Applicants must submit a photograph representing their perspective on contemporary theatre and a motivation letter addressing their current artistic concerns, a remarkable production they have experienced, and how they watch a performance. Selection considers artistic approaches, geographic diversity, and connections between an applicant’s practice and the program’s theme. Contemporary Performance’s Strategy Coach Notes examine how to develop these materials into a coherent application. The notes address the relationship between artistic practice and spectatorship, the selection criteria, and the structure of the required portfolio materials. About the Theatertreffen 2027 Fellowship The International Forum has been part of Theatertreffen for more than 60 years. Theatertreffen presents ten productions selected by a seven-member critics’ jury from German-language theatre. Alongside the festival, the International Forum brings together approximately 30 emerging theatre professionals from different countries and artistic disciplines. Participants attend performances, discuss artistic approaches, participate in workshops, and develop professional relationships through shared activities. The program provides an opportunity to encounter contemporary German-language theatre while exchanging perspectives with international practitioners. Its emphasis on creative processes allows participants to examine their working methods and artistic assumptions through conversations, practical exercises, and encounters with unfamiliar approaches to performance. The 2027 edition is directed by Aljoscha Begrich and Sima Djabar Zadegan. Its theme, The Art of Observation, considers the act of watching as an essential component of theatrical practice. Participants will investigate how directors, performers, dramaturgs, designers, and other practitioners observe theatrical events through different professional and cultural perspectives. Activities include intensive artistic workshops, discussions of festival productions, artist talks, and exchanges with Theatertreffen’s leadership and jury. The program also incorporates collective meals, informal conversations, excursions, and shared daily activities. Much of the 2027 program will take place at Uferstudios, including activities outdoors on the site. What Is Offered The fellowship covers the costs of participating in the International Forum. Support includes: - Festival access: Tickets to productions selected for Theatertreffen and other festival events. - Professional workshops: Intensive workshops with artists working across the performing arts. - Artistic exchange: Artist talks and conversations with Theatertreffen’s leadership and jury. - Travel: Travel expenses for participants living outside Berlin, based on the cheapest travel option and the applicable country of application. - Accommodation: Shared apartments for participants living outside Berlin, with separate bedrooms and shared kitchens, living areas, and bathrooms. - Meals: Meals or daily allowance for participants living outside Berlin. - Local transportation: Public transportation within Berlin, excluding Berlin-based fellows. - Insurance and visa fees: Travel and health insurance and visa fees supported by the Goethe-Institut.
