to work on your creations. There is an enclosed log fire that heats the whole house during the colder months. NON TOXIC PRINTMAKING IN PATAGONIA – Summer Residencies Deadline: 17 Aug 2026 Country: Argentina Our artist-in residence programs are designed to provide a creative and supportive environment for printmakers from all over the world who seek to immerse themselves in an atmosphere surrounded by forest and mountains that vary their colors during the four seasons of the year. We distinguish ourselves by motivating and accompanying both those who are just starting out and those who are more experienced with a contemporary approach aimed at aesthetic and technological experimentation we specialize ourselves in sustainable less toxic techniques. We are located in Villa Los Coihues, a neighborhood that maintains mountain town traditions that allow you to move around calmly and lead a simple and uncomplicated life. You will be able to connect with landscapes and sensations that will expand the perception of your senses. You will find trails that will take you around the lake, centuries-old Coihues forests, a waterfall, and viewpoints on San Martín Hill. The studio is 40 minutes by bus from the city of Bariloche, characterized by its traditional chocolate and craft beer and its varied cuisine. Duration of residency From two weeks or a month. For longer stays we should discuss the work plan beforehand. Accommodation Accomodation for one ot two people available. 24-hour access to the printmaking studio located on the ground floor of the dormitory. 2027 Residency Application Deadline: 19 Aug 2026 Country: United States Vashon Artist Residency supports artists by offering time, space and resources to reflect, create and connect. Located on Vashon Island, in the heart of the Salish Sea, Vashon Artist Residency offers a peaceful waterfront retreat with comfortable, thoughtfully designed living and working spaces for visual, literary, performing, media and interdisciplinary artists. Founded by visual artist Cathy Sarkowsky in 2021, this intimate residency was created from her desire to support artists in developing new work by offering a space that nurtures exploration—of practices, relationships and the opportunity to recharge physically, spiritually, and creatively. Each year, we host more than 70 artists in small cohorts throughout the year, with 2 and 4 week sessions. To support accessibility, artists are invited to pay on a self-determined sliding scale, based on their individual financial circumstances. Artists of all backgrounds, identities and disciplines, including those of diverse races, gender identities, sexual orientations and geographic origins, are welcome at Vashon Artist Residency. Duration of residency 2 and 4 week sessions Accommodation Vashon Artist Residency welcomes up to seven artists for each residency session. Accommodations include a private bedroom, a private or shared bathroom, a communal kitchen for meals and indoor and outdoor areas for dining and relaxing. We intentionally host only 1 to 3 artists at a time, creating a calm and uncluttered environment where each resident can fully engage with their work without distraction. Unlike more communal programs, we do not organize shared dinners or group activities. Solitude is a key element of our philosophy. Each artist lives and works independently, while still having access to shared creative spaces if and when they choose. Each resident is accommodated in a private, fully equipped 120 m² duplex apartment, offering both comfort and autonomy throughout their stay. Artists also enjoy free and unlimited access to our two studios, which are the only shared spaces on site and can be used flexibly according to individual working rhythms. We are located in a small village in the South-West of France, in the Périgord Noir region, an area renowned for its extraordinary historical richness. Often referred to as one of the “cradles of humanity,” this region has been continuously inhabited since prehistoric times and is filled with caves, medieval villages, and remarkable heritage sites. The residency takes place in a restored 11th-century water mill, surrounded by nature, offering a peaceful and inspiring setting. At the same time, the village center with shops and everyday amenities is just a 10-minute walk away, allowing for both retreat and convenience. We provide bicycles to help residents move around locally. Here you are in the heart of Italy, between Umbria, Tuscany, Lake Bolsena and the Tyrrhenian Sea. Inhabited, according to tradition, by the ancient Etruscan populations called the ‘Tusci’. Their refined civilisation is testified by precious archaeological finds and extensive necropolises. Sorano and Pitigliano are close by: two villages in the south of Tuscany, in the heart of the ‘Tuscan Maremma’, beautifully carved into the local tuff stone. A ten-foot sculptural mobile phone will be raised and burned in a professionally managed performance combining art, protest, spoken word, music and film. We are focusing on London, Sussex and southern England. The project is fully funded, and our team will manage production, permissions, insurance, risk assessments and fire safety. There is no fee to apply or participate. Who can apply: UK-based venues, arts organisations, producers, councils, landowners and cultural partners with access to a suitable outdoor site. La Maison Ocre

Autumn artists retreat at le maison ocre Deadline: 20 Aug 2026 Country: France A specifically designed artists house, part of la maison Ocre which is made available to creators at a subsidised rate.The house can accomodate a family, partners or a small group. The facilities include basic recording equipment, easels and other tools for the artist. Bicycles are also avilable to visit the wonderful local countryside. Duration of residency Artistes may choose a one or two week period. Accommodation The artists have use of the entire house and a nearby garden. The independent building comprises two large studio areas, on the first floor are two bedrooms with private bathrooms that can accommodate up to four people. At Maison Ocre, just a few meters away, we can supplement your occasional or pre-arranged needs with two additional bedrooms, a large room, and meals; we can also help out in case you forget something… Disciplines, work equipment and assistance Authors, Painters, sculpters, photographers and film makers and theater, in which the house can provide most basic material requirements on request.Studio / Workspace There is a bright 40m2 studio on the ground floor with two entrances, a toilet, and a sink, along with a kitchenette. Upstairs, a 30m² mezzanine can serve as a small conference room, computer room, or lounge. Both areas are equipped to accommodate painters, musicians, sculptors, writers…Fees and support The price of the rental is 350€ per week. Expectations towards the artist There are no expectations towards the artist. We have an exhibition/concert hall available that can accomodate up to 50 people , if the artist wishes to present his work to his personel circle after his stay.
